How obsessive chart fan are you?
Why do you follow them, for instance favourite acts, chart facts, or just follow the charts in general. Just to get the general consensus of members that follow the charts, for me its basically just following the chart these days, not following any major act, unless a couple of big acts are releasing in the same week, which makes the chart more exciting, I'm just fairly obsessive, but I'm leaning towards I don't care about them these days as they have became fairly slow and getting quite a bit of a chore to listen to the chart show on a Sunday afternoon/early evening. |

Somewhere between fairly obsessive and don't really care. Leaning towards the latter recently, they've become too dull and predictable, I used to like the surprises of the chart but everything's clear to see weeks in advance now.

Highly obsessive and chart in general (also for favourite acts as well- Idina was the only reason I listened when the chart was in quite a big state in February)

I said Highly Obsessive and Follow the Charts in general.
Id say alot of younger Bjers will say they follow certain acts whereas the older hands will be general followers. As ive said before I started loving the charts when i became interested in classic xmas music. I used to listen to the 1985 NOW Christmas album cassette that my parents had and began to wonder how successful these song were when they first came out - were they just like the songs we hear on the radio today, how did they become perennial songs played every year? How did they become part of popular culture? I absolutely loved Stuart MacConies 'The Peoples Songs' which was successful last year. Thats what led me to chart runs and sales mainly on the old Cool Clarity/UK Top 40 Charts forums around 2002/03 then to Chart Clarity and then here as everyone migrated over. Im a general follower of the chart now and love seeing records grow and become massive hits and how they are released much to everyones annoyance in here

Fairly obsessive. I was highly obsessive about 10-20 years ago, but I don't have that many time anymore
 I follow chart facts and charts in general and not certain artists

I am highly obsessive about the charts - but not just in the UK but worldwide especially UK, USA, all the European charts & Australia.
This is because I like to see how my favourite acts are doing in other countries and all the other good stuff out there apart from UK & USA. I think the UK charts are better now as they are slower moving unlike what they were like 10 or 15 years ago when a track charted at it's peak one week and 2 weeks later it had gone, and another couple of weeks the single deleted. I think including downloads was the best thing that happened to the UK charts. I also hate cut-down charts like the BBC has just the Top 40. I like them complete such as the full UK Top 100 which is official. As well as UK & USA, even Ireland has a full Top 100 now as does Germany, Holland, and Australia. France even has the Top 200. I am also obsessive about archive charts from as far back as possible in different countries. I even have charts from UK & USA as far back as 1940. It's nowhere near the extent I was when I first listened, but given that was eight years ago, it's no surprise. I do always still follow and listen religiously at the weekend, but I do find chart surprises and inspired new entries are a bit too few these days. |

I do still find the charts interesting, maybe not so much at the moment, as lots of songs that I love these days don't do particularly well and it's very slow at the moment (to be expected of course as we're in the summer lull) but I'd still say highly obsessive judging from the amount I post in this forum.

I've been obsessively following the UK charts since I discovered them age 10 in 1968 (and the US charts to an extent since 1972), and have been passionate about them throughout, and the changing music scene. I adore music, and I've never had problems moving with the musical times.
The reason I've been so vocal about the UK charts lately is I hate what they've become. For the first time in it's history, the UK singles chart has become tedious. I mean, I'm old, I'm supposed to prefer sedate mass-appeal pop records hanging around for months, years, but it's SO boring. Where's the excitement. How is a 10-year-old today going to get fired up with 2 new records a week and the same tracks hanging around for months? The charts when I was a kid were chock-full of competing pop stars, all well-known, and in many different genres, old and new, and the turn-over was pretty fast and exciting. We seem to be in age of one-off world-wide smashes dominating all, pop stars struggling and new popstars are rare, pop is written by committees of writers-for-hire (not necessarily a bad thing in moderation, but it's taken to extremes) and manufactured acts seem to dominate. The charts aren't helping break new acts at all, traditionally they started with small hits, built up to medium hits and then became big as the fans increased. These days it's Either Number One or you're a flop. In the UK. The rest of the world really doesn't worry about chart positions, and I think we are now down that road unless the music industry get off there fat dull arses and try to rescue it before it's too late. We need an exciting new music movement to pull the rug from under those controlling everything, we need a new Punk rock equivalent, long overdue.... |

I got into the charts in 1988 (yes I'm OLD) and through to around 2004 I listened every weekend religiously. Since then I've had a so-so relationship with them, sometimes I've loved them (2007-2010 being a particularly fine period) but recently, though I still like to know where tracks are, I almost never listen to the chart on a Sunday. FLOP CHART MOD.
