JANUARY 2009

A mere 5 years ago (unless you’re 15, in which case “a third of a lifetime ago”) and yes, shockingly The Saturdays were around. That seems so wrong…. However, a new year means, err a leather-clad, whip-cracking Spanish melodrama from 1968 was still dominating my charts, leaving only one current record to hit the top: Kevin Rudolf, yes that household name shot in at 3 and up to 1, amazing for essentially a one-hit wonder. L’il Wayne, though, has had a longer career. Regardless, it’s a great record!

Oasis at 2, still having big hits for me, Katy Perry at 2 with Hot n Cold, both denied a number one unfairly by my love affair with DD,D,B,M&T as they were sometimes called even more confusingly. Sugababes prove they actually had far more big hits in my chart than I remember, at 6, Girls Aloud at 7, with new act Lady Gaga (5 years!?) and Lily Allen making for a heavily female-pop chart joining them in the Top 10. Britney at 20 with one I used to holiday jig along to in the video club - I won’t say dance, as it’s more a sort of swaying shuffle from one foot to another, bottle of beer in each hand (2 for 1 midnight till 1am) and I mostly had the floor to myself till the younger clubbers arrived at 10 to 1 to get the cheap drink offer and mime along to Single Ladies dance movements a perfect copy of Beyonce. And that’s just the boys. I digress. Womaniser sounded great. The thing about 2 bottles of beer is, the more drink, the better your own dancing seems to get as you go along. Amazing.

(PS I’m a lightweight at alcohol, prob why I seem to attract the shall we say, extroverts, like the tubby-ish kid of 20 or so who kept dancing daintily round a pole and shoving his face right up to mine time and again while spinning round me. I wasn’t quite sure whether he fancied me, wanted me to move, or was pissed. As there were plenty of other poles available, he hadn’t been there long enough (with his mates) to get drunk, I choose to continue to think it was the former, we all need ego-stroking occasionally, deluded or not) (PPS I went back to the hotel secure in the knowledge that I was devastatingly attractive) (PPPS That might have been the beers, on reflection)

Anyways, elsewhere, non-girlie stuff includes Jason Mraz (an ongoing big-seller these days) at 4, White Lies, Tinchy Stryder & Taio Cruz (lost in transit these days), and Fleet Foxes - surely THAT’S not 5 years old! Honestly these all seem like, what, 2 years old at the most!!

FEBRUARY 2009 CHARTS

1968 Whip-crackin' classic Legend Of Xanadu continues to pop up and down from the top of the charts, allowing debut newcomer Lady Gaga to grab 2 weeks at the top in between. Just Dance is the first of guess how many toppers for Gaga smile.gif She hit the pop scene with a breath of fresh air and a great album. I'm Yours, chart staple these days, makes my Top 10 along with the fab Girls Aloud single, Fleet Foxes, Coldplay, and...yes Lady Gaga again, already, with her Ra-Ra-Rasputin rhythmed Poker Face.

U2 meanwhile swap oldie for newie in the 10, Miley Cyrus makes my Top 10 4 years before managing it in the UK (hey it was a good single!), Annie Lennox makes a 10 comeback, and new entries include Santogold (Santigold these days), Muse covering Nina Simone (also a chart staple these days), Pet Shop Boys going straight into the Top 5, as does Saint Etienne with yet another chart-flop (SO unfair charts sometimes), while Elbow slip in with a future classic and future big hit, Sam Gold ditto, and Taylor Swift debuts with Love Story. If I were her I'd move into pop and away from Country....

MARCH 2009 CHARTS

It was a Pet Shop Boys revival going on, awards and downloads, and a Pet Shop Boys on-form return with Love etc, to give a Very Pet Shop Boys chart, Actually. Yes. Quite deserved, being as they are the best act of the last 30 years - this is not open for discussion, let's just call it fact, eh? By the end of the month they have 5 new tracks joining classic oldies in my chart. Gawd bless'em British institutions.

