Ok guys, brainstorm time
How does anyone think the OCC should/probably will change the chart up a little, as it does seem inevitable that something will happen, most probably at the start of next year when Radio 1 see how much the listening figures for the chart have declined. What would be an effective way to change the chart whilst still incoorporating streams? |

I heard an idea a while ago where every new streamer would count as a sale, and then nothing after that? Idk if it would work but it sounds decent

Move the chart back to Sunday's and play the whole top 40 in full. If they don't want to play the top 40 in full, at least play all the new entries in full

Hasn't this been done to death on here now? This. They need to do something but if they move the goalposts on number of streams to sales ratio it will just make a mockery of the charts and all those triple platinum awards that have been dished out (Or silver ones for album tracks that have never troubled the Top 200). I'm sure it'll all right itself in the end - The paid for market is declining quicker than anyone anticipated TBH and once again record companies need to adapt and learn how to market acts in a streaming dominated marketplace! |

* delete all songs that have spent 20 weeks in the top 100 and have not sold enough to make the weekly top 50 from the chart
* delete all album tracks from the chart (have record labels nominate singles) (or we will end up with something ridiculous like 8 Justin Bieber tracks top 20 when he releases his next album) * allow only one streaming equivalent sale per account for each song (though I'm not convinced this would make a lot of difference, how many people listen to songs more than 100 times?) * have a bubbling under top 25 like billboard alongside the new top 100 * count YouTube AUDIO streams (NOT streams of lyric or music videos, just those of just the audio) at a ratio of 1:200 (as YouTube pay out less than actual streaming services) |

To be honest, its the radio stations keeping songs on their playlists too long that causes stagnation in the chart.

They need to stop the 30 second rule too - 30 second streaming of a song counts towards a sale, so if I listen to a song for 33 seconds and skip it then it counts towards a streaming sale. If they are going to allow that they may as well count every time someone listens to a preview of a track on iTunes to be counted too!

Oh yes that too!!!
At least half of the song should be streamed, or 2 minutes of the song is longer than 4 minutes. The 30 second rule opens itself to manipulation and people not intending to listen to the song and only skipping it after 30 seconds. |

We have no idea how much it impacts the charts but I see tweets etc., from Bieber, The Vamps, Joel Adams fans telling others of this rule to get to the 10 plays a day in 5 minutes! |

We have no idea how much it impacts the charts but I see tweets etc., from Bieber, The Vamps, Joel Adams fans telling others of this rule to get to the 10 plays a day in 5 minutes! Yet The Vamps' last single was #10 on sales and #30 overall. These tweets make no difference at all The Tide have been encouraging people to stream their new song but it's not once showed up in the top 200. I don't think the 30 second rule will make any difference, if people want to manipulate the chart, they can contribute no more than 0.7 sales per week so it's hardly a big deal Not sure I like a recurrent rule either, anything being deleted from the chart is just wrong to me no matter how stale it is, it's not fully representative after all. I read an idea from someone on here (can't remember who, apologies!!) of shortening the ratio so streams count for *more*, but allowing it so people can't contribute any more than 1 full sale to a song ever. So if it were 1:10 or something, once you hit 10 streams of a song (ie. 1 sale), no more sales count from that person. That'd make things a lot fresher I think, and more in line with the sales chart! |

VEVO would make the chart even slower I think, the global chart right now has This Is What You Came For at #1, and Justin Bieber's Sorry still as high as #8 (the UK chart may be different but this is an indicator at least)

My suggestion would be to just move on from it. Let the 'Official Chart' go the way of the Singles Sales Chart and become a footnote. Promote a new kind of chart like the US's Bubbling Under chart as THE arbiter of good new music, and play THAT on the radio once a week. That's what people (chart fans anyway) want from the chart - a signpost or exposure to or for great new songs, rather than a record of what people in this country like, which is what the current chart is. I can't think of a way to change the current chart because what it is right now is a pretty locked-down and accurate record of what people are consuming in their droves.
Seems to me that's just not the thing about the chart that chart fans have liked in the past though, so maybe it's just not fit for purpose any more. This post has been edited by 360Jupiter: Aug 30 2016, 07:25 PM |
