Slightly missed our target of 4 posts per day yesterday oop (my fault for getting distracted by stuff, we will do 5 today to make up for it magic.gif)

Like 'Break Free' earlier, this is another track that missed out on a few weeks of charting that it would have had if the OCC had changed their rules a little bit earlier. Unlike 'Break Free', it's a good song 'A Sky Full Of Stars' actually did manage to reach the top 10 eventually - its chart run seemed to start off very similarly to 'Magic' minus the first couple of weeks but with the release of the digital EP and a timely price reduction on iTunes it snuck in a week of #9, actually a place higher than 'Magic' ever got. Coldplay have thus maintained a streak of having at least two top 10 singles from every album to date. I was a little skeptical of this song as many were on finding out that it was produced by Avicii but thankfully the song sounds more like Coldplay with a bit of Avicii influence than Avicii feat. Chris Martin (which would of course just be credited to Avicii lololol), not a drop of the faux folk/country sound and overall not really even a dance song. It was the song obviously designated 'big hit' of the album but still a very good song and I was more than pleased to see it live up to that.

Going back to a previous discussion, "skeptical" is not an alternative spelling, it is a purely American spelling. The British English spelling is "sceptical".

My preference remains -ise but I accept their verdict that -ise and -ize are both acceptable in British English. Someone has to be the arbiter and I will accept the OED's credentials. After all, they employed Susie Dent.

14 ~ Ed Sheeran - Sing
(1-2-3-3-4-7-8-10-14-15-19-23-24-26-27-26-29-33-36-30-26-22-25-34-36-44-44-39-37-27-...)
2356pts ~ 30wks

If you're an Ed Sheeran fan, you're in luck with this section magic.gif If you're Jack/Ethan, you might want to look away. Ed's first EVER #1 makes it to #14 here. Ed's dominated 2014 of course and this track was what began it all (ignoring how One was released before due to instant grat, but let's ignore that), having only left the top 40 for two weeks since it entered in June. Sing was produced by Pharrell, who appears in the music video for the song too. It's a great track IMO but the next one is better...

13 ~ Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud
(26-25-29-23-28-20-18-16-13-17-18-24-19-18-17-10-4-2-1-2-2-4-4-1-2-3-3-...)
2378pts ~ 27wks

Ed's second EVER #1 only just beats his first, having spent 29 consecutive weeks in the top 40 (27 to the end of 2014) and it's still in the top 3. It first entered the top 40 as an album track and proceeded to hang around for forever when Heart picked it up. It climbed to the top 10 when radio picked it up, and then to #1 when he performed it on The X Factor. And since then it's just been omnipresent. Good thing it's my personal favourite Ed track heart.gif

14 ~ Katy Perry - PRISM
(...-36-40-27-25-26-31-37-27-24-7-29-39-42-28-25-31-28-28-27-19-12-11-22-37-34-39-59-44-34-35-39-24-31-38-51-48-73-91-66-92-x)
2584pts ~ 40wks

Tracks in singles list:
15 Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)
51 Roar
115 Birthday
140 This Is How We Do
275 Unconditionally

Katy Perry's third (proper) album proved to be another success for her although not QUITE on the same scale as previous album Teenage Dream, which is a million seller. Considering she had a lower hit rate this album in the singles chart, it's done very respectably really. Its week at #7 in the chart run looks...odd, to say the least laugh.gif I presume that was Google Play's doing anyway. This album was followed by Katy's world tour, Prismatic. Which was quite possibly the best night of my life heart.gif

13 ~ Ed Sheeran - x
(1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-3-3-5-6-3-2-2-3-2-1-3-2-2-2-1-1-1-...)
2673pts ~ 27wks

Tracks in singles list:
13 Thinking Out Loud
14 Sing
18 Don't
29 I See Fire
104 One
168 Photograph
263 I'm A Mess
327 Bloodstream
332 Nina
339 Afire Love
342 Tenerife Sea
423 Runaway
504 The Man
657 Take It Back

Ed Sheeran. Oh Ed Sheeran. What a chart MONSTER he has been this year. In a good way of course. I'm a huge fan of Ed and I think x is a really good album. Most of it charted in the top 100 at some point funnily enough. Obviously its chart run has been INSANE but sadly, it was released a bit too late in the year to contend for the top 10 properly, even with such an amazing chart run - only outside the top 5 for one week, and even then it was at #6 ohmy.gif Ed doing it for us gingers, g'won *.*

12 ~ Ella Henderson - Ghost
(1-1-2-2-3-4-3-4-6-5-10-12-12-18-17-17-21-22-16-18-21-29-37-45-49-43-37-33-30-...)
2411pts ~ 29wks

Such a shame for Ella, she had so much POtential () but she just could never achieve enough commercial success and alas she is due to be dropped any time around now.

