I think they will over compensate this year by giving black actors and actresses more nominations and probably wins,
So more worthy people might lose out. I'm worried that Viola Davis will win every award going just so people can go "Look a black woman can win too". |

From the start, I thought the issue wasn't with the Oscars, but with Hollywood in general for just not being diverse enough with its casting. I don't feel like I've seen much (or any) rise in black roles this year to be honest, at least not in film (TV is another story, which boasts a huge rise in diversity). But I worry the few decent black roles we do get will be forced into every catagory now and some wins could be questionable. Saying that, Viola Davis is an incredible actress, and I haven't seen her work in Fences yet, so it could well be deserved.

Actually that entire post is ridiculous.
How dare they show a little diversity this year and leave out the poor worthy white actors. Like that hasn't been happening in reverse for years. |

But last year, the best performances were nominated and too much of the hate was directed at The Oscars, when nothing else deserved to be there (Jacob Tremblay aside). There just wasn't enough roles there, which, of course there should have been. |

^ Agreed. From the movies that got recognised in the big categories, only Michael B Jordan (Creed) and Samuel L Jackson (The Hateful Eight) are coming to mind and if I was to turf anyone out from the acting categories, it would've been to give Jacob a spot.
I think we've got to keep in mind that some of these movies have been in production since before the #OscarsSoWhite controversy (Loving, A United Kingdom, Moonlight) so it's not like they've come about as a direct result of the controversy. Maybe they could try harder to secure a win or end up with one or two more extra nominations? But those that I've mentioned look like typical Oscars fare and could've ended up with noms either way, I think (if they get noms) it would be unfair to label them as only getting noms due to the controversy. |

I completely agree that should be about the performances (even though we all know a lot of the time it isn't), but the thinking that Viola Davis or a black actor could win because of #OscarsSoWhite is dangerous.

Viola's performance might not be the best though, though it wouldn't surprise me if it was, as I've never seen her put on anything but a class performance. I don't think it's dangerous to assume that the academy are going to be worried about offending people/creating more controversy when making their choices though, last year's headlines will surely be on their minds. |

Viola is a great actress with a strong movie out but so are the likes of Amy Adams and Emma Stone, Who are equally deserving (more so IMO For Amy, she is long overdue) |

Amy is long overdue the Oscar and I'd love to see her get one sometime soon but I think it'll be difficult this year with such a packed category. With Amy having two critically acclaimed movies, I think her votes might be split down the middle seeing as both look equally strong. Even saying that though, neither of her roles seem like the ones the Academy traditionally vote for as winner and it also seems at this early stage that Viola Davis, Natalie Portman and Emma Stone are the three front-runners and the main ones to watch with the likes of Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Ruth Negga, Annette Bening and Emily Blunt fighting for the remaining two spots. In the end, I wouldn't even be so surprised if Amy Adams misses out on a nomination all together, I'm not sure having two good performances in the same year is really going to help her chances either..

I think Arrival seems to be edging ahead in terms of reviews and praise tbh. At least what I have seen. I'm kinda hoping that Matt Damon winning and Sandra Bullock
getting a nod for Sci-fi will help tilt the scales for that kind of movie. Arrival looks like a different kind of Sci Fi movie anyway, it doesn't seem to be about big alien invasions and battles in space etc. |

Yeah, if there is an increase in black/minority roles, we're not really gonna see it until next year at the earliest, and probably more so the year after. I still think they should increase the number of nominees, it seemed to work for Best Picture without making the honor any less valuable, and it's something the academy actually has control of since they can't control the lack of diverse casting. |

There was lots of non-white representation, loads of support for Moonlight and Fences got nods too. Not to mention American Honey and Under the Shadow! People are upset because the leading actor/actress categories are white.
