70. Corpse Bride

226pts (More Top 20's) | 2005 | America/UK
Top 20's: Severin (#3), Iz (#18)

And into 70th we have one of the first stop-motion animations in our list in the form of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, which received a top 3 from Severin and a a top 20 from Iz!

Corpse Bridge is a stop-motion animated musical and is set in a fictional Victorian era with voices from Johnny Depp & Helena Bonham Carter! This is the 3rd stop-motion film produced by Burton and the first directed by him! It was dedicated to executive producer Joe Ranft, who died during production and the film was a critical and box office success and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature but lost to Wallace & Gromit- which also starred Helena Bonham Carter! The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and earned $117.2m worldwide from a $40m budget! London's Moving Picture Company delivered the visual effects and Burton/Depp filmed this and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory around the same time, something I never actually knew or realised!

Was never really a big fan of this when I was younger sad.gif Saw it a couple of times and found it boring every time, maybe I'd think differently now I'm older but I'm not too sure!

The next week or so will be a slow pace but as soon as I hit half term, I promise I am really gonna put everything into this and get as far as possible!

69. Howl's Moving Castle

237pts | 2005 | Japan
Top 20's: Cody (#5)

And into 69th we have our next Studio Ghibli entry in our list in the form of Howl's Moving Castle, which received a top 5 from Cody!

Howl's Moving Castle is a 2004 Japanese animated fantasy film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and is based on the novel by British writer Diana Wynne Jones. The story is set in a fictional kingdom where both magic and early 20th century technology are prevalent, against the backdrop of a war with another kingdom. The film tells the story of a young hatter named Sophie after she is turned into an old woman by a witch's curse. She encounters a wizard named Howl, and gets caught up in his resistance to fighting for the king. The film was influenced by Miyazaki's opposition to the US's invasion of Iraq and the film incorporates themes of pacifism, old age, compassion and anti-war. Miyazaki said he 'had a great deal of rage about the Iraq war' so he felt the film would be poorly received in America. The film also contains a feminist message! Miyazaki stated a few years ago that this was his favourite creation as he wanted to convey the message that life is worth living and the movie is thematically significantly different from the book- the book focuses on class and gender norms, the film on love, personal loyalty and the destructive effects of war. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2004 and was released in Japan in November 2004. It did fantastically at the box office, making $235m worldwide off a $24m budget, though a massive $190m of that worldwide gross came from Japan! It is one of the most financially successful Japanese films in history and was nominated at the Oscars for Best Animated Picture but lost to Wallace & Gromit! The film won many other awards such as four Tokyo Anime Awards and a Nebula Award for Best Script. The film received positive reviews with praise aimed at the visual's and Miyazaki's treatment of the themes. Mamoru Hosoda of Toei Animation was originally selected to direct the film, but quit the project after Studio Ghibli's executives rejected many of his concept ideas. The film was shelved until Miyazaki took over so the project resumed with production in February 2003. It was originally scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2004, and released in the summer of that year, but that didn't happen as you can see above! The film has an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes and appeared on many critics top 10 lists for 2005!

I've had this on DVD and still haven't got round to watching this! Really need to rectify that as it sounds so good!

Also a completely, utterly useless fact for y'all, this & Corpse Bride are next to each other on this list. Howl's Moving Castle was released in cinemas in the UK on the same date Corpse Bride was released in cinemas in the US in the same year!

68. Shrek The Third

240pts | 2007 | America
Top 20's: Cameron (#7)

And into 68th we have the second Shrek film so far to appear in our list in the form of the third movie 'Shrek The Third', which received a top 10 from Cameron!

Shrek the Third is the third installment in the Shrek franchise. It was produced by DreamWorks Animation and is the first in the series to be distributed by Paramount Pictures as they acquired DreamWorks in 2006 The story takes place eight months after the marriage of Shrek and Fiona in the first film. Reluctantly reigning over the kingdom of Far, Far Away, Shrek sets out to find the next heir to the throne—Fiona's cousin Artie, while Prince Charming is plotting to overthrow Shrek and become king. The main cast reprised their voice roles for this sequel and Justin Timberlake also joined the franchise for the third film! The film premiered on May 6, 2007, at the Mann Village Theatre, Westwood in Los Angeles and was released in America exactly 6 years after the first one!! It was the final film in the Shrek franchise to be produced by Pacific Data Images before its closure in 2015 and the film was a massivee box office hit and grossed $799 million on an $160 million budget, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2007. A sequel, titled Shrek Forever After, was released in 2010. Unlike the first two films, the film was not directed by Andrew Adamson due to his occupation with The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (<3). The film was originally planned to be released in November 2006 but was pushed back to May 2007 in December 2004! It was pushed back as 'The sheer magnitude of the Shrek franchise has led us to conclude that a May release date, with a DVD release around the holiday season, will enable us to best maximize performance and increase profitability, thereby generating enhanced asset value and better returns for our shareholders'. Flushed Away took Shrek 3's old spot and the date was changed the day after Pixar bumped Cars up to summer from November 2006! The film received weaker reviews than the previous entries in the franchise with a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but was a massive box office hit, having the biggest opening day and weekend for an animated film at the time of release! It actually held the all time animated weekend record until only last year when Finding Dory opened! ohmy.gif The film earned a massive $800m worldwide and was nominated at Awards such as the BAFTA's for Best Animated Feature. The DVD featured many extras and has made a big sales revenue over the years! The film also had a game released with it and had a large marketing campaign with many tie-ins! Shrek The Halls spin-off picks up from when this left off and the film gained some controversy as un the beginning of the film, in Prince Charming's dinner theater, coconuts are used for horse's hoof beats. This same technique was used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which also starred John Cleese and Eric Idle. Idle claimed to be considering suing the producers of Shrek for the unauthorised use of this gag, while the producers claim they were honouring Idle and Cleese by putting the part in.