In all seriousness though, this was the debut single from Ella who shocked the world when she undeservedly went out in just sixth place in the X Factor 2012 despite being seemingly one of only two acts anyone cared for that series, along with James Arthur (who was in the bottom 2 with her the week she left which gave his voters the kick up the arse needed to get him to eventually win). James went on to have a very successful winner's single but in terms of original material from their respective debut eras Ella has him conclusively beat, with this song that will soon have sold 800k+ (over a million if you include streams) and is also in the process of getting big Stateside. It was a great song from a popular act, always destined for huge success. The follow-up singles haven't QUITE done as well but she's yet to see a proper flop and her album has also done fairly well, reaching #1 and sustaining a decent chart run if with a large second week drop.

11 ~ OneRepublic - Counting Stars
(...-10-13-14-17-24-23-26-34-36-32-30-22-19-30-42-44-45-50-51-58-49-50-53-57-59-70-61-50-43-42-54-51-51-62-63-63-66-74-86-85-92-96-80-59-79-87-93-x(2)-68-83-70-...)
2434pts ~ 50wks

The final song to fall short of the top 10 is OneRepublic's first EVER UK #1 () 'Counting Stars'. The majority of its lengthy top 10 run was of course in 2013, and indeed its chart run has been split in such an awkward way for them that this marks two straight years in the 11-20 section of the countdown after finishing 17th in 2013. Whoops. Ah well, it's a million seller so I'm sure they won't mind too much. Despite being in the chart for such a ridiculously long time I still find this song more enjoyable than any of its follow-ups from the 'Native' album.

12 ~ The Vamps - Meet The Vamps
(2-3-9-13-18-17-9-23-36-28-27-32-18-14-11-14-13-14-19-27-21-30-31-31-36-32-27-23-31-32-30-37-43-15-48-48-41-...)
2834pts ~ 37wks

Tracks in singles list:
97 Somebody To You (feat. Demi Lovato)
133 Wild Heart
134 Last Night
147 Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) (feat. Shawn Mendes)
200 Can We Dance

Boyband The Vamps showed incredibly impressive longevity with their debut album with the very unimaginative title 'Meet The Vamps'. They couldn't get to #1 courtesy of the silly decision to release the album head to head with the long-awaited comeback from Paolo Nutini - picking good release weeks is not a strength of whoever's in charge of those decisions for The Vamps - but the album has apparently managed to appeal significantly beyond the fanbase, being held up by the top 10 successes of two post-album singles and having a small boost at the end of the year from the release of a 'Christmas Edition'.

11 ~ Imagine Dragons - Night Visions
(...-21-20-17-24-19-24-26-15-18-9-17-25-34-27-13-20-23-35-47-53-50-59-66-74-68-57-49-31-20-34-42-33-18-21-18-27-55-53-30-52-72-69-76-56-71-x(5)-97-97-...)
2865pts ~ 47wks

Tracks in singles list:
65 Demons
89 Radioactive
474 On Top Of The World

Just missing the top 10 albums are Imagine Dragons with their debut 'Night Visions' originally released quite early in 2013. The continuing ever-presence of 'Radioactive', the success of new single 'Demons' and probably a bunch of other factors that don't immediately spring to mind ensured the Dragons were top 100 for more or less the entire year once again. The follow-up is due in 2015 and they'll presumably be aiming for a #1 this time ('Night Visions' peaked at number 2, unable to get past Justin Timberlake's 3rd week with 'The 20/20 Experience').