So anyway, Gaga was new and peaking, her Poker Face grabbing the top in between Pet Shop Boys, So. U2 were also getting their boots on, Miley Cyrus was in my Top 5 with a good little single flying on the wall, Take That were Up All Night at the relative undeserved flop of the single in the UK charts, but not in mine. Empire Of The Sun at 3 with the fabulous Walking On A Dream, and Tony Christie getting a bona fide NEW actual single in my top 10. What!? Not Amarillo?! Jai Ho, also joins it, sounding all fab and Indian-rhythmed, a great pop single to end the Pussycat Dolls popchart career on.

APRIL 2009 CHARTS

Pet Shop Boys old and new dominate. Go West gets a second run on top, last time 1993, and the album track that should have been a single heads the chart for the other 3 weeks. So many PSB tracks, in fact, that they keep themselves at 2 - a track that at least had a go as a single, All Over The World, following the BRITS performance of it, plus the classics. Second Best British Band Of All Time (after The Beatles)... yahoo.gif

Gaga and Empire Of The Sun the other acts of the day for me, and surprisingly Enrique at 2 with a dance track. Lily Allen's fab Not Fair hits 3, the also fab Noisettes at 6, sadly they've gone into obscurity after a great run of singles, album and live performances on tour. How fickle is success and the singles buyer...! La Roux goes top 10, (previous Noisettes comments also apply), Bat For Lashes ditto, Girls Aloud join the Top 10 party, and sneaking in the bottom of the chart with 2 tracks, Miley Cyrus: one's an obscure country laugh, the other a future UK number one cover, thank you X Factor....

Good day, John.
2009 was the last year, when I followed UK Singles Chart.

These singles were # 1s in my chart :
Katy Perry - Hot And Cold [Adore "One Of The Boys" era, think the titled track also could be good as single]
Sugababes - No Can Do [Girls are back on the top after awful "Girls" smile.gif ]
Britney Spears - Womanizer
Girls Aloud - Promise
Girls Aloud - Loving Kind
ABBA - The Winner Takes It All [No single year without ABBA songs smile.gif ]
Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree [Like Kim & Mel version too]
Saturdays - Just Can't Get Enough [Most possible it's my "Song Of the Year" in 2009. Iconic videoclip.] wub.gif
Taylor Swift - Love Story
Girls Aloud - Untouchable

Like :
Saturdays - Up
Ting Tings - We Walk
Lily Allen - Fear [First and last Lily Allen's song in my chart]
Britney Spears - Circus [Maybe also # 1, but not sure in it laugh.gif ]
Little Boots - New In Town [Not best single choice, but "Hands" in my all-time top 20 albums, maybe even in top 15]

APRIL 2009 CHARTS
Miley Cyrus: one's an obscure country laugh, the other a future UK number one cover, thank you X Factor....

Joe's X-Factor cover was very high in my weekly charts. smile.gif

Thanks Alex,

I like Joe as a singer, he does have a pure voice. Now I see your list I still find it hard to believe it's 5 years ago, seems so recent! laugh.gif

cheers

May 2009 Charts

The Pet Shop Boys invasion of my charts continues apace, with More Than A Dream grabbing a 4th week on top, after being interrupted by Ike & Tina’s 60’s classic River Deep Mountain High, the huge USA flop (and huge UK hit) that sent Phil Spector into a sulk for years. It IS genius, though. Another PSB track King Of Rome pops into the top 10, while Did You See Me Coming gets a proper single release and yet another PSB number one for 2 weeks, knocking themselves off the top for the 4th time in 2009. Just to sum up the stats to May, only Lady Gaga, of new acts, interrupted a run of 3 oldies and 3 newies from Neil & Chris on top. Bit of a fan, me....

All this PSB action keeps off Lily Allen from getting a number one, peaking at 2 with the fab Not Fair. It’s not fair, no! Girls Aloud were Untouchable at 4, and Empire Of The Sun get a second Top 5 in 2 months with We Are The People at 4. Meanwhile Eurovision was fab, making itself heard with Alexander Rybak getting to be one of the few Eurovision winners to top my chart. The third one, in fact, after Abba and Teach-In. Other Euro entries from Ukraine, Iceland, France, Finland err I’ll just total them: 13 including UK’s Jade peaking at a lowly 56!

