This really is the era of the banal - where's the trailblazers, the renegades? (Thankgod for Stormzy). Please give me anything other than MOR and formulaic R&B.

At a guess, Jessie J?

Congratulations! cheer.gif

Her 'Who You Are' sold 105,859 behind Adele's mighty '21' on 12/3/11

In fairness to Jessie J she has been unlucky not to get a number 1 Album.
She must be due a return this year given last Album was out in 2014.

I'm not sure unfaithful is the word you're looking for. Jessie J isn't the first artist to have a good first era but struggle to follow it up. Examples of this are Duffy, James Blunt and Emeli Sande.

If she puts out a single that catches on like Price Tag did, then she's got a shot with a new album.

She did put out a single that caught on though, surely Bang Bang comes under that category. It was hardly a flop

From those listed i would say James Blunt to a lesser extent, his follow up sold over 800,000 and he went on to achieve further platinum selling albums. I know it was a big drop from the 3 million sales of his debut, but the other artists listed especially Duffy had an awful second era. Jessie J i believe partly suffered as people did not like her personality, this was mixed with music that was not as popular as that from her first era.

I really thought Take That would struggle to touch 50k opening this time, there's been literally zero hype or noticeable anticipation for it.

Their fanbase must be ultra dedicated.

Their sales this week suggest it is gone a little bit beyond just 'fanbase buys' but yeah your point is correct!

A Take That Album ("Progress") sold as many as 2.4 million as recently as 2010/2011, they had a huge 'fanbase', let's not pretend a lot of their sales this week are from casual buyers.
If that is the case then more of their 'fanbase' has deserted them with "III" and "Wonderland" than we first thought.

Jessie J never having a no.1 album is a blessing.

Poor old Duffy tho. Artists would kill for Endlessly's sales these days. Still love that album.

With the crazyworld we live in right you'd think musicians would be getting a lot more political, instead of Ed Sheeran's MOR stuff

There are musicians who are political , they just happen to not be mainstream artists

Seeing as politics is a very divisive subject and controversial it comes as no surprise that people like Ed aren't doing political songs. The only one recently has been Katy Perry and that barely qualifies as one.

Ellie doesn't strike me as the type to get political, but I don't follow her on social so what do I know

Certainly a lot of their fanbase deserted them between Progress and III (Robbie and Jason leaving + tax scandal effect?), but it doesn't look like many more have disappeared between III and Wonderland. Even with the promo they've done, before this week I was struggling to envisage them selling over 70k in week one.

To go from a 518k first week to 145k in one fell swoop, you'd have sort of expected the rapid drop-off to continue down the line. Maybe not as steep as that but I certainly didn't expect to see them coming in at 115k, which is what they will likely achieve!
