Oh Yes- this is HAPPENING!

Hello and welcome to my first major countdown of 2015 (and the first one in 10 months) as we celebrate the top 100 teen acts since 1980 based on singles sales.

THE RULES

For solo acts this is easy- the date they turn 20 the sales count will end.
For groups of more than one- when MORE THAN 50% of the group are aged 20 or more.

As per usual in my threads, duets/ collaborations where the act is mentioned individually will count towards their totals.

PRE DOWNLOAD:

Providing a record debuts on the chart before their 20th birthday then ALL sales of the song will count even if they turn 20 during that tracks run. NO DOWNLOAD SALES WILL COUNT AS THESE WILL BE AFTER THEY ARE NO LONGER TEENAGERS

POST DOWNLOAD:

Only sales up until the week the act are no longer a "teen act" will count.

This attempts to slightly redress the balance that post download age acts have, as before that stock was limited so couldn't trickle sell.

Of course the internet can't tell me the birthdays of all acts during this period so it is entirely possible that there is an act I've omitted for which I apologise now. Given the nature of the charts these days there is also an element of estimation in the more recent acts.

Sales period covered is 1980-2014

Thanks go to Vidcapper, MW, MFR, Alan Jones, Wikipedia, youtube, and a few other sources.

This must have been even more of a pain to compile than most of your countdowns! Nonetheless exciting, first (new) Gezza countdown in a while ohmy.gif Quite retro ~

I wish you'd started in 1970 rather than 1980. Then I could have asked how you knew how old The Wombles were tongue.gif Great Uncle Bulgaria was obviously well past his teens. After all, Minuetto Allegretto starts with the line "Back in 1780 when Bulgaria was a lad" biggrin.gif

Looking forward to it! As Bre says, it does sound like this was more difficult to compile than most of your countdowns but I think the download disclaimer is good and will make things fair.

There's a particular famous lady who had a big hit at 19 which I think will surprise some, mainly because I don't think some will have realised she was that young at the time!

I can think of 1 artist at the moment. Though I'm not sure if this is big hit in 80's or the last few years

This will be a very intriguing countdown as many of the "teen acts" over the years were actually in their 20s when they achieved chart success. It'll be interesting to see who makes the list, especially in the lower half of the chart.

I know who you mean for the 80s one but unbelievably for me that's not the one I had in mind! ohmy.gif

I think I know who Liam is talking about tongue.gif

Definitely looking forward to this countdown. Can't imagine how much work must've gone into compiling it.

100. KRIS KROSS (272,000) 5 HITS

Oh yes just 13 when they hit the big time “Daddy Mac” and “Mac Daddy” donned their clothes back to front and were “Totally Krossed Out” for much of 1992. Their biggest hit was of course “Jump” which went to No 2 that summer and topped the US chart for 8 weeks, they also landed a spot supporting Michael Jackson on his “Dangerous” tour that year and got a part in Jacko’s “Jam” video before the hits dried up in 1993. Chris Kelly died in 2013 at just 34 from a drugs overdose.

99.ALED JONES (274,000) 4 HITS

Now of course much more famous for presenting “Songs of Praise” and being a TV presenter, Jones shot to fame in 1985 when his version of “Walking In The Air” made the top 5. Though the song is synonymous with the Channel 4 film “The Snowman” the voice on the film version (which dates from 1982) is actually Peter Auty but its showing every Christmas created a nice piece of promo for the Jones Version that saw him become a popstar as well as a chorister.

I am looking forward to following this. A bit of a depressing start at #100, and makes me wonder about how many of these teenage stars fell from grace following their success. It's a poison chalice for a fair few of them i would have thought sad.gif

Ah I see - I thought it was a countdown of songs, not acts. blush.gif

Not really a fan of either - can only tolerate 'Walking in the Air' when it's on The Snowman! tongue.gif Sad to hear that about Chris Kelly from Kris Kross.

I really shouldn't, but I do love Jump ph34r.gif (never knew about that death though, how horrible sad.gif)

Of course Walking In The Air is still a classic, one of the definitive songs of my childhood!

The person you *may* be thinking of turned 20 later on in 1978, so will not appear here.
