Coldplay’s Official Top 20 Best Selling Singles Revealed!
06 February 2016 By Justin Myers Coldplay have been a dominant force on the Official Charts for over a decade and a half and now they're taking on the huge might of the Super Bowl Halftime Show, following in the footsteps of Madonna, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry to name but a few. Although it's been strongly rumoured their latest album A Head Full of Dreams is to be their last, lead singer Chris Martin insists the band aren't breaking up – they just don't know what's coming after their tour. They've topped the Official Albums Chart six times, but what about the singles? As any rock band will tell you, it's all about the songs, man. They’ve scored 21 Top 40 hits, including 16 Top 10s in the process, two of which were chart-toppers. You can check out all of Coldplay's singles and albums and where they charted here. But which of their big ones come out on top when it comes to sales? 1: Paradise (2011) There’s nothing quite like a good old slow-burner on the Official Singles Chart, and Paradise certainly took its own sweet time. The group’s second chart-topper, it finally reached Number 1 on its tenth week in the chart, knocking off Military Wives and Gareth Malone with Wherever You Are. The first Number 1 of 2012, Paradise has sold over 954,500 copies! It lasted a week at the top before Flo Rida’s Good Feeling gave it a nudge. 2: Viva La Vida (2008) The band’s first Number 1 was a long time coming – after nine Top 10s, the guys were definitely due a chart-topper. The follow-up to Violet Hill, the track was taken from the band’s fourth studio album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, which has sold over 1.48 million copies. Viva La Vida itself knocked Mint Royale’s version of Singin’ In The Rain off the top spot and was usurped a week later by Ne-Yo’s Closer. It’s sold over 811,000 copies. 3: Fix You (2005) One of the band’s signature ballads, Fix You was supposedly written by front-man Chris Martin for his wife Gwyneth Paltrow following the devastating loss of her father. Of course, that famous ‘conscious uncoupling’ would follow nine years later, but the song is still a huge crowd-pleaser, not to mention tearjerker. It peaked at Number 4 and has shifted over 666,000 copies. 4: Princess Of China (2012) If there's one thing Rihanna loves, it's an all-star collaboration. But perhaps her unlikeliest one yet saw her team up with Chris and the guys for this Top 10 from 2011. Chris even claimed to have secretly wrote with her in mind – and she said yes! Rihanna memorably performed the song with the band at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. Princess Of China reached Number 4 and has sold over 560,000 copies. On Rihanna’s best sellers’ list, it’s in 13th place. Blimey. 5: Yellow (2000) So here's where it all began, with their very first Top 10. Coldplay’s breakthrough hit went straight in at Number 4 and was taken from their debut album Parachutes, which has sold over 2.6 million copies. So which three records blocked Yellow from the Number 1 spot? Kylie Minogue’s Spinning Around (3), Samantha Mumba, new in at Number 2 with Gotta Tell You and Eminem’s The Real Slim Shady new at Number 1. Yellow has sold over 530,000 copies in the UK. Other notable entries: The Scientist just missed the Top 5, but the Number 10 hit from 2002 is one of their most famous tunes, and has sold over 365,000 copies. 2014 Top 10 A Sky Full Of Stars comes in seventh, with over 338,000 sales and I Go To Rio-inspired Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is up in eighth with sales of 310,000 copies. Latest single Adventure of a Lifetime already makes an appearance at Number 14 with 189,000 sales. Here’s Coldplay’s full Official Top 20 Best Selling Singles: TRACK PEAK POSITION YEAR 1 PARADISE 1 2011 954,500 2 VIVA LA VIDA 1 2008 811,000 3 FIX YOU 4 2005 666,000 4 PRINCESS OF CHINA (WITH RIHANNA) 4 2012 560,000 5 YELLOW 4 2000 530,000 6 THE SCIENTIST 10 2002 365,000 7 A SKY FULL OF STARS 9 2014 338,000 8 EVERY TEARDROP IS A WATERFALL 6 2011 310,000 9 CLOCKS 9 2003 10 MAGIC 10 2014 11 SPEED OF SOUND 2 2005 12 VIOLET HILL 8 2008 13 IN MY PLACE 2 2002 14 ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME 7 2015 189,000 15 CHARLIE BROWN 22 2012 16 TROUBLE 10 2000 17 CHRISTMAS LIGHTS 13 2010 18 TALK 10 2005 19 LOST 54 2008 20 LIFE IN TECHNICOLOR 2 28 2009 © 2016 The Official Charts Company. Like the Rihanna list, most of these sales are irrelevant given how much streaming boosts the actual sales - 'Yellow' is Platinum and 'The Scientist' is Gold, for instance.

