Just idle speculation, as their respective record companies would never risk releasing an album on the same week, but if they *did*, who would end up #1?

I'd hope Adele would thrash 1D but sadly I could see it being a close battle as I'm sure both acts highest first week sales have been about 250k.
I know 1D only sold 140k last year but with this being their last album anything could happen but I've gone for Adele as she is in another league! |

No contest, Adele's '21' has sold more than all of OD albums combined , and with good marketing, I could see Adele selling up to 500k on week one! |

I think 500k is VERY optimistic in this day and age, it won't sell anywhere near that. But yes if they were released on the same day, Adele would easily outsell 1D. |

Of course, if back in 2011 before '21' was released you'd have suggested *any* album could sell 4.75m, that would have seemed equally optimistic... |

Of course, if back in 2011 before '21' was released you'd have suggested *any* album could sell 4.75m, that would have seemed equally optimistic... True, but album sales were much healthier in 2011 than they are now. Some big artists have under-performed with new albums this year, and that's just down to a general decline in album sales. I know Adele's album will be the most hotly anticipated of the year but I still think 500k on its first week is wildly optimistic. Obviously it also depends on how good the first single is. What did her last album open with anyway? |

Adele but it isn't going to happen, I think it's going to be 1d verses Justin Bieber instead

Adele would trump them, but I really am not certain her album will be released this year...

Adele will of course have very strong sales on name alone, but it will vastly depend on music quality. She can easily do 100-200k on week one, but everything above will depend how the single(s) catch up with the public.

Nice, with Now 92 out the same day that will be a good week for music sales (if it's true).
I'd anticipate an opening sale of around 300k, even if that does sound ridiculous in today's market, I reckon enough hype will be there. This post has been edited by gooddelta: Sep 23 2015, 01:52 PM |

With this release date I can see Adele selling consistently high sales leading up to Xmas

Traditionally mega selling acts like Mumford & Sons and Michael Buble have really not benefitted from early-mid year releases over the last couple of years so Adele is sensible to release in the run up to Xmas to ensure it doesn't look like a flop if it 'only' sells 1 million copies if it was released in April or something. If it's released on 20th November it could easily shift a million, if not a lot more if I'm underestimating the hype, within five weeks.
The Corrs will of course knock her off for a week on November 27th though |

That makes the 500k suggestion even more ridiculous then Yes but it sold that in January, and the fact that it went on to sell 4m copies suggests that people hadn't caught on to the Adele phenomenon in the week of release. Released in the lead up to Christmas, and off the back of one of the biggest albums of all time, I could easily see 300k + first week. |

Adele will easily get the highest first week sale of the year, it'll probably outdo the opening sales of '21' too as it's in Q4 and a new Adele album has been long awaited for and will be hyped a lot. 500k is pushing it but 200k+ seems doable.

Oh Adele for sure, the hype has been ongoing basically ever since the colossal '21' era for more. The one thing 1D would have in their favour would be the whole 'final album' tag but not even that would be enough to overcome Adele's sales, especially in Q4.
