Great. That deadwood from Chainsmokers has climbed back in. I was hoping we would see the last of that crap. On the other hand, we could be getting a new #1 next week

I can't work this out either. Beyond the popular picks, the chart ranking largely flows in tracklist order, yet Eraser is down there with the bonus tracks. I've just come to the conclusion that people don't like pure rap Ed as much as his other guises.

This is my favourite thing to observe when big albums come out on Spotify, to see which tracks make the quick early impression (usually just initially resembling the tracklist order) and then how it develops over time.

It's also interesting to see SUCH a disparity with Eraser. I remember when Justin Bieber's Purpose came out, the opening track was almost an interlude, which Spotify listeners tend to skip, but being track 1 it was one of the most streamed tracks on the album that wasn't a single. If Eraser is really this unpopular, you have to wonder if there are many people who quickly sampled it and deduced that the album is not for them, Ed might be doing even better if track 1 was a 'safer' choice laugh.gif

The next non Ed number 1 will probably be Clean Bandit ft. Zara Larsson - Symphonies...I think it could debut at number 1, although I am not sure....

I think opening with Eraser was Ed's only mis-step of this era, surely one of the two lead singles would have set the album up better than a track that a lot of listeners are not going to 'get'.

On another note, it's a shame that the last No.1 single by an act that hadn't previously had significant (or any) chart success before was Lukas Graham over a year ago. Record companies must be having a horrendous time trying to break new acts at the moment, streaming so hugely favours artists over songs. Of course well known acts have always done well in the UK charts due to fanbase buys and loyalty - or just a consistently high quality output - but we used to have just as many unknown acts breaking through due solely to the quality of the song. We hardly ever see previous unknowns with brilliant songs at the top anymore.

The stream totals are all staying eerily static for Ed's album, you'd think first day would be WAY higher because a lot of casual fans listened to it on the first day. Interesting that they've held up so extremely well.

I reckon they'll start to slide a bit tomorrow and The Chainsmokers will break his monopoly. Once the weekend arrives, the one week grace period will end and the album will get reduced promotion so they'll drop at a reasonable rate...unless the success of this week causes publicity to propel him further tongue.gif

To be fair, Ed is getting the numbers all other tracks should be showing. It's bizarre that tracks by other acts can't break 500k on Spotify in a country of 63 million

Well it's not like all 63 million have Spotify. There are probably about 5 million UK users
