"Poltergeist" is definitely one of those movies that I really wanted see them when I was kid but deliberately avoided to rent from my neighborhood's videoclub because I thought that it would be very scary. I remember that private channels on tv always played it after midnight so it was a bit hard to see it because of my age. The Greek title was attributed as the "Spirit of Evil" and that caused me bad thoughts about its content. I had read a relevant article which it had a negative impact on me. The article said that some of the actors of the film died after shooting the film and that there was a curse that was associated with the early deaths. Eventually, I decided to see it after so many years since we rarely watch horror movies in the cinema and this movie had not been re-released.
"Poltergeist" came out in theaters in 1982 and it was one of the most successful films in the Box Office. I did not know any actor in the cast but the performances were ideal for this film. The truth is that it was not at all scary and the effects seemed fake in most scenes. The fact that this film is quite old did play a role and at the time, the film industry did not have the technique to create stunning effects and an atmosphere of horror in each scene. Nevertheless, the film was proposed by the Academy Oscar for "Best Visual Effects" but lost the Golden Statuette to "ET". It was also proposed for "Best Original Score" and also for "Best Sounnd Editing" which I think was the strongest point of the film. Its plot has an interest without being tiring and prevailing mystery about what is going to happen in the end. Tobe Hooper undertook the direction while Steven Spielberg invented the central idea, wrote the screenplay with Michael Grais and Mark Victor and was co-producer with Frank Marshall. It seems that he believed in the whole thing and the latter reciprocated him with glory and money. It was no accident that many called that time as "The Spielberg Summer" after "ET" and "Poltergeist" were released a week apart.
"Poltergeist" was not as I expected but it is a classic horror film nowadays. It was the eighth most commercial film in 1982, followed by two more sequels without having the same great response as the original film. It has received a pretty good score on IMDb (7,4), which leads me to believe that mainly older people rate it very positively. It is definitely not a bad movie, but I think that I would appreciate it more if I watched it in my childhood. However, it distinguises for some scenes that are classics over the years and for the performance of Zelda Rubinstein, who plays the eccentric psychic.

"[Rec] 2" is a Spanish horror film that was released in the cinemas five years ago. However, it was released in my country a year later directly in the Dvd market. I had heard very good things about the first film and I wanted to rent it from my neighborhood's dvdstore. However, I got confused and instead choose "[Rec]". I accidentally rented the sequel. So I will judge this movie as it is without making comparisons as it would happen if I watched the first film.
"[Rec] 2" was not as scary as I expected and it seemed pretty fake in many parts. Basically, its plot reminded me of the very successful videogames "Resident Evil" and "Silent Hill". The evolution happens in real time, the shots were very close to the faces of the actors and almost all the scenes you saw through the frame of a camera. Surely, this was the concept of the film, but the shaking camera going up and down all the time only caused me a lot of frustration. From the beginning I knew that I would not like it at all. It had amateur interpretations, indifferent characters and common scenario. It was like seeing a mediocre film version of "Silent Hill". From a point and then, listening to constant screaming, very loud voices, mass hysteria and all this created an unbearable situation for me. However, it had some sudden frightening scenes and the end was subversive, but of course I'm not absolutely sure for the latter. After the first hour, I lost complete interest in the film and maybe if I looked better, I would know how it would have ended. However, for a Spanish production, it was not bad because European productions never use big budgets to turn horror movies and this chapter did not fare very badly. I just do not understand this new cinematic trend, turning horror movies with amateur camera to look more realistic. On the contrary, they look more fake on the big screen and the bad performances of the actors make them even worse. Once the cinema offers you sight, it would be preferable these kinds of films rely more on specialized visual effects, very loud sound effects and atmospheric background. And not in improvisations.
"[Rec] 2" is definitely not one of the best horror movies I've seen. I recognize that there are a lot of horror fans who liked it but having seen so many horror movies, I can not classify it in the list with the best of them. It has received a moderate score on IMDb (6.6) - good enough for this genre - and had satisfactory total earnings for European splatter! I would recommend it only to the fans of the survival games that evolve in real time because "[Rec] 2" could have come out as videogame too. If it hasn't happened already.

