Dua Lipa drops off #1 this week, conceding the top spot to Chained to the Rhythm; Katy Perry’s comeback track took the silver last week. Big surges this week see Jason Derulo and Nicki Minaj’s Swalla (fairly predictably) and Una Healy’s Battlelines (fairly out of the blue, as an album track from an ex-member of a band I wasn’t even a fan of…don’t shoot me, BuzzJack) complete the top 5, alongside Bear’s Den’s Greenwoods Bethlehem which holds over from last week. Lana Del Rey, Bebe Rexha, Amy Lee and Shaggy also enter the top 10 this week following a week in which I played a lot more music than usual – I’ve had a lot of reading to do, and that’s easier with a soundtrack!

Brand new entries are a little thin on the ground this week, highest going, for the third week running to a rock song, as Biffy Clyro’s Flammable debuts just inside the top 20. Calvin Harris’ Slide, Kato and Hailee Steinfeld’s track and Chainsmokers’ Something Just Like This also enter this week, along with more niche new tracks from Busy P, Prides, MK, Charming Horses and Matthew Koma.

Without further ado, here’s the list this week: the top 40 up to the first week of Mar. 2017:

A few shifts this week at either end shake up the chart a little. Katy lands her most significant chart hit for me since Dark Horse, not including the resurgences Waking Up in Vegas and TGIF have had in how much I like them in the intervening three year gap. Katy and I have mixed history, so this is a welcome return to form for her in my books.

This week’s chart is pretty firmly split between rockier indie and dance, with a few pop tracks (Ed, Little Mix, Katy) also popping their heads in. Between Biffy, Prides, Jamiroquai, Texas, Una Healy, Deaf Havana, Cold War Kids, Busted, Bastille, Bear's Den, Amy Lee, Goldfrapp, Nelly Furtado’s punk funk Cold Hard Truth and Coldplay’s turn on Something Just Like This, this week’s chart has a much higher than usual 14 tracks from the rockier side of the spectrum. Perhaps an omen for how my taste will evolve this year, or for what new music might be to come?

As for this week's new entries...

First up, the second charting track from the Scots alt-rockers’ most recent album Ellipsis, which has proved to be a slow burner following its release last July. Previous single Medicine appealed to my liking of rock ballads and slower moments, while this one benefits from my general sound shift back in a more alt, rockier direction from indietronica and EDM. It follows recent new entries from Deaf Havana and Cold War Kids in about the same genre. Biffy’s chart record is mixed, being a band I’ve liked for at least ten years, but in doing so, not really falling much into the period I actually tracked my own charts. Their previous highest? Singles Opposite and Black Chandelier, and album track The Thaw from 2013 album Opposites. They hold up well, so are worth checking out if you’re a new fan.

Calvin’s third (or fourth, if you count the decidedly hype-free Hype!) ‘returning’ single in between albums, following the decent This Is What You Came For and the underwhelming My Way, manages a top 20 debut this week – just. It’s an interesting track, taking influence from funk and a bit of slower disco as well, while managing to translate Frank Ocean’s signature smooth sound from his familiar R&B to an EDM context. Calvin’s influence in pop these days is about what Mark Ronson had this time ten years ago, so I’d not be surprised to see some sound-alikes releasing in the following months. I wasn’t 100% on this at first but it might end up being a slow burner. Taking the Drake-style path, it’s not on youtube yet. Unfortunately it might crash out of the official chart this week following Ed-pocalypse.

A surprisingly good track going for the popular EDM-pop crossover sound in vogue right now, while featuring some decidedly B-list names.

This is very funky; Netsky meets The Knocks meets Pharrell. Its both acts’ first charter for me and also has shades of Daft Punk, both older and new.

A slightly older one from MK that I downloaded a while ago and didn’t quite get into at the time. It’s very 90s, but missed the boat with its release being a bit ahead of the time that we all got back into 90s mania, in terms of music and fashion. MK should definitely consider re-relasing it off the back of recent successful remixes and his track with Becky Hill. It also reminds me of another great retro 90s inspired EDM track from quite a few years ago now that should be shared on; Fever by B Traits and Elisabeth Troy, from 2012. Enjoy, 90s fans.

This is a pretty appropriate place to note Coldplay’s evolution. It’s interesting how they’ve largely managed to dodge criticism of debuting as a pure indie/alt-rock band, and transitioning slowly, bit by bit, all the way to one shade off pure pop – while somehow managing to retain their indie/rock status. It used to be very uncool to like Coldplay and they’ve somehow managed to shake that off too in the last couple years. Hats off to them.

The Scottish indie group’s most recent release becomes only their most recent charter for me, following nearly everything else they’ve put out. Not bad for a group I was hot and cold on when I first came across them.

The EDM vocalist strikes out solo on this one with wry and knowing nods to his roots in the track’s self-aware lyrics. He’s charted before for me on Find You with Zedd and Miriam Bryant.

Another slightly older one – thanks Spotify. Its from 2015 but fits in pretty well with 2017’s sound, having a sound of Gryffin, JP Cooper, and the like to it. It’s also pretty reminiscent of Are You With Me, the big summer hit from afew years back.

And that’s the week! Thank you to everyone that's commented so far and had thoughts! I genuinely really enjoy hearing them. Please feel free to chime in with your thoughts on any of this week's entries or new entries you like, readers! smile.gif

Thanks for your thoughts! Isn't the Busted album great? Coldsmokers is slowly growing on me too.

I think Automaton charted briefly or might've just been in my wider top 100 for a bit. I wasn't a huge fan of it.

Definitely give the Bebe track a go, I would say! Also this is the Rihanna x Addal track; its a remix of the bonus track from her Anti album. The original was a minor US hit. The remix EP's on Spotify if you're interested wink.gif
