41. CHASING CARS SNOW PATROL 1,205,000

Dear God I’d forgotten how long “Chasing Cars” spent in the charts- a whopping 111 weeks in the top 75 alone with only 210k of these sales coming in the year of release 2006. It spent 17 weeks in the charts before being excluded as the physical CD was deleted, once the charts allowed for digital release only to count it re-entered at No 9, it was also the last song ever to be played on “Top Of The Pops”.

40. POKER FACE LADY GAGA 1,208,000

More electro-pop from Gaga’s classic era, the song has a long winding climb to the top taking 10 weeks to make it, the longest continual run of the year. Dealing with bisexuality it boasted another instantly memorable promo which helped the track become the biggest selling single of 2009.

39. LA LA LA NAUGHTY BOY FT SAM SMITH 1,211,000

Getting a grant from the Prince’s trust coupled with winning £44k on “Deal Or No Deal” helped Naughty Boy to get himself started in the business but all he had to show by 2009 was a No 36 single “Phat Beach”. That year however he helped to produce and write Chipmunk’s “Diamond Rings” which led to some hits with Emeli Sande with whom he was due to write material for his debut album. As Sande was on tour he wrote some songs with Sam Smith and together they (along with others) came up with this, the first No 1 for both acts and a million seller to boot.

Nice to see Chasing Cars here since there's not much from the glorious year that was 2006. It's such a fantastic song that so many went off due to overplay and that lengthy chart run. Still love it personally.

It's staggering than out of all the great singles that 2006 produced Chasing Cars is the best selling cry.gif

all he had to show by 2009 was a No 36 single “Phat Beach”

Phat Beach was an unrelated act with the same name - Discogs says it was a group of German DJs.

38. ALL ABOUT THAT BASS MEGHAN TRAINOR 1,212,000

Co-penned by Trainor this was offered to both Beyonce and Adele as she was without a contract at the time. Needless to say they turned it down and as soon as Trainor got a deal this was polished up to become her debut single, it hit the top in the US and became the first single here to make the top 40 on streaming “sales” alone. The digital release saw the song fly 33-1.

37. WE ARE YOUNG FUN FT JANELLE MONAE 1,214,000

A song that did little until it was covered by Glee then licensed for use in a car advert that aired during the Superbowl which sent the song to the top in the US for 6 weeks and garnered attention worldwide. In the UK release was delayed until April 2012 and initially charted 7-3-3-3-5-2 before finally overcoming Rita Ora to steal a week at the top.

36. LOVE ME LIKE YOU DO ELLIE GOULDING 1,214,000

Goulding’s second No 1 was of course written for the soundtrack to the film of the moment “Fifty Shades Of Grey”, originally intended for Demi Lovato it eventually wound its way into the path of Goulding thanks to the director of the film knowing Goulding through her contribution to the “Hunger Games” soundtrack. Goulding was, apparently, not keen on doing the song preferring to focus on working on that third album, good job she changed her mind.

Not quite true - this was (according to Wikipedia) the last live performance on a weekly show, on the penultimate weekly show (the final weekly show was all archive performances). There have of course been Christmas & New Year shows with live performances since then.

Tove Lo is one of the writers of Love me Like You Do, wonder why she didn't keep it for herself... or maybe they thought she wasn't a big name yet...

35. GHOST ELLA HENDERSON 1,221,000

Ryan Tedder’s been a busy man according to this thread! Here he is again helping Ella Henderson launch her career with a bang. Henderson finished 6th in “X Factor” not a position known for generating chart topping acts (even Chico finished 5th) but she bucked the trend even overturning a disadvantage to 5 Seconds Of Summer in its second week to keep the top slot. And of course it gave Buzzjack the poster known as Mirror Man. Joy.

34. PRICE TAG JESSIE J FT B.O.B 1,233,000

Jessie J is not in this game for the money- OK?!!! Well if you believe the lyrics to “Price Tag” then that’s the truth, her third show on this survey is also the third of her chart toppers here and by far the biggest. It was largely expected to cede the top spot to “Born This Way” but defended its crown easily until a BRITS performance by Adele saw it off.