Blasphemous. sad.gif '[Rec] 2' is one of the best sequels of all time, imo. I absolutely love it and found it terrifying! The first is obviously better, but this one is just as good!

This probably belongs here. One of the creepiest films I watched as a child/teen is The Haunting (1999 remake). I don't dare watch it now, I see that it was panned critically, so I don't want to ruin my childhood memory of it. But yeah, it's probably not great, but not bad either.

Say 'They're here' in THAT voice to anyone of a certain age and they'll be right with you. For it remains among my favourite Horror films (top 10 probably) although I can see how its impact may have diminished, as it's been imitated so often. Having said that Insidious basically ripped off most of the plot so it must still have something.

Rec 2 is pretty good also, Rec 3 however sucks. Sure you didn't mean that one??

As for The Haunting, forget the remake and check out the original for a true classic

I really enjoyed this as a Kid. The school took us to Newcastle for four days and one of the things we did was for and see this and I still absolutely love it.

Talking about good but no great films -

Dark Skies

This Is actually one of my faves but was another film panned by critics. It's such a signs rip off but I wub.gif it.

Also The Invasion

It's not scary per sé but I think it's a rather grand movie.

I didn't say that it was bad..However, I need to watch the first one for having a better opinion about them.

I watched this movie a long time ago. It had some frightening scenes but it wasn't very scary at all. I think that it belongs in this topic too. Very good choice!

*1 I totally agree with you! Many directors of supernatural horror films copied this movie in the last decade. If I had watched it when I was kid or teenager, I would have had a better opinion about it. I felt that it seemed a little bit fake in comparison with the current visual effects. However, it's not a bad film and I'm sure that it has many fans all over the world but it didn't impress me at all.

*2 I watched "Rec 2" but I really wanted to rent the first film. I didn't like the whole concept. The shaky cam always irritates me. Nevertheless, it had many frightening scenes.

I haven't watched "Dark Skies" yet but I watched "Invasion" seven years ago. I don't remember many things about this movie because my ex relationship harrassed me in the cinema.. laugh.gif I think that it was our second date. However, the movie was average. Wise choice!

The Borderlands ( The Last Parayer in US ) is a surprisingly decent movie with real atmosphere on a low budget.

"Solace" is a mystery thriller that was released in my country over four months ago! Initially, it was intended as a sequel to the legendary film of the 90's, "Seven", but plans fell on deaf ears when the director David Fincher raised multiple objections to this possibility! I knew absolutely nothing about the content of the film, but reading the movie plot on a movie site, it excited my curiosity to go and see it at my neighborhood’s open-air cinema!
"Solace" cannot be compared in any way with "Seven", although contributors wanted to promote it to us as a continuation! Although the story was not too far from the shocking film by Fincher, the directing was quite modest and the interpretations of the actors reminded of us the performances of similar television series! "Solace" had a bit of "Seven", a bit of "Saw", a bit of "Final destination" and a bit of "Silence of the Lambs." In short, there was no originality in this endeavor. Its development was boring on several points and there were some emotional cliché among the main protagonists. Anthony Hopkins had the only worthy interpretation, although it reminded me of Hannibal Lecter once again. It was the second time this happened in the last year. The first was in “Kidnapping Mr. Heineken”. I do not want to doubt the interpretative abilities of the recognized British actor, but to be honest, the double diabolical coincidence puzzled me enough. Colin Farrell was not convincing in the role of evil guy and Jeffrey Dean Morgan with Abbie Cornish did not fit at all in this film. The directing of Alfonso Poyart was very dark and yet tedious and the script had only good intentions and nothing else. I do not know what would have happened if they had changed some things in the movie but it is sure that there was no serious reason for its existence. When you want to shoot a film and borrow so many elements from other films, only parody can be made and be good.
Unfortunately, "Solace" was quite a disappointing film. It did not offer us something special and quite tired us with its flat evolution. It seemed to me that it was a rush job that was just filmed in order to collect money, but neither managed to do this in contrast to other movies of its kind. "Solace" had no "charisma" and it was one of the mediocre productions that I watched last year. I would only recommend it to the hardcore fans of its genre. The rest just take a walk.
