R__A__T__E Welcome to the 'FOUR' rate! Most of y'all have probably heard the album many times over now (and more recently the deluxe tracks - including the ghastly 'Act My Age'), but don't worry those of you that haven't heard the album yet and are being patient saints - this rate will be open until 30 November, so as to allow it all to sink in and for you to decide that '18' is your favourite album track and 'Stockholm Syndrome', while good, is going to become the overrated 'They Don't Know About Us' of the album. The rules are simple - rate each song from the album on a scale from 01 to 10. One 11 is permitted, and one -1 is permitted, although both are optional. So without further ado, let's get rating! |

09.0 Steal My Girl
Safe, but understandable choice to lead the album with. A really good pop song, with a catchy chorus that has appeal outside of their fanbase. 08.5 Ready To Run With this track you can see the influence of 60s/70s and even some of the tracks towards the end of Midnight Memories. Really catchy chorus again for me, but for me I don't think it really goes anywhere, or more that I think it should go somewhere different. Cant imagine this song live. 09.0 Where Do Broken Hearts Go On my first initial listen I really did not like this. Everyone had said it was a standout, but I really didn't get it. Now after a lot of listens I really get it, and the track really goes somewhere unlike 'Ready To Run'. This track was produced to be sung in stadiums, and I think it will sound really, really good when the crowd get singing along. 09.0 18 The Ed Sheeran/Passenger writing is obvious from the lyrics and production. I really like this, it's a nice little track. But it sounds a little out of place, because I don't think they had any influence on this track at all. Plus it's a bit odd singing you've loved someone since you were 18 when you're only 20/21. 08.5 Girl Almighty Really catchy, and really funky. I love how they all all take it in turns to sing bits of the song even though the lyrics are really the same all the way through.. mostly. It flows really well, and the actual main part of the song is quite soulful. I imagine this will would be quite a fun track live, maybe the C'mon C'mon of this era. 06.5 Fool's Gold By far and away my least favourite track on the album. I'm never a massive fan of their ballads that are not singles, but I just really don't get this track. Maybe I don't appreciate it, I've no idea, but it's a track I'll tend to skip. I've not got the album notes, but it sounds like it could have been Tedder produced? Lots of big drums, but the track just doesn't work for me at all. 10.0 Night Changes Loved this track since I first heard it. Easily the strongest ballad on the album. It's really just a nice calm ballad with a slight rock undertone. Harry's vocals on the chorus were the right choice, and most of all, I think the message of the track is really nice. Certainly gets you thinking. Again, really can't wait to hear this performed live as I think it will be special! 11.0 No Control This song is surely about Morning Sex??? Or at least that has some influence must have had some barring on the track. Anyway regardless this is insanely catchy, with a huge chorus. I think this is a better version of Little Black Dress. I certainly think this is the second 'rockiest' and edgiest track on the album. Can definitely tell some of the influences of Good Charlotte/The 1975 on this track. 09.0 Fireproof Still really like this, despite hearing it years ago it seems now! I think on the whole this is a nice representation of the album in general. The vocals are more spread up, they all have their own moments to shine, and the the soft rock/soul elements are there to be heard on the track. 07.5 Spaces Not massively keen on this, though I think it is a lot better than Fool's Gold. The chorus is very catchy (definitely sure Ryan Tedder produced this). Much like Taylor Swift I think a lot of people read too much in to the messages behind the tracks. Seen a lot of people think this is about the growing spaces in the band, and wondering who will end up splitting the band up. While I think that could be true, not sure Management would have allowed this track if there was a hidden meaning behind the track. 09.0 Stockholm Syndrome Really funky 70s vibe going on with this track. The chorus is the obvious highlight of the track, with the synths in the background. Now this is a track I think was influenced by the euphoria around the band, obviously slightly masked up with the held of songwriters to make it less explicit! 10.0 Clouds With the band slowing morphing in to The Rolling Stones image wise, you can really see their influence, plus the likes of The 1975/Kodaline/Good Charlotte on this track. This track was produced to be sung in a stadium with the heavy drumbeat and the 80s keyboard synths in the verses. Easily the rockiest song on the album, and I think it works really well. Massive highlight on the album, and when you compare this to some of the tracks on their first two albums you can really see how their sound has changed massively. 09.0 Change Your Ticket My second favourite of the extra tracks. Like I've already mentioned, if this was not produced by The 1975 then they need to sue! The guitar riffs are exactly the same as Chocolate!!! I love the verses, but I think the track misses a trick with the chorus. Just not sure Liam's vocals are really right for a mid-tempo edgy indie pop track. Even though Zayn's vocals are more soulful, it really suits the track. 07.0 Illusion I'm still trying to get my head around this track. I think it's average, and can definitely see why it was on the deluexe version and not the full album. I can only assume that there is some real personal value to the track, hence it's inclusion. Luckily I think the chorus saves the track. 08.0 Once in a Lifetime This is really haunting, and I think in time this track will grow on me to become a favourite on the album. While it's a ballad, it doesn't sound like a One Direction ballad. It's kind of hard to explain but it really reminds me of Radiohead. Like I say the track is really haunting, I put that down to the guitar more than anything. 10.0 Act My Age What can I say.. I absolutely love this. This is proper One Direction. It has elements of their old style, mixed with their new style. I expect it will massively divide everyone with the folky Irish influence mixed with the pop breakdown, but I think it works really well. It's a fun track and the verses are the best thing on the album. It's constantly in my head, and is one track that they need to perform live because I think it will be epic. OVERALL VERDICT / RATING 8.8 Definitely their most cohesive album to date. I think like Midnight Memories they're still in two minds of what sound they really want to go with, as there are several, but I think album gives the clearest indication to date. There are 1/2 obvious future single candidates (Where Do Broken Hearts Go being the most likely). I think this album will probably be their least commercially successful album, but that's proper more down to the market more than anything. I do think this album will go somewhere to riding some of the stigma people attach to their music without actually listening to it. |

The style of the album suits them perfectly and as body of work it just works so well. I declare 'Change Your Ticket' to be the 'Stole My Heart'/'They Don't Know About Us'/'Little Black Dress' of the album. It's going to be a shame that any more post-album single releases next year will suffer from the half-arsed approach like 'Midnight Memories' and 'You & I' got in favour of the tour. But I really would like to see 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go' and 'Ready To Run' given the single treatment, they'd be great additions to the inevitable greatest hits. |

09.0 Ready To Run 10.0 Where Do Broken Hearts Go 08.0 18 07.0 Girl Almighty 05.0 Fool's Gold 09.0 Night Changes 08.0 No Control 09.0 Fireproof 05.0 Spaces 11.0 Stockholm Syndrome 08.0 Clouds 08.0 Change Your Ticket 07.0 Illusion 06.0 Once in a Lifetime 06.0 Act My Age Mark: 7.875 In conclusion: A solid album overall. It doesn't top 'Midnight Memories' for me but 'FOUR' is still pretty great in its own right. 'Fool's Gold' and 'Spaces' aren't awful, but they're the lulls in the album for me. Perhaps they'll grow with time. 'Stockholm Syndrome' is my 'Little Black Dress' of this album, i.e. the gem. Although I assume 'SS' is going to be more popular with fans than 'LBD' is. |

I could easily listen to both albums straight through without skipping, but depending on my mood I could easily skip the 7's. 'Spaces' = lull 'Stockholm Syndrome' = gem |

I do not get the HUGE 'Stockholm Syndrome' loving from some of you (mainly Jay lol). It's one of the few songs that i struggle to sing along to and it's just sort of there. A little meh in an album full of consistently good moments.
