It was so silly to start advertising the single version of When We Were Young on the front of iTunes when the album version was top 5...

I suppose Lukas Graham's days at #1 on iTunes are numbered as Lisa Scott-Lee will be there instead by this time next week

Hope there's someone is a song written from the guts, the words are as important as the music, so no stupid covers should be allowed, neither the abomination that Avicii did nor the Birdy cover at the Olympics, you cannot go and take such a deep meaningful song and sing it like if it was a shopping list...

"Hope There's Someone" by Antony and the Johnsons was actually performed by one of Ricky Wilson's team (Voice) but Boy George performed on their Debut Album, guess he used his influence to put this song up for selection.

I don't see any problems with cover versions. You should just handle them in their places and not compare them to original songs. For example on a party where I would like to dance and feel myself happy, I wouldn't care what the lyrics are |

Can't you? I mean, look at Jonas Blue and Dakota. Isn't that exactly the point he's making though? Aside from being on top of current trends, that hasn't been very well received, at least not around here. It's that it's touching an originally lyrically dependent song with almost no regard for those lyrics that's what's really getting to people, it's a very clear example of a 'shopping list' cover. Jonas Blue COULD have knocked up some quick meaningless lyrics and released almost the same track. Not that he would have, because this is selling almost entirely on people's familiarity with the track. It's the same reason Birdy's covers were so panned, covers are very difficult things to get critical acclaim for, especially when lots of people love the original and can't help but compare the two, you often almost NEED to have a singer with a distinct voice themselves (and for them to do something interesting with the track) for it to be well received, because then there's a reason to have both tracks in your life. |

It's what people want from music. Not everyone's cares for "emotionally touching" or "meaningful lyrics" from a song. To use Fast Car as an example, I love both versions in completely different ways. The original is an all time classic with a fantastic vocal, and the cover is beautifully produced. As soon as you start throwing the "is it as good as the original" line around you'll almost never be able to enjoy a cover ever again (with a few exceptions) which is why I tend to view them as completely separate entities on the most part.

The point I was making was that just because people shouldn't be making 'shopping list' covers of deep meaningful songs doesn't mean they're going to stop doing it. Thankfully most of these flop, but unfortunately we see instances (such as Jonas Blue) actually outpeak the originals and even take their place. |