10 ~ Pitbull - Timber [feat. Ke$ha]
(1-2-2-5-6-5-8-8-13-12-16-18-23-23-25-26-29-33-36-44-41-36-41-44-44-50-47-45-49-55-65-65-73-82-84-82-80-86-99-x(4)-97-x)
2440pts ~ 40wks

IT'S GOING DOWN, I'M YELLING TIMBURRRRRRRRRRR! Mr Worldwide returned in late 2013, or for us UK'ers, early 2014 (smile.gif) with new single Timber, from the re-release of his album Global Warming. The track was tipped as a huge hit by many and it's easy to see why, it's catchy, fun and accessible. Sadly, though, there wasn't a a DALÉ in sight. On the brightside, it gave Queen$ha another #1 and a brief return to relevance following a slightly floppy (and INCREDIBLY underappreciated) second era. Poor Ke$ha, or Kesha as she now is. Will she ever get another hit? cry.gif

10 ~ Pharrell - G I R L
(1-3-3-4-7-8-8-9-12-15-12-10-6-14-17-20-23-29-15-33-32-40-43-42-14-45-33-29-47-75-72-60-12-19-26-37-47-70-77-91-92-73-49-...)
2969pts ~ 43wks

Tracks in singles list:
TBA Happy
143 Marilyn Monroe
490 Gust Of Wind
606 Come Get It Bae

Pharrell's new album G I R L was highly anticipated following the mega success of its first single Happy (initially for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack), and unsurprisingly it shot in at #1. Its chart run after tha was very impressive and has remained in the top 100 ever since its released, although perhaps it benefits a little here from being released before Ed Sheeran and George Ezra so therefore had more time to get points. It did well for an album that only really had one hit anyway, as follow-up Marilyn Monroe didn't make that big an impact and the two follow-ups made even less of an impact. WD Pharrell though, he seems like a nice guy.

9 ~ George Ezra - Budapest
(RE-68-x(20)-4-5-3-5-5-4-6-5-6-7-13-17-19-11-12-10-15-18-17-16-19-22-29-37-29-23-28-21-...)
2455pts ~ 29wks

Dibby-do-ing his way to single figures for the year is George Ezra with his breakthrough hit 'Budapest'. The song racked up three weeks in the top 100 as a cherrypick from his 'Did You Hear The Rain?' EP before being deleted from iTunes and put back up as as pre-order. On its re-release it shot in at number four and got even higher two weeks later, reaching its peak of #3. Even later than that it became the top song in the chart by a British act for one week securing him a #1 on the Homegrown Top 40 (plug). George has been one of the success stories of the year and rightfully so - next step for him to break the US? I could see it happening to some extent with this track.

9 ~ Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour
(1-1-3-3-2-5-4-4-3-4-3-2-4-5-1-1-3-3-2-3-3-6-3-5-4-3-4-4-2-2-2-...)
3036pts ~ 31wks

Tracks in singles list:
TBA Money On My Mind
TBA Stay With Me
30 I'm Not The Only One
135 Like I Can
242 La La La (Naughty Boy feat. Sam Smith)
368 Lay Me Down

Exposing the flaws of this system (which are more apparent on the album chart than the singles chart), the three clear biggest albums of 2014 are all gone by #9 with only one of them making the top 10. The one that does - simply because it was released the earliest - is sadly by the worst of the 3 acts, Sam Smith. He started off with so much PROMISE for me with two great features for Disclosure and Naughty Boy then a very strong (in my unpopular opinion) single of his own in 'Money On My Mind' but alas he succumbed to the Emeli bug of releasing endless utter tedium which was predictably lapped up by the public. Credit where credit is due, this album was the only one to pass a million sales both here and in the US in 2014, it's been continuously top six since release (returning to #1 for a fifth week just today) and he has not one but two songs left to reveal on the other countdown. Plus he has six Grammy nominations.

8 ~ Sam Smith - Money On My Mind
(1-2-5-10-10-12-14-16-18-22-25-29-36-30-26-29-38-39-45-37-39-40-46-55-56-59-64-60-57-55-61-68-78-84-84-78-75-71-61-70-87-87-81-67-59-...)
2459pts ~ 45wks

The first of two Sam Smith songs in the top 10, Money On My Mind went to #1 in February during the week of the BRIT Awards, and hasn't left the top 100 since, probably helped by Sam's omnipresence in the world right now and continued singles success with his other tracks. Despite a relatively fast decline of 1-2-5-10, it proved to have very good longevity after that. Most importantly, we learnt that when Sam goes home, he tends to close the door. What a legend. Anyway, the track seemed to be a real marmite track, with the falsetto in the chorus being the deciding factor for people. I personally really like the track although I'm Not the Only One is my favourite by him.

