Tbh, I'm having doubts about Andy Burnham. I fear he might be a bit brittle under pressure, plus he has a tendency to lapse into that knee-jerk "the Tories are evil baby-eating bast*rds" mode which really puts people off, not least because it sounds to a lot of people like they're also saying Tory voters are evil which does not exactly encourage them to switch (for all Tony Blair's policies have been a disaster for Labour in the long run, one thing he got spot on was the way he criticised the Tories: a sorrowful "they're doing what they think is best, but they just don't have the life experience to understand how difficult it is for people at the bottom". Nicola Sturgeon's also pretty good at sounding so sober when she criticises the opponents).
That said, for all Burnham's flaws, the alternatives seem even worse. Yvette would do as well as Miliband at best imo, the rest even worse. This post has been edited by Danny: May 9 2015, 01:01 PM |

Not sure about Burnham myself to much flexibility in his views - moved from righ in government to left in opposition. Is opponent for the Tories esp with his links to the past, same for Cooper. I want a real person with real life experience as leader this time.

Dan Jarvis should get it but I think Burnham or Cooper WILL get it. Dan's a bit inexperienced and has had no prominent shadow roles but is certainly a possible future leader imo.
Two women fighting the 2020 election anyone? PM May against Cooper! This post has been edited by Common Sense: May 10 2015, 02:46 PM |

Yeh there will be the usual vote system after the leadership election or did Ed get rid of that?
Anyone else think Ed will still be prominent in the party in the coming yrs? It's not like Brown or Blair stepping down after 20 yrs? |

The BBC are reporting that Dan Jarvis has ruled himself out.

I love this growing idea from people like Liz Kendall that the reason people in a rundown place like Hastings didn't vote Labour is because they were too nasty to millionaires. I mean seriously.

Awful news. That's me on the Liz Kendall train (unless Yvette impresses), though I wonder if she can overcome the juggernaut of support Andy Burnham will have.

I really don't see why everyone is ruling out Yvette - famous husband, Most Haunted fame - she'll be getting votes for that alone!!! - got more votes than Ed last time, prob due to her fame, and is a Blairite.

You should atleast go for Chuka if you want the 'Blairite' option He would atleast keep London on board even while alienating everyone else, I'm not sure we can even be sure of that with Liz Kendall. |

Jarvis has cited his family as the reason for not standing. He has three children, two from his first wife who died of cancer. As those two children have already lost their mother, he doesn't want to leave them effectively without their father as well. He should be commended for putting his family ahead of personal ambition.

Chuka Umunna is quite unlikeable, imo. Plus Liz Kendall is female and it's high time Labour chose a female as their permanent leader. |

I can't help but feel though, that like UK entrants in the Eurovision Song Contest - the leadership of the Labour Party is a bit of a poisoned chalice! Besides anything else - I honestly can't see Labour getting into power until at least 2025 (if at all!) The Tories are going to push through changes with impunity now that the Liberals aren't there to temper them ... the biggest thing for me is the constituency boundary changes that are ahead. I think we have to face the fact that the we are now a one-party state - so we'd best just make the most of it. This post has been edited by Kath: May 10 2015, 10:33 PM |

I think we have to face the fact that the we are now a one-party state - so we'd best just make the most of it. The boundary changes were always based on a lie. The Tories consistently claimed that the current boundaries favoured Labour. This claim is untrue. The reason they appeared to favour Labour is that the turnout in safe Labour seats is generally a lot lower than the turnout in safe Tory seats. Therefore the Tories pile up a lot more votes that don't matter than Labour do. On Thursday, the Tories won one seat for every 34,244 votes cast. Labour won one seat for every 40,290 votes. Other parties, of course, fared even worse. It took 301,988 votes to elect a Lib Dem MP, 1,157613 votes for a Green MP and 3,881,129 votes for a |

Did you watch the Sunday Politics interview? At least Liz has the left behind UKIP switchers in mind. I doubt Chuka thinks Labour's problems are any more complex than 1994. |
