In YOUR opinion it isn't an excuse, in mine it is. A lot of people probably zoned out when Ricky started performing [which is exactly what my flatmate did] because he's...irrelevant in this country. That's fair enough, I hadn't considered that actually and I see your POV now. No harm in debating... |

'Stole The Show' is very poor compared to 'Firestone', but he's capable of greatness.

I do like 'Black Magic' but I would be disappointed if it managed to go to #01 as it doesn't sound like a #01 song in the slightest. I do think the charts are crying for pop songs right now though. 'Disco Love' would have went #01 on iTunes had it not been for new releases so imagine how it would have performed with decent enough radio airplay. Wasn't that released the same week as Wrecking Ball, Berzerk, R U Crazy and Cheating? Would have been one of the campest #1s ever! I think pure pop songs do well enough already More of them will turn even more people off the charts than are already and are always gonna have limited sales to certain demographics. Since 2013, the charts have been relatively varied and lots of good stuff has charted. Hopefully this continues, but I do agree that pure pop will eventually become dominant again. In an ideal world, we'd have a 00s revival with all the great Hip Hop/R&B records as inspiration! Tinie's new song has got a decent boost from the video premiere as well. Still can't see it getting to #1 though. |

I'm not sure of the point being made here. All songs are limited to certain demographics, are they not? Anything song that is popular, which it has to be to make #1 really, seems unlikely to make people turn off just because it's pop. |

6. Jessie J - Flashlight
10. Major Lazer & DJ Snake ft. MO - Lean On 13. The Weeknd - The Hills 18. Mans Zelmerlow - Heroes 21. Charles Hamilton ft. Rita Ora - New York Raining 26. Florence & The Machine - Ship To Wreck 44. Sheppard Geronimo 61. Nicki Minaj ft. Beyonce - Feeling Myself 65. Natalie La Rose ft. Jeremih - Somebody 94. Loic Nottet - Rhythm Inside 96. Charli XCX - Famous 188. Lawson - Roads Have to say, I'm still baffled by the long-term success of Ship To Wreck, it has to honestly be F&TM's worst single to date Thrilled for The Weeknd Jessie J, its a no from me Surprised that Sheppard hasn't dropped out the top 100 yet, I assumed this would have a Tulisa/Conor type run Loic & Mans doing much better than I expected they would Nicki & Beyonce did incredibly well off the back of a video, especially with no promo or single release Lawson entering the top 200 on Pre-Orders |

Anything song that is popular, which it has to be to make #1 really, seems unlikely to make people turn off just because it's pop. You'd be surprised how many #1s aren't really that popular - just because its the biggest selling song of the week doesn't mean it has widespread appeal. I think more people would be put off a song if its pure or cheesy Pop than any other genre. Of course, if the song is catchy enough it can still do well (e.g. Call Me Maybe) but there's a large proportion of people who wouldn't be seen dead listening to stuff like that. The massive songs of recent years are ones like Get Lucky, Blurred Lines, Happy & Uptown Funk - crossover hits which are not 'guilty pleasures' to listen to. They appeal to a wider audience than artists like Little Mix or The Saturdays. |

It got performed on BGT then? Hopefully it doesn't have too much of an effect, you already know how much I hate that song Indeed it did, but I agree I doubt it'll have a huge effect at this stage. Surely everyone who wants/wanted that song has it now! You hate it? You never mentioned that before |

You never mentioned that before well you would think that, but it doesn't explain why people are still buying songs like Lose Yourself and Mr Brightside over 10 years after its release (currently #231 and #268). I guess some songs just keep on selling. Anyway 'Let It Go' is now at #92, not sure how significant a climb that is as I'm not sure where it previously was. |

Older songs (as in pre-iTunes) tend to sell more though, because people tend to not have them in their iTunes collections. "Let It Go" on the other hand is very recent, and most people who wanted it probably already bought it. This post has been edited by dhwe: 29th May 2015, 08:54 PM |
