There's no denying that she can still sell out a tour or sell merchandise, just from her loyal fan base. But, what about the interest from the general public. Britney has changed up her look before. Just see the 'Britney' era and the 'Blackout' era. Do you think her pulling a Miley and changing her hairstyle would help reignite her in the charts? Discuss

Let's face it: Slave and Gimme More were career-defining (and possibly decade-defining) songs, and they really defected from the lighter side of her. Maybe something as edgy as those would get her to the top.

She could change her look all she wants but if she released another 'Pretty Girls' it'd probably do even worse. Because she's been around for so long and she's a Mom, her team expect different things from her. But I think people forget that she's still relatively young and could still reinvent herself. She's the same age as Beyoncé and only a few years older than Katy Perry & Lady Gaga. Jennifer Lopez had a huge comeback when she was 40 so it's definitely doable. I agree with everything that you've said. I think she does know how to lead instead of follow, I'm actually not sure if it has to do with the freedom (or lack of) she's been given regarding her music in the later years. But when it comes to her commiting 100% we're graced with some of her best work ever: In The Zone and Blackout being her best ever records does not come as a coincidence. This is very selfish, but I personally would like her doing something very avant garde, even if it's not commercially successful (which I actually wouldn't mind anyways). Something similar in sound to Visage or Ultravox.

Everything up to Circus was big and pretty much everything until that point had something for people to talk about. Oops! was (slightly) more mature and had hype just from being her second album, self-titled was "omg she's growing up", ITZ was "omg she's grown up", Blackout was "omg she's so edgy" and Circus was "omg she's happy again yay". Then there wasn't really anything particular to talk about regarding Femme Fatale and the same went for Britney Jean - the closest thing to a gimmick that had was her getting writing credits on everything. And nobody cares about that except the stans. As much as I believe Britney's music being great is the main reason for her success, she has always done best when she got people talking. She hasn't given people anything to talk about since 2009 and that's why people think she's irrelevant/old/boring now, because they remember how Britney USED to be a constant talking point but isn't anymore. She's so vanilla now compared to what she once was. She needs to surprise people again, she courted controversy amazingly well in the past (even if that wasn't always intentional) and I firmly believe she is entirely capable of doing it again if she wants to. But I doubt she does, and her management seem terrified to take any risks with her (see the 'Perfume' video which would have been SO Britney had it not been ruined). Unfortunately, you just don't excite the general public just by releasing decent music. 'Pretty Girls' almost got it right because the video had lots of personality, the song was different and having a rapper on a Britney song is gonna be vaguely worthy of discussion, but it lacked anything shocking and it ended up with people thinking either "lol Britney acts like such a bimbo in her new video what an idiot" or "lol Britney's done a feature with Iggy Azalea that laughing stock rapper, look at her trying to be relevant again". I'm glad they're trying new things but they're not trying the right new things, and I'm not sure how many chances she has left.

Femme Fatale was a very well-made album but it wasn't exciting like the last decade of music she'd released had been because it didn't offer anything different, it didn't have any real significance in her discography outside of being a collection of good songs. Britney Jean was the exact same except it can't even claim to be a good album musically as it's essentially just 'Work Bitch' and a pile of crap to accompany it. The last few years of being a Britney fan have been really boring - for someone who was consistently surprising and amazing me for so long and who has created some of the best music videos of the century, she hasn't excited me visually or musically for a long time. I want the Britney who tried new things back, 2009-2015Ney isn't the same.

escape in the taste of summerrrrrr Joined: 8 August 2009 Posts: 27,310 User: 9,403	she needs her RATED R moment, not in terms of yet more trauma but there's definitely like a darker edgier britney to be had, she's had life experiences which will serve her so well. then again the charts do have really boring music in them atm which i don't think she could conform to. i do think if she did a eurodance album that wasn't spearheaded by will.i.am she could do very well as well.

I truly believe she has it in her to make another great album, but she needs to puts her heart and soul into it.

I found myself agreeing with his post a lot and he worded it much better than I ever could tbh. We need a 'Confessions' style reinvention era from her (if 'Blackout' is serving as her 'Ray Of Light'). I think this whole 'Tom's Diner' thing (which seems to have even the biggest sceptical of Britney fans liking it) could be a great starting point for her!

What she NEEDS to do is fully address her breakdown and embrace it. We can still have Blackoutney in a MARKETED way.
