It's interesting to see such a western dominated singles chart but with a far more African albums chart! Is the airplay chart a good measure of the popularity of songs?

Thanks a lot for this post! I tend to forget about checking the South African chart, although I did find some gems this year!

It's interesting to see such a western dominated singles chart but with a far more African albums chart! Is the airplay chart a good measure of the popularity of songs? The majority of the radio stations in SA are English only, so the Afrikaans singles don't tend to do well on the airplay chart. However, Afrikaans albums are always mega sellers as the genre as a whole has a huge fanbase. I'd say this chart is definitely a good measure, because illegal downloads far outweight iTunes sales to a very large extent in turn why sales wouldn't represent a singles chart well. Whereas physical album sales are still going very strong here. |

I know English is an official language in the country, but I also believe it's not the most commonly spoken one! The government should put in rules to protect other languages on the radio, like France demands radio play at least 40% Francophone music. Who are the most successful Afrikaans artists then? I'm willing to try some out |

I'm willing to try some out Afrikaans people are a minority in SA. There are radio stations for every language though, the most popular and mainstream ones however are English only. The province in which I live's main radio station, however, plays both English and Afrikaans. Urban stations tend to play English, Xhosa, Sesotho, Zulu. I guess each station just caters to its main listeners' preferences. The Afrikaans artists currently in the album chart are the most successful I'd say. Juanita du Plessis is the most successful Afrikaans artist of the last decade as far as I know. I remember her holding off Gaga's Born This Way from #1 during her album's opening week. But I find Afrikaans music in general very awful. It's very AC and country, if those genres are your cup of tea, then you might be a fan. Riana Nel, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Karlien van Jaarsveld are of the more tolerable Afrikaans artists/bands, I'm a casual fan of them. Seen all of them live |

A new chart has started being broadcasted which is based on ITunes sales only. This is probably the closest thing to a singles sales chart we have in South Africa. Unfortunately it follows a Big Top 40 format with positions 11 to 40 determined by sales over the past week while the top 10 is based on live sales data and locked in only at the final hour of the chart show. The website for the chart is kiatop40sa.co.za. The website shows the live top 40 ITunes chart and not the chart that was broadcasted. I have the positions for this week's broadcasted chart below:
40 George Ezra - Blame It On Me 39 Calvin Harris - Summer 38 Pharrell - Happy 37 Fences featuring Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - Arrows 36 Katy Perry - This Is How We Do 35 Katy Perry featuring Juicy J - Dark Horse 34 Tove Lo featuring Hippie Sabotage - Stay High (Habits Remix) 33 Beatenberg - Rafael 32 Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj - Bang Bang 31 Ed Sheeran - Don't 30 James Blunt - Bones 29 John Legend - All Of Me 28 Nico and Vinz - Am I Wrong 27 OneRepublic - Love Runs Out 26 Jason Derulo featuring Snoop Dogg - Wiggle 25 Goldfish - Moonwalk Away (Moonlanding Mix) 24 Coldplay - Sky Full Of Stars 23 Ariana Grande featuring Zedd - Break Free 22 Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora - Black Widow 21 The Script - Superheroes 20 Becky G - Shower 19 Chris Brown featuring Usher and Rick Ross - New Flame 18 Pitbull featuring John Ryan - Fireball 17 Sia - Chandelier 16 The Vamps featuring Demi Lovato - Somebody To You 15 Charli XCX - Boom Clap 14 MAGIC! - Rude 13 Maroon 5 - Maps 12 Nicki Minaj - Anaconda 11 Sam Smith - I'm Not The Only One 10 Sam Smith - Stay With Me 9 Ella Henderson - Ghost 8 David Guetta featuring Sam Martin - Lovers On The Sun 7 Lilywood and the Prick and Robin Schulz - Prayer In C 6 Calvin Harris featuring John Newman - Blame 5 ZHU - Faded 4 Taylor Swift - Shake It Off 3 GRL - Ugly Heart 2 Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass 1 George Ezra - Budapest |