35 Pompeii
113 Of The Night
543 Flaws
634 Oblivion
681 Things We Lost In The Fire

AYD IF YEW CLEWS YER AYEZZZZ. King of annoying accents Dan Smith and his band Bastille has another good year for their debut album Bad Blood, which returned to #1 following their BRIT Award wins (on the same week that Money On My Mind went to #1, nice to see some cohesion in the points chart ). Pompeii had another good year too thanks to streaming being added into the chart. Their side project album/EP/whatever has done less well, only at #510 in the points chart, having peaked at #45 last year. Their second album will be met with much hype however, whenever that happens. Probably this year. Joy.

7 ~ Vance Joy - Riptide
(RE-85-35-18-10-14-13-12-15-27-30-34-39-43-52-57-49-70-67-72-74-59-62-87-97-92-88-66-61-37-49-61-53-41-38-37-40-45-47-51-50-49-52-57-55-53-51-65-78-73-x(1)-87-78-...)
2476pts ~ 51wks

There's one obvious song this year that's finished higher than it ever peaked on the weekly charts, but there is in fact another one, Vance Joy's 'Riptide' which only spent a week in the top 10 and even then at just #10 but finishes seventh here. Some predicted this song to be the new 'Somebody That I Used To Know' - it is after all an Australian-origin radio friendly and slightly-MOR-but-not-in-a-bad-way indie pop track - and it never quite lived up to that but nonetheless it shot up the chart quickly in the new year and proceeded to stick around in the top 100 for the entire year save one week in December. It is of course another track that benefited heavily from streaming, with its last four top 40 weeks all being gained from streaming (although in last week's chart it was top 40 on sales but not overall oddly enough).

7 ~ Paolo Nutini - Caustic Love
(1-1-1-3-4-6-3-4-7-7-5-7-9-6-7-10-8-8-8-11-8-8-12-15-15-17-14-11-20-27-34-38-35-36-38-28-18-...)
3247pts ~ 37wks

Tracks in singles list:
166 Scream (Funk My Life Up)
222 Iron Sky
272 Better Man
328 Let Me Down Easy

I have always loved Paolo Nutini's music, but the nature of that love has a tendency to flip-flop. Sometimes his songs are just so inexplicable that they're slightly adorable (e.g. 'Candy' and 'Pencil Full Of Lead') and other times he's just legitimately good, without a trace of irony (e.g. 'Last Request'). This album is no exception, the lead single 'Scream (Funk My Life Up)' is somehow a mixture of the two - it may just be the title but it still feels like quite a silly song, while simultaneously actually being really good - while 'Iron Sky' is very much the latter, a beautifully crafted masterpiece of a track which is easily the best thing he's ever done, I was quite distraught that it never managed to make the top 40. Seriously, if you haven't heard it, even if you don't like Paolo, have a listen. Paolo remained a big name in 2014 anyway despite his quite lengthy absence, and this album gave him a second #1 and the fourth biggest seller of the year, it won't come close to the sales of the first two albums but it's hardly done badly, even returning to the top 10 last week.

2757pts ~ 32wks

Sam Smith AGAIN now, making his last appearance in the points chart this year. Stay With Me gave him a second solo #1, and a third overall, and has not left the top 40, or top 30 rather, in 34 weeks (32 of which in 2014). I can't blame people for being extremely bored of the track, its longevity is astounding but it's the kinda song that's surely been lapped up by Heart and the MOR stations so it's basically unavoidable, even now. I still find it a really pleasant track anyway, a lovely listen and as someone who doesn't listen to the radio, I'm not actually bored of it yet. The version with Mary J. Blige on guest vocals is even better though.

Perhaps surprisingly high here is The 1975's debut album. It went to #1 in 2013 and spend the majority of 2014 in the chart too. Denise Welch's son fronts the band, who decided to release about 500 singles from the album which would explain why it sold so well. Especially as Radio 1 supported each and every one. Anyway, I find them rather good for what they are, and I've listened to half the album out of my own choice (not gotten around to the second half yet). They can either be pretty good or dreadfully boring, like with recent track Medicine.

