One Direction's Chart Highlights
  • One Direction's fourth album "Four" debuts at #1 on sales on 387,000, making them just the 3rd act to debut at #1 with their first 4 albums (Britney Spears, DMX 5 albums), and the first group to do so.
  • One Direction have racked up four #1 albums in just 2 years, 8 months and 1 week. Their first album, "Up All Night" debuted at #1 in March 2012 on sales of 176,175. Their second album, "Take Me Home" debuted on top in November 2012 with 539,665, while their third album "Midnight Memories" debuted at #1 on 546,230 in December 2013.
  • "Four" registers the 3rd biggest sales week this year behind Taylor Swift (1,286,544 & 401,599 for "1989") and the largest for a group this year, only just ahead of Coldplay (382,665 for "Ghost Stories"). In fact, One Direction's sales are the biggest for a group in the last 12 months, since "Midnight Memories" debuted.
  • They are the 4th act to reach #1 with their first four albums (Britney Spears, DMX 5 albums, The Monkees), and the 6th act to reach #1 with their first 4 studio albums (Beyonce 5 albums, Britney Spears, DMX 5 albums, The Monkees, The Kingston Trio 5 albums).
  • This week's total album sales were 5.49 million - up +2% on last week and up +4% compared with same week last year. Approximately one in 14 of all albums sold last week was "Four". YTD stands at 215.01 million - down -12% on same point last year.

I was going to ask the same - hadn't they predicted 400K? What were the first week sales for their 2nd and 3rd albums?

Big decline for them but it's still a great first week and they're not as frontloaded as most artists are in the US. Should clear a million fairly comfortably.

It doesn't feel like there's been a big hit to promote this album.

"Steal My Girl" sounds like 5 drunk lads singing after a night out laugh.gif

In fairness they've only actually had two big hits in 'What Makes You Beautiful' and 'Story of my Life'. It's not too surprising 'Steal My Girl' hasn't smashed but it's at least done better than 'Live While We're Young'.

"Live While We're Young" is no different to "What Makes You Beautiful".

And while "Best Song Ever" isn't that great (the various cover versions sound so MUCH better), it's a better song than "Steal My Girl", IMO laugh.gif .

Nice to see her back in multi-platinum (very deserved). Quite interested to see how her next album will do, wonder will the new fanbase stay?

It's cool to see Kelly Clarkson doing really well again. Wonder will she get Platinum this year? Probably not unless she gets amazing promo, but I think she should get somewhat close. 900k by year end? Could be Plat in ... 2016 in that case?

Yeah, I hope she manages it. I read she has a televised concert thing which should hopefully give it a good boost. I'd love her to do a bit of promo over here this time. Some great songs on that album.
