17th August 2016

It’s a shocking 4 new entries in the top 4 of my chart! I’m not sure that has ever happened before, but it’s a unique clear-out post-holiday - I played recent faves quite a lot so they were less fresh, and got back from Gran Canaria on Record Store Day which means a bunch of classic oldies released - top of the list: Wichita Lineman, the Jimmy Webb classic song as definitively sung by Glen Campbell. It went top 5 for me in 1969, it was on the first album I had bought for me by my parents in 1970 (and would have charted again if I’d thought of it), it was a reissued oldies chart 1977 topper for me and now it’s out again on vinyl almost 40 years later to mark Glen’s 80th birthday. It’s also regularly named as one of the greatest records of all-time. Because it is!

In at 2, the best track on Super, the Pet Shop Boys new album, Say It To Me, helping to knock their 2 other top 10’s down a bit, while in at 38 another track, Undertow, is dragged in. At 3, it’s a 1990 chart-topper for me, the Trevor Horn-produced flop by Inga Humpe, Riding Into Blue (Cowboy Song), which I’ve stuck into the Buzzjack Song Contest just because it’s sweet and I still love those layered synthy melodic harmonies and the cowboy yeehah's! Finally, at 4, it’s Native American band Redbone back, originally charting in 1974 it topped my chart 2 years ago as featured in Guardians Of The Galaxy - Come And Get Your Love is now backdrop to a show-stopping SKY advert featuring Quicksilver, soon to feature again in the next X-Men film having stolen the previous movie via the Time In A Bottle sequence.

All of Bryan Ferry’s early solo singles are out for Record Store Day, first to chart is his 1974 top 10 cover of The ‘In’ Crowd. Ferry was just awesome back in the early 70’s, both with Roxy Music, and with his solo projects reinventing fave old songs in new exciting sax-heavy ways. This one under-performed in my very hectic Top 30 in 1974, so it’s overdue a proper chart run. Big climbers: AlunaGeorge and Popcaan, into the top 30, while Zayn, sorry ZAYN, finally hits my 40. Buzzjack song Ulay Oh is lovely and in at 32, which leaves new entries for Kungs, Roxette back and charting after 28 years and ongoing, P!NK back and 18 years on, Elle King, Fifth Harmony (at last), with Above And Beyond and Sigala also returning with new tracks. Finally, Amanacer features twice - that’s “dawn” in Spanish, the fab Bomba Estereo song at 20 being not the same as the OTT Spanish Eurovision entry from 2015 from Edurne which is back cos I watched the video on my hols!

Hi Jason, thanks and oops! I put the wrong link in for Glen - thanks for spotting that! AlunaGeorge have had a bit of a struggle upwards but at last they have got there, just like Faded has at loooooong last got UK radio and video airplay and sales on board - been a long slog for the most popular radio record in Europe! yahoo.gif

Zayn I tried so hard not to like it after he was rude to Naughty Boy, but I give up now and just enjoy it laugh.gif

cheers
john