I quite enjoy this but it is the weakest of the four Shrek films for me so I'm a bit gutted the 4th one came so close to finishing above this but failed at the last hurdle sad.gif Still a great film though and one that I loved and watched repeatedly when I was younger!

67. Pokemon: The First Movie

243pts | 1998 | Japan
Top 20's: Cody (#7)

And into 67th we have the next Pokemon film to appear in our list in the form of 'Pokemon: The First Movie', which received a top 10 from Cody!

Pokemon: The First Movie is a 1998 Japanese anime film directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, the chief director of the Pokémon television series. It is the first theatrical release in the Pokémon franchise and was released in Japan in 1998 on the 18th July, exactly 2 years before I was born!! ohmy.gif The English-language adaptation, produced by Nintendo and 4Kids Entertainment, was released in North America on November 10, 1999. The film consists of three segments, a 21-minute feature on a mascot, a 10-minute featurette which is a prologue and the main 75 minutes film feature. Although Pokémon was extremely popular when the film was released, the English-language version received negative reviews from film critics. Despite the reviews, it was a box office success worldwide, topping the box office charts in its opening weekend, and eventually grossing $163m worldwide. The film was re-released at Cinemax theatres in America in October 2016 and the soundtrack to the film went top 10 in the US Billboard 200 Charts! The film has been re-mastered in HD and the film received awful reviews with 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst so far I think. ohmy.gif The film was a big success in America earning $50m over its 5 day weekend but fell quickly and finished with an $85m total! It is the highest grossing Anime film in America and was the highest grossing film based on a video game at the time until Lara Croft's Tomb Raider in 2001! The first trailer was released in August 1999 and was shown before The Iron Giant and Mystery Men. The second trailer was released in the fall of 1999 and was attached to The Bachelor. For the film's theatrical release, select theaters would give away exclusive Pokémon trading cards, to capitalize on the success of the trading card game. The cards featured likenesses of Electabuzz, Pikachu, Mewtwo, and Dragonite, and were dispensed in random order for each week it was in that particular theater. The subsequent releases of Pokémon: The Movie 2000 and Pokémon 3: The Movie featured a similar marketing campaign. For the 2000 home video release of The First Movie, a limited edition Mewtwo card (different from that used for the theatrical release) was packaged with the video.

I think this may be the first film on the list that I have/had no interest ever at all to see.

66. Kubo & The Two Strings

246pts | 2016 | America
Top 20's: Josh (#13), Cody (#17)

And into 66th we have one of the best films yet to appear in our list in the form of Laika's 'Kubo & The Two Strings', which received top 20's from Cody and Josh!

Kubo and the Two Strings is a 2016 American 3D stop-motion fantasy action-adventure film directed and co-produced by Travis Knight (in his directorial debut) and includes the voices of Charlize Theron, Art Parkinson, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara, George Takei, and Matthew McConaughey. It is Laika's fourth feature film produced. The film revolves around Kubo, who has magical powers and whose left eye was stolen. Accompanied by Monkey and Beetle, he must subdue the Sisters, Raiden the Moon King and his army of evil spirits. The film premiered at Melbourne International Film Festival in August 2016 and was released to critical acclaim and grossed $75 million worldwide, a good gross but a bit underwhelming considering its $60m budget. The film is nominated for two awards at this years Oscars- Best Animated Film and became only the second animated film to be nominated for Best Visual Effects following The Nightmare Before Christmas! <3 Just before Christmas 2014, Laika announced they had started production on Kubo & Laika's CEO Travis Knight would direct the film! The film has received multiple accolades over this Awards season and is critically acclaimed with a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and their critical consensus sums up the film perfectly, 'Kubo and the Two Strings matches its incredible animation with an absorbing—and bravely melancholy—story that has something to offer audiences of all ages'! You need to check this out immedaitely if you haven't seen it and I may do a filmclub session for it if people want?.

Absolutely adore this film and I am so glad it has already made such a strong impression! The visuals are spectacular, the voice cast are fabulous and the story is heart-warming and terrific. An animation triumph which I really hope will turn into a cult classic in the vain of the likes of 'The Iron Giant'! This made my top 30 on my list and would probably be even higher on my list nowadays if we were to re-do this!

Well I like Pokemon and Shrek as much as the next person, but those respective movies were piss weak and them being above the beauty of Howl's Moving Castle and the twisted genius of Corpse Bride is a bit :/

(OK, I'll give Pokemon the scene with Pikachu crying a major tissue moment, but still, the second movie with the legendary birds>>>>)

That Pokemon movie is the only one I've seen and my god it is far too cheesy to be taken seriously. Got hampered by a family friendly "absolutely all violence is bad.... in a franchise built on competitive animal fighting" message and had pretty bad dialog compared to the TV series.

I finally do have the DVD of Howl though so will be seeing that at some point in the next... whenever we find a moment. And I'm hyped.

I saw the first Pokemon movie appear on Channel 4's Greatest Animated Movies countdown and the fact that it got negative reviews from the likes of Roger Ebert was mentioned in this countdown.
Kubo is one I need to see, because I really enjoyed Laika's other two films Coraline and Paranorman (haven't seen Boxtrolls)
