6th March 2016

It’s a 41st Number one for Pet Shop Boys, sounding very late 90’s-period PSB’s, smooth EDM. Neil and Chris have never had more than a 2 or 3 year gap between chart-toppers since first doing it over 30 years ago with West End Girls. The previous topper was with Example, it was on a Thursday. Vaults get runners-up with the gorgeous One Last Night, and FKA Twigs grabs her first top 5 with the lovely Good To Love. Highest new entry at 6 is a track to be played at a funeral this week, a track from 2000 that I knew, and loved, but was somehow unable to find out who or what it was. It’s a chill-out classic, you will likely know it, but you may not know that you know it. The orchestral hook is taken from a 1968 Engelbert Humperdinck record and re-worked by Kinobe. So 16 years late it finally charts.

Talking of charting at new peaks belatedly, thanks to Deadpool (which I saw again, fab film) Juice Newton’s 1981 minor version (in my charts) of Angel In The Morning enters at 15. It kicks off the movie beautifully, and is a power-country-ballad version of a song that first charted for Mary Mason in 1977 for me. So, 35 years late, it hits a new peak. As does another track from Deadpool, X Gon Give It To Ya, which DMX took to a measly 68 in 2003, but which finally hits the top 40 13 years late. DJ Fresh and Dizzee grab another top 10, as do Mott & Bowie’s Dudes back in the top 10 after a 44-year absence.

Sammy Davis Jnr gets his first-ever top 10 hit, 44 years after he was denied The Candy Man doing it (in 1972 I only allowed UK charting singles in my chart, but his USA chart-topper was a fave). Justice at last! Biggest climber is pill popping Mike Posner, the late Viola Beach make my top 30, and Elvis gets If I Can Dream into the chart for a 4th time (albeit a new version), 1969 it went top 5, and most recently in 2007 it also went top 5. New entries outside the 40: All saints are back with One Strike, hooray! Nearly 20 years since they started a run of a dozen hits or so. a-ha are also back lengthening their run to over 30 years, and Kate Bush is back again with This Woman’s Work (thanks to The Voice) which will help it rise inside my top 800 listing (given it away!).

Hi Jason, thanks - Ive never really tried to list my top 3 PSB's (I think we're overdue a Retro PSB rate!) so many to choose from! I'd prob go for the obvious ones - West End Girls, It's A Sin, What Have I Done or Heart. Or I might slip in a couple of less obvious ones like Left To My Own Devices, or an album track like the gorgeous Footsteps. When the Quickie Rate pops up I'll have to choose the order!

Mike Posner future UK number 1 by the look of it! cheer.gif

cheers!

Hey James, yes still loving Faded, and it's getting a boost from Ken Bruce on radio 2 playing a fab orchestral version which I have to buy too. I had no idea Alan was only 18! Could be the record of 2016 for me... (so far) cool.gif

KING is lovely, though not to be confused with 80's band King unless they take to wearing Doc Martens and have long hair.

I'm t'other way round with Beyonce and Coldplay laugh.gif Often love Beyonce's stuff but often very meh about it too, Coldplay I usually love. ohmy.gif

cheers!

Shame VAULTS didn't beat Pet Shop Boys. I quite like the latter's track but it still feels like a lesser version of one of their older songs to me.

Also, how has Florence slipped out of the top 4? She was supposed to be there all year long.

ALSO... FORTY ONE number ones? ohmy.gif You're obsessed! Do you have a list of them and how many weeks each that you could share?

Hi dandy*

thanks for dropping by! cool.gif PSB's only just beat Vaults but they always have an inbuilt bias loyalty brand advantage going on with me laugh.gif That's possibly why so many of their number one's are one-weekers. You're right it does sound like a lesser version of an older PSB track, but I like it anyway, the lyrics are retro nostalgic which gives it a bit more of an edge for me.

Florence dropped cos I didn't play it last week. ohmy.gif I know, it's shocking! Plus there's so much competition 6 months in the top 5 was the best I could gift laugh.gif

OK, you asked so here's the PSB chart-toppers, all 41 - two of them are as artists on Bowie and Robbie tracks, though they had a good hand in both, but that only compensates for the 2 EP tracks off Before which topped the chart in each of their own right as tracks off the B Sides compilation, but I lumped them together cos I loved them at the time more than the lead track and listed it as an EP at the time. Either way it's 41 different PSB songs, plus 2 as guests, plus 4 as writer-producers for Dusty and Liza. There would be more had I allowed album tracks in the 80's! Thanks for listing them! A few of those are before my chart began but I'm pretty certain that It's a Sin, What Have I Done To Deserve This, Always On My Mind and (especially) Left To My Own Devices would have been #1s for me. That would leave their list looking like this for me:

01 It's a Sin
01 What Have I Done To Deserve This
01 Always On My Mind
01 Left To My Own Devices
01 So Hard
01 Can You Forgive Her?
01 Go West
01 I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing
01 I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Anymore
01 I Get Along
01 Minimal
01 Integral

Whilst not up there with your 41, I'd agree they have sustained a particularly high level of quality considering how long they've been around.

Although how did the fabulous Minimal not make #1 for you when the AWFUL Numb did!

Thanks dandy* A good run of number ones there, though I Get Along never really hit me big and So Hard is one of their lesser singles of the period (I'm more fond of earlier tracks that didnt top my chart then these days, like Rent, Love Comes Quickly). Minimal went top 5, but just not quite up there for me. Numb was special, I changed my opinion completely on it from first hearing it to loving the depressing sweeping orchestral vibe - one of the rare non-originals, Diane Warren convinced them to record one of her songs and it was used over the England team's bowing out of the World Cup closing credits along with a montage of players and fans, the effect was amazing. Plus the lyrics meant a lot to me at the time....(sadly!) cry.gif