Singles

5 ~ Mr Probz - Waves
(1-2-1-2-2-4-4-5-9-7-8-11-12-11-17-16-18-22-23-20-16-24-26-32-37-40-37-37-37-40-39-43-50-53-49-39-...)
2842pts ~ 36wks

Sneaking into the top 5 (and it's very much the winner of the losers as the top 4 are MILES ahead of everything else) is 'Waves', the biggest hit of the recent deep house invasion. Well, the original song isn't deep house at all, but of course the version people bought (and for some time the only version available) was the remix by Robin Schulz. Mr Probz provided a rare example of a Dutch artist in the chart who is not a producer, he's actually supposedly a rapper although there's no hint of rap on either version of this track. I always thought this was a bit of a weird one to be THE big hit of the deep house hits as I still think it sounds less commercial than some others but it's a very nice and summery track so I'm not complaining. It was one of a surprisingly high four tracks which had two separate runs at #1 in 2014.

5 ~ John Legend - Love In The Future
(RE-83-36-29-15-13-6-7-5-5-3-4-2-7-7-8-9-12-16-18-21-17-33-23-26-42-36-18-24-31-41-35-41-42-43-55-52-55-74-89-6-20-32-31-35-40-36-23-...)
3441pts ~ 47wks

Tracks in singles list:
TBA All Of Me
593 Ordinary People

And holding up the rear in the albums top 5, again some way behind the top 4, is John Legend's 2013 album 'Love In The Future'. On the album's original release it debuted at #28 and swiftly vanished, with no hint of any further longevity or hit singles. However, 'All Of Me' broke through in the new year and the rest is history, the album swiftly ascended to the top 10 and nearly even reached #1. There wasn't a follow-up hit but there didn't really need to be as 'All Of Me' was top 40 for pretty much the entire year. The album received a re-release at the tail end of the year (which tacked on his older and much better hit 'Ordinary People' as an additional track, now that's just cheating to advertise the album as having more than one hit on it, naughty John) which saw it climb back to #6... in the same week as 'All Of Me' went back up to number FOUR. Ridiculous.

One of the joys of a chart compiled in this way is that a lovely song such as Riptide can appear to be a massive hit cheer.gif The downside is that so can something else nocheer.gif

Singles

4 ~ Clean Bandit - Rather Be [feat. Jess Glynne]
(1-1-1-1-3-3-3-5-7-8-8-9-12-16-16-18-22-21-23-23-25-28-32-24-28-27-29-29-26-26-30-34-31-29-30-32-35-39-43-40-35-43-48-56-60-58-50-46-50-...)
3685pts ~ 49wks

MILES ahead of Mr Probz is Clean Bandit's biggest hit single Rather Be. The track was released in late January 2014 and became the fastest selling single of the year (until Band Aid 30 came along, and Ben Haenow too, and Uptown Funk but not in its debut week). The track was knocked off #1 by Sam Smith's Money On My Mind but decided to hang around for eternity in the top 40 anyway. I've not seen anyone who actually dislikes this track, I know I'm bored of it now but the track is still great and it's not at all hard to see why it's been so huge. Unpopular opinion but I prefer Extraordinary ph34r.gif The track also introduced us to Jess Glynne, and despite this being recorded after Route 94's My Love, which is funnily enough where Clean Bandit heard her vocals for the first time, it got released beforehand and became her first chart topper, with My Love becoming her second not long after. She almost got a third, with Clean Bandit again, with their recent collaboration Real Love, but Band Aid 30 ended up releasing that week and it was no contest really (good cause it's very weak in comparison to this).

4 ~ Arctic Monkeys - AM
(...-8-9-12-14-11-14-11-2-2-5-5-17-21-17-15-13-14-22-28-29-8-7-15-16-18-20-34-26-23-39-18-23-30-17-12-15-32-33-40-44-53-52-52-62-59-71-83-88-81-82-71-39-...)
3720pts ~ 52wks

Tracks in singles list:
105 Do I Wanna Know?
373 R U Mine?
407 Arabella
633 Snap Out Of It
664 Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?

So after spending the entire year in the top 100, the most recent Arctic Monkeys album is unsurprisingly high up in this countdown. It "only" peaked at #2 in 2014, following the BRITs last year, but of course it made #1 in 2013 when it was released. The album has had astounding longevity, spending a very big chunk of the year in the top 40, all without any hit singles to keep it going (other than Do I Wanna Know? still hanging around). Not bad at all. Shame it's not a better act kink.gif

Bré, stop giving Joseph good album acts to comment on. drama.gif

Surprised Rather Be is the lowest of the top 4 actually, guess this means the highest great song isn't what I was expecting it to be cheer.gif
