Hello Buzzjackers and welcome to the Electronic Dance Number 1's of the 80s.

In this thread we will post a chronological run down of the top songs in the chart that are, or in the early part of the thread contain elements of electronic dance music.

In the 80s dance music moved from disco to synthpop and finally acid house at the end of the decade.

Electronic dance started in the late 1970s as a chart force with tunes such as 'I Feel Love' by Donna Summer, 'Knock on Wood' by Amii Stewart, 'Magic Fly' by Space and 'Number 1 Song In Heaven' by Sparks, but in the 80s electronic dance music took off in the charts.#

At the minute me and awardinary will do the countdown but if anyone else wishes to do too, please pm me.

Now lets get on with the entries dance.gif

how many dance songs actually were there in the 80s?

interested to find out what does well here, my 80s knowledge isn't that great but I do remember some big tunes hitting it toward the end of the decade.

There were lots, if you include the disco with electronic elements and the synthpop ones...

The rules won't be as stringent as the 90s or 00s one.

Oh nice!

Wouldn't it be though better first to finish the 00s and then start this? So we could enjoy longer the dance number 1s kink.gif

Que Sera Mi Vida - Gibson Brothers

Date 20th Jan 1980
2 Weeks
Official Chart Run 34-18-12-5-6-8-8-9-16-23-52 (11 weeks)
(red numbers are dance number 1s for 1980 only)

The Gibson Brothers are a French disco group. The members are originally from Martinique. This track is included on the countdown as it does have a prominent electronic bassline.

The song also has a percussive breakdown, a housey sounding piano and echoed vocals at the start, all very modern sounding.... ohmy.gif

The Gibson Brothers had early hits in the late 70's with Cuba and Oooh What A life, but they were not as electronic as this one, and have a follow up with Mariana, which has a dance remix which I found (I don't know when it was made, I am guessing the late 80s at least if not sooner) but the actual song isn't electronic enough to be included

Yes but we are doing the '10s after the '00s so there will be plenty after it too. Plus we only start to get really dancey in this one by 1985, but I will include the dance influenced ones up to then anyway.

Living By Numbers-New Musik

Date 20th Jan 1980
4 Weeks
Official Chart Run 52-26-20-13-14-22-26-48 (8 weeks)

This is by English synthpop group New Musik, and is a chilled synthpop track with synths and a drum machine, and also contains some jangle pop sounding acoustic guitar.

Sadly this is the only track on the countdown by this band, as they only had two other minor top 40 hits, This World of Water and Sanctuary, the titles of which fit in with this bands liking for enigmatic lyrics. New Musik split in 1982 and founder and main producer Tony Mansfield continued to work as a producer for other acts, most notably during the rest of the 80s, 90s and early 00s.

Que Sera is a great dance track that was ahead of its time, and Living By Numbers is a great chilled synthpop track. Two great starting songs on the countdown I think dance.gif

I particularly like the synths on Living By Numbers...so relaxing dry.gif

I hope that when you get to 1985 “Living On Video” by Trans-X makes it in!

Now on a more serious note and I'm guessing you will hate me again because of that but it's nothing to do with you because I'm really glad that you are so passionate but I would be happier if first you would finish one big project (dance number 1s 00s) and then start another big project in fact because they are similar themes otherwise the interest for both will drop.

Or another possibility, you can continue this list but I will move the thread to the retro forum so there won't be 2 similar themes in one forum wink.gif

Well maybe I will postpone it, and do it after 00s dance number 1s....

I need more people to work on this, as well.....

If you want to postpone it that's okay with me. I wouldn't mind lending a hand in the 00's thread if you ever need a bit of help but no worries if not biggrin.gif

I would prefer it if you would just start it after the 2000s and in this forum wink.gif

You think that would work better than the retro one?

Yes I think it would work in the Chart forum better, there are more members using the Chart Forum than our Retro forum.

so is the decision to postpone? I've got a thread starting in the Pop forum that I've been working on for a while - I'll start that.