JUNE 2009

While I was busy doing amateur fanzines and photogroups, whaddya know a hero went ahead and died suddenly. Yes, Michael Jackson, and on balance he’d have been better off just having a quiet life and avoiding debt. In the rush of re-entries of his back catalogue there were lots of opportunities for me to push some faves, so Billie-Jean gets back at 1 for the third time, and Earth Song gets another go in the top 10, while Man In The Mirror, the track that became the main one to focus on in 2009, made my top 20 having already been a chart-topper in 1988. I always was mystified why it was such a minor hit in the UK.

Other oldies, Glen Campbell’s classic Gentle On My Mind finally gets a chart run and a chart-topper, while Pet Shop Boys 2nd single off the new album also hits Number One, Did You See Me Coming? I did! It’s all a Fairytale though, as Eurovision gets it’s first chart-topper in 15 years (Love City Groove the last one), but Alexander Rybak is the first winner to top my chart since Teach-In in 1975.

Pet Shop Boys get an album track to 5 (Legacy), as does La Roux who is Bulletproof, shortly before I saw both of them Live in concert. Other Eurovision success stories? Patricia Kaas, Svetlana Loboda, Randjad, as I go Euro-mad. Pixie Lott gets a Top 10, joined by The Noisettes, shortly before I also saw them live.

JULY 2009

THis month I was on holiday in Sitges and Barcelona (Spain)...plus ca change, been there this week too. Anyhow, apart from the holiday pubbing and beaches, I deliberately aimed to be there for a Pet Shop Boys concert live at a gorgeous outdoor historic courtyard venue Poble Espanya in Barcelona, one hot sunny summer’s day. I was there because I didn’t get tickets to their 02 gig thanks to an unannounced top secret arrival from Michael Jackson at the 02 meaning the box office was shut (I’d taken the day off work to get the tickets!). Plan B was Barcelona, the tickets were half the price of 02, there is no ticket touting or secondary ticket selling w*n**r rip-offs, you pay by credit card and you take your credit card and passport to the venue to get in. Heaven! I loathe the internet touts with venom ripping off the real fans, buying in bulk and selling-on at inflated prices. If Spain can stop this, if Pet Shop Boys and Kate Bush can do it, so can all artists and tour venues.

I digress, the concert took place on the day of Michael Jackson’s funeral (who, you may recall, was the reason I was there - bizarre!) and it remains my all-time fave concert, not just for Pet Shop Boys (and they are always fabulous) but for any act, even classic memorable ones from the likes of Beach Boys, U2, Madonna, and certainly better than poor ol’ Jacko himself at Wembley. There’s a list of the set-list in order, but I was virtually the lone mousy-haired Brit near the front in a sea of gorgeous black-haired younger Spanish girls and boys (and some older ones), PSB’s seemed to attract a much younger crowd in Spain for the standing-only concert. Or possibly UK ticket prices are so high you need to be old and rich these days to go. The boys did marvels with boxes and lights and a few dancers, an arty ever-changing stage presentation, and a beautiful mix of the new stuff and the classic stuff, high quality songs. One of the marvels of pop is how a studio-based act turned out to be one of the great live draws, and with current material. Absolutely Fabulous, as they once said.

Back in chart-land July, and Jackson oldies dominate the charts UK and mine, but my preference is for his 70’s stuff, because that’s the Michael Jackson I most missed. We were the same age, and literally grew up “together” from age 12 onwards, I was a fan at 12, so it’s only right that the heart-breaking Ain’t No Sunshine and I’ll Be There should get to 1 and 2 first, followed my entry to his 80’s period Can You Feel It returning to the top ahead of One Day In Your Life and She’s Out Of Life. In fact, no room for many of them in my chart, many a classic booted out - but those that had already had good chart runs.

