UK’s first Official Vinyl Charts launch as vinyl sales soar in 2015
12 April 2015 By Lauren Kreisler We're excited to announce the launch of the UK’s first ever weekly Official Vinyl Charts, published exclusively on OfficialCharts.com, as new figures reveal the vinyl resurgence continues strongly in 2015. Kicking off Record Store Day week 2015, new proof arrives today that Britain’s renewed interest in music on vinyl shows little sign of slowing. 2014 witnessed vinyl LP sales reaching a 20-year high in the UK at 1.29 million, following seven years of unbroken growth, and now new Official Charts Company data for the first quarter of 2015 reveals that this trend is continuing at pace, with vinyl album purchasing up yet again a staggering 69% versus the same period in 2014, and vinyl singles also up 23%. With such enduring love for vinyl from music fans and collectors alike, the Official Charts Company are pleased to introduce the UK’s first ever Official Vinyl Charts. The Official Vinyl Albums Chart Top 40 and Official Vinyl Singles Chart Top 40 (combining sales of 7” and 12” singles) will launch Monday 13 April exclusively on the all-new OfficialCharts.com. Following a period of rapid organic audience growth hitting record traffic of 2.5 million monthly unique users, the newly revamped responsive site – which was awarded Site Of The Fortnight and a 5* review by Web User Magazine as well as being shortlisted for Best Website at this summer’s Brand Republic Digital Awards - will become the exclusive home of the weekly rundown, with the charts published each week on Sundays, 7pm. Martin Talbot, Chief Executive, Official Charts Company comments: “We’re delighted to launch the UK’s first Official Vinyl Albums and Official Vinyl Singles charts on OfficialCharts.com, to coincide with Record Store Day this coming weekend. With vinyl album sales up by almost 70% already this year, vinyl junkies could well have snapped up 2 million units by the end of this year – an extraordinary number, if you consider sales were one-tenth of that just six years ago. Album chart is a good idea, but vinyl singles chart is rather odd idea - they can't sell very many of them judging by the physical singles chart.

I agree, although I suppose there will be some differences as vinyl singles are more likely to sell with indie acts and older acts such as David Bowie and Paul McCartney whilst CDs are more likely to sell with boybands, reality TV singles and charity releases. Because physicals sell so little in general and therefore very little copies separate positions, there could be some somewhat significant differences between the two charts. |

This whole idea of a vinyl revival is, as I've mentioned before, basically bollocks. Looking at those statistics above, even in 2007 - when they were supposedly at a low - you've got this article by the Guardian claiming they're rising, which sounds like it's entirely due to one record (Icky Thump by the White Stripes) selling well: http://www.theguardian.com/business/2007/j...musicnews.music .
Like "retro/vintage" clothing or computer games, it's just recently become a way to make a lot of money from things that are old. This is especially true when you discover that most people who claim they're collecting vinyl don't actually own a record player, they just want to put various LPs on the shelf in a way to hipster up their house. |

I disagree, our local HMV now stocks a large vinyl section - and the sales quoted above from the OCC clearly show a 5 x increase since 2007.

Since the digital age, I feel more inclined to buy vinyls as my physical copy. Like Jade, I've also become a collector and I think lots of other people have too (some always were). New record shops have opened all over East London.

Not to mention that loads of music fans I know claim much superior quality of vinyl recording than CDs or more so - any kind of online music.

While I can see some demand for Albums in this format, a vinyl singles chart, particularly one of 40 places, seems like overkill. What sort of numbers would the Number 40 vinyl single sell in a week? Single figures?

 No, in all seriousness, vinyl has been on the up for the last few years. There's a whole area dedicated to vinyl albums in our local HMV now, whereas only five years previous to that it was where iPods, wireless speakers etc - the very things that sent it to the brink of administration - were stocked. Certainly from HMV's case, they've learnt from their mistakes and have put music back at the heart of its business. Of course there will always be hipsters just getting the vinyl to look 'chic'. But they're still a vital part of the food chain, as it were, and there are people who do genuinely get the vinyl to listen to it are there too. I have a few vinyls of different singles released during this century and listen to them when the mood takes me on my dad's old midi system complete with the individual portals for CD/cassette etc. Surely it's the appreciating music in whatever form takes your mood that's important here? |
