53. FIREWORK KATY PERRY 1,099,000

The “Teenage Dream” era remains Perry’s most successful producing five US No 1 singles including this one, it only made No 3 here peaking lower than either “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream” but outselling both easily.

52. CRAZY GNARLS BARKLEY 1,100,000

Receiving heavy BBC radio support and used on their TV ad before release, “Crazy” of course created chart history by becoming the first song to make No 1 despite only being available on download back in 2006. It ended up retiring after 9 weeks at the top, the longest stint since Wet Wet Wet back in 1994.

51. BLEEDING LOVE LEONA LEWIS 1,109,000

Taking just 3 weeks to become the biggest selling single of 2007, this track held on to the year end to become the first single by a UK female soloist to become the biggest selling of any year in chart history. Co-written by Ryan Tedder for Jesse McCartney’s album “Departure” it was rejected by his record label and got offered to Lewis who promptly took it to the top on both sides of the Atlantic.

50. USE SOMEBODY KINGS OF LEON 1,114,000

Prior to 2008 Kings Of Leon had received critical appreciation but had met only with middling single success and unspectacular album sales. Of course “Only By The Night” changed that and made them, briefly, one of the biggest names in the charts, this track spent over 70 weeks in the top 75 peaking at No 2 behind Leona Lewis’ “Run” which it eventually outsold (it rests at No 96 here).

49. DON'T YOU WORRY CHILD SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA FT MARTIN 1,126,000

For a chart act with just over 2 years in existence Swedish House Mafia scored 6 top 20 singles from 6 releases, none bigger than this which was their final single and first UK No 1. It was spurred on the news that the group would dismantle following a final tour and melodically borrows from Milky’s 2003 single “Be My World”.

48. WHAT DO YOU MEAN JUSTIN BIEBER 1,136,429

Becoming his first chart topper in both the UK and the US, Bieber really arrived in the pop “A list” in UK terms last year with this smash. It was a slight departure material and production wise and naturally came with a new image in an attempt to break him to a new audience, it seems to have worked.

Incredible to think that Kings of Leon have 2 million sellers, and that is genuine million-sellers not just from a streaming top-up.

47. SORRY JUSTIN BIEBER 1,152,594

And how it worked! Here he is again with his second million seller in a row, “Sorry” played second fiddle for a few weeks to Adele’s “Hello” before taking charge itself thanks to two promo’s doing the rounds for the track. Bieber roped in Skrillex on production and co-writing duties to deliver what is, in my opinion, his best work to date.

46. DIAMONDS RIHANNA 1,157,000

Silly Sia giving her finest work away, in truth Rihanna probably generated a bigger paycheck than she’d have got had she have released it herself. It became Rihanna’s 7th UK chart topper and her 12th Stateside and gave her the perfect start to the “Unapologetic” era.

45. ROLLING IN THE DEEP ADELE 1,163,000

Narrowly missing out on becoming Adele’s first chart topper thanks to Bruno Mars and his “Grenade” (where’s that now eh?- Well No 75 to be exact), few predicted what it would do for Adele as it launched her into an international popstar, perhaps the biggest one at present. It also cracked the US market becoming her first chart topper over there.

Incredible to see Use Somebody and Don't You Worry Child as high as the top 50, I wouldn't have called it for either. The success of the latter still pleases me to this day.

So this means that roughly one third of all the million selling singles come from these last ten years.

44. LEAN ON MAJOR LAZER FT DJ SNAKE & MO 1,166,000

Or Diplo by another name. Offered to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj in a slightly slower arrangement and rejected by both, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, it was denied the top slot by Jason Derulo (No 100) and is apparently the most streamed song ever on Spotify to date.

43. SEE YOU AGAIN WIZ KHALIFA FT CHARLIE PUTH 1,191,000

Penned specifically for the late actor Paul Walker as tribute, and featured in his last film “Furious 7” it sold 193k in its first week in 2015, a total bettered only by Adele’s “Hello”. It gave both acts their first taste of chat topping glory and topped the US charts for an impressive 12 weeks.

42. ONLY GIRL IN THE WORLD RIHANNA 1,202,000

Much like MAGIC (No 85) debuting at No 2 behind a Cheryl Cole record is actually a pretty good thing, here “Only Girl” played second fiddle to “Promise This” before taking the reins selling over 350k in just 21 days. Signaling an evolution to her sound it was one of three tracks in the top 10 for her simultaneously in December 2010.