Keeping up the oldies theme, Dusty’s childhood classic fave I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, gets to the top. Loved it at 5, love it still. All these oldies, of course, punishes the new stuff, and Records that would otherwise have topped my chart fall short: so mega condolences to La Roux’s Bulletproof the main victim who would have had 3 weeks on top. Other biggies, The Saturdays Work, Paolo Nutini’s Candy, Freemason’s Sophie Ellis-Bextor fabbie Heartbreak, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s clubtastic When Love Takes Over, and Florence & The Machine’s Rabbit Heart. Among others!

QUOTE(popchartfreak @ Jun 2 2014, 10:02 PM) *
Meanwhile Eurovision was fab, making itself heard with Alexander Rybak getting to be one of the few Eurovision winners to top my chart. The third one, in fact, after Abba and Teach-In.

Nothing from British / Irish winners. Even not "Making Your Mind Up" cry.gif

John, retro songs are the main thing, because I love your charts.
"I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", The Carnival Is Over", Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma" were # 1s in a time of release. "If You Seek Amy" was my "Song Of The Year". It's my second favourite Spears' single after "Lucky".

Here is my favourite ESC songs from 2009:
1. Susanne Georgi - La Teva Decisio (Get A Life) (Andorra)
2. Sinead Mulvey and Black Daisy - Et Cetera (Ireland)
3. Elena Gheorghe - The Balkan Girls (Romania)
4. Malena Ernman - La Voix (Sweden)
5. Kejsi Tola - Carry Me In Your Dreams (Albania)

Eurovision winners, which were # 1 in my chart (From 1970 to 2014):
1. Dana - All Kinds Of Everything (Ireland 1970)
2. ABBA - Waterloo (Sweden 1974)
3. Brotherhood Of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me (United Kingdom 1976)
4. Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up (United Kingdom 1981)
5. Nicole - A Little Peace (Germany 1982)
6. Katrina and the Waves - Love Shine A Light (United Kingdom 1997)
7. Lena - Satellite (Germany 2010)

In vintage era : "Een beetje", "Tom Pillibi", "Poupee de cire, poupee de son", maybe also "Boom Bang-a-Bang"

AUGUST 2009

The big record 5 years ago was Sophie Ellis-Bextor and the Freemasons fab dance (minor) hit Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer). It deserved to be bigger. They’d both topped my chart before, but for some reason this under-performed. 4 weeks at one this month here, though. Bad news for runners-up Florence And The Machine and the deliciously OTT Rabbit Heart at 2, Agnes at 2 for 2 weeks with the marvellous Release Me, I still cry when I singalong to it. The lyrics spoke to me at the time. Also at 2, Frankmusic and Confusion Girl, a UK 27 hit. Yes, I’d forgotten it too, already! It’s catchy enough though.

Coldplay had a Strawberry Swing at 9, and Kanye West helps Mr Hudson into the Top 10 like a Supernova. Meanwhile Evacuating the Dancefloor, Casacada hit 6 cos it sounded good in da clubs to me. Athlete came back with a good single at 5, Superhuman Touch, while clubbing in the Canaries also brings back Black Eyed Peas tracks. Bananarama get a good comeback non-hit with Love Comes at 10, for 28 years of hits since Aimwana. Bung in some more Pet Shop Boys tracks and remixes of oldies (The Passions) and that’s about that for my dancetastic chart.

SEPTEMBER 2009

In which Agnes gets on top after a few weeks of runner-upping. What a fantastic record it is, a brilliant heart-break song, earnest and passionate and melodic. If I’ve had a couple of pints I’ll be there belting it out on a dancefloor believing every word I sing. Shame she had to be knocked off after 1 week, but, hey, it’s The Beatles. It’s the astounding, influential otherworldly Tomorrow Never Knows, John Lennon’s hypnotic, druggy anthem that wasn’t even a single, but influences right through to the Chemical Brothers/Noel Gallagher’s Setting Sun are clear. Then She’s Leaving Home, a Sgt Pepper poetically sad song about children leaving, Macca at his bitter-sweetest. Finally Magical Mystery Tour, EP, TV mini-movie, and B Side, and fantastic rock track, urgent, pounding and inventive. By Beatles standards, the TV show was considered a flop, by sales standards the very expensive EP, with Booklet and 2 singles was only kept off the top of the singles charts by....The Beatles Hello Goodbye. The Beatles could do in a year what most bands dream of doing in a career. I’m a bit of a fan....