And 'A Sky Full Of Stars' was certified Platinum on 22 May 2015 yet it has only sold 338,000 downloads. That leaves a lot of streaming sales to make it up to 600,000+ "sales". It had only been certified Gold on 21 November 2014 which means in 6 months it managed to add another 200,000 sales. Most of those must have been streaming sales. |

Note that Paradise has ~119K of ineligible sales from when instant grats were excluded from the chart.
The last figure I had for Paradise was 968,723 back in October 2014 however that included streams so I'm assuming the figure of 954,500 is sales-only which does mean it is a million seller (inc. the excluded sales) with sales of approximately 1,073,500 and it is selling at ~500/week. If you included its streaming contribution (somewhere ~70K) that gives it a full total of 1,143,500 which puts it at #43 in the decade-to-date chart. This is slightly off topic but do the BPI include sales that weren't included for the charts? As surely certifications are different and a sale is a sale. I remember Tori Amos' American Doll Pose album having its deluxe edition not count towards the chart as it was deemed too good value or something stupid like that, would those sales then count towards its total any way for certification purposes? |

I assume not sadly, the process is automated and is taken from a data feed provided by the Official Charts Company.

Agreed- it did disappoint me when they decided to allow instant-grat sales but didn't retrospectively include those sales previous excluded.

Surely that was because they couldn't distinguish between "sales" generated when the track was free when pre-ordering the album, or genuine sales of the individual track?

There was a period when they were, hence the 119K figure that was given by the OCC on ineligible sales. They only changed the rules because David Bowie was going to miss out on a Top 10 hit with Where Are We Now? |

I assume not sadly, the process is automated and is taken from a data feed provided by the Official Charts Company. I think they do actually, as backed up by 'Do What You Want' going Gold a couple of weeks ago (its eligible sales were just over 200k when it was last in the chart and I didn't think it likeky that trickle sales and streams made up the rest of the total alone). |

Quoting myself here but I'm still curious about 'A Sky Full Of Stars'. Streaming sales for other Coldplay titles seem to be in the 50k to 70k region. For this particular track they are over 260,000 and indeed are probably going to be a higher than that now, possibly a lot higher. I'm curious why this track has been so heavily streamed compared to any of their other tracks. I'm wondering whether the download sales quoted by the OCC are correct? Has the OCC previously given any download sales figures for this track? |

No, they haven't. TBH I would have thought that Clocks would be higher than 300,000, but I guess not. Even more surprising than that is the fact that it's been outsold by ETIAW

Also, it just goes to show how terrible music sales were from 2002 to 2005 when two songs which reached number 2 (Speed of Sound and In My Place) don't even make the top 10

Pity that Midnight is their most interesting single and not in the chart. This!! I had high hopes for an esoteric exisentialist natural album on hearig that but got more commercial music :/ Their first albums before being so commercial were so much better. I think they are a pop band now? |

There was a period when they were, hence the 119K figure that was given by the OCC on ineligible sales. They only changed the rules because David Bowie was going to miss out on a Top 10 hit with Where Are We Now? Exactly and from then on every first instant grat was chart eligible, the others not until the point where iTunes finally managed to separate the sales of individual track sales from the album pre-orders. Now every instant grat can chart with the individual track sales (as far as I know) |

Silly question possibly, but where's Hymn for the Weekend?
Edit: Hmm, I guess it's not sold enough pure sales to make the list, but that seems odd to me. |