So who lost out to the Fab invasion? Agnes would have had 3 weeks on top, and Paloma Faith’s epic New York would have had one week on top this month. What a fantastic record that is, less known than the rival New York State Of Mind, but just as good. Others: Cascada get to 3 on the dancefloor, Noisettes have a Wild Young Heart throbbing at 5, while Little Boots has a Remedy for that at 6.

Pixie Lott keeps the girl pop stars a-coming in my top 10, as Boys And Girls also hit 6, as Madonna Celebrates at 8, 25 years of non-stop Top 10’s virtually, give or take the odd Hanky Panky. Robbie Williams Bodies slumps up to 4, Mika’s Golden at 7, and The Beatles get a 4th Top 10 with George Harrison’s I Need You: 3 great songwriters in one band. Shakira shows a bit of the She Wolf at 9, 7 years on from topping my chart. Whatever...

October 2009

Paloma Faith grabs her first chart-topper with the wondrous epic ballad New York, somehow being strong enough to hold off a Beatles invasion, as their albums all chart again in the UK, giving me an excuse to cherry-pick one track from each that had never made my charts before. The Beatles album tracks, no exaggeration, could have been taken as singles (they weren’t) and each album mined for 1 or 2 years (as is the standard practice in 2014). Their 7-year 2-albums and 3-singles per year output could have easily been spread out over 20 years for other acts. Number One here? I Need You, a George Harrison track from Help!

Robbie also bangs back with another chart-topper, Bodies, his 11th solo number 1, plus 2 with Take That. The last spot of the month is taken by Broooce, and his classic 1975 Phil-Spector wall-of-sound epic Born To Run. First-time round it fell short of my top 10, criminally, so it was a justified number one 34 years on. Still, at least it made my charts, more than it did in the UK - the original version has still never made the UK top 75, though it came close to the then-50 chart in 1975, so probably would have had there been a 75 list then.

Other newer noteworthy tracks: Madonna’s back at 3 with Celebration, Cerys Matthews is solo fro Catatonia and hits 2 up Arlington Way, Mika has a couple of hits with We Are Golden and the mystifyingly minor hit Rain - not to be confused with also-charting Beatles B-side classic. Real Late Starter is at 6 for the equally mystifyingly fab minor singer-songwriter Nerina Pallot, and Shakira’s a She Wolf at 9. Chuck in Little Boots, Pixie Lott, the brilliant Empire State Of Mind, and it’s otherwise a fairly quiet, oldies-dominated month.

November 2009

In which yet more Beatles album tracks turnover on top, starting with the eastern-flavoured gentle John Lennon Norwegian Wood, as good as any of their singles. Fab! The experimental Rain, B-side to 1966 Paperback Writer, should have been a double A Side, cos it’s awesome, grabbing a week on top before being kicked off by Rain, Mika’s only number one, and the only occasion when 2 identically-titled songs hit the top consecutively. Hah! Mika’s followed by Pixie Lott, and her only chart-topper, the sweet Cry Me Out. Both have had UK number one’s as well, but not with these lesser-known/obscure tracks. I like to be different sometimes! Finally, it’s Twist And Shout, The Beatles stunning version of Twist And Shout, where John shouts himself hoarse. Huge in the States, this one was also huge in the UK - but not in the singles charts. It was an EP and they didn’t qualify in those days, but it was HUGE, trust me, I was there (age 5 or 6). It charted once available on download. Hooray!!!

Other biggies: Colbe Caillot’s Falling For You, Example’s watching The Sun Come Up at 3, Cheryl’s Fight For This Love at 7, Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ at 9, Susan Boyle’s Rolling Stones cover Wild Horses at 4, Lady Gaga at 8 (Bad Romance), Pet Shop Boys at 2 with a remixed All Over The World, Norah Jones, Westlife, Chase & Status, and a bunch of oldies.
