A total of 8 eligible UK #1 singles were overlooked, and these were Five & Queen We Will Rock You, Madonna Music, A1 Take On Me, Mariah Carey & Westlife Against All Odds, All Saints Black Coffee, Spice Girls Let Love Lead The Way, Westlife My Love and A1 Same Old Brand New You. Joining them on the omissions list were also Sugababes' debut single Overload, the #2 hit from Bomfunk MC's Freestyler, a #2 hit One More Time from French producers Daft Punk, Something Deep Inside from Billie Piper, P!nk Most Girls, Janet Jackson Doesn't Really Matter and others. This volume marked the only one in the series to feature Vanessa Amorosi, True Steppers, Delerium, Zombie Nation, Storm, Aurora*, SuReal, Azzido Da Bass and B Boyz. *Another artist with the same name makes an appearance later in the series. Artwork Rating: 8/10 Extremely Good It might not seem like much but I love all the cogs and blocks. Something original and untried in the past. The limited use of colours (whites, greys, reds and greens) really works well for me, and it looks great as a piece of artwork from the series. Disc 1 Favourite: Bon Jovi It's My Life A great rock song from 2000. Bon Jovi proves on this track they were still capable of producing a chart-worthy rock anthem. I used to sing along to this when it was out. Still love playing it on occasion to this day. Disc 2 Favourite: Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan Silence This trance gem has received literally hundreds of plays in my lifetime. It's just so iconic and there's several remixes around which I've heard which makes this sound like a great atmospheric song. I do feel however there are a lot of losses too in missing hits. I think this is an indication of the high volume of music which impacted the charts in that year, with a new #1 single almost every week. The biggest mistake for me, and I would in fact go as far as calling it the epic fail of the series, was using an unofficial version of the #2 smash hit Who Let The Dogs Out and not featuring Baha Men. This is a great Now. I could have picked several winners on each disc, but I went with Pure Shores and I Turn To You. Both classics. Missing out were Trouble, Babylon, Rock DJ, Can't Fight The Moonlight, Sky and On A Night Like This.

Once again I far prefer Disc 2 to Disc 1. I opted for Pure Shores on Disc 1 and Absolutely Everybody on Disc 2 (my favourite song of 2000!)
I'd rate all of the following 9/10 or higher: 4. Texas In Demand 4:00 {6} 8. All Saints Pure Shores 4:20 {1} 14. LeAnn Rimes Can't Fight The Moonlight 3:32 {1} 15. S Club 7 Natural 3:40 {3} 21. Martine McCutcheon I'm Over You 3:41 {2} 22. Kylie Minogue On A Night Like This 3:31 {2} 23. Steps Stomp 3:17 {1} 24. Vanessa Amorosi Absolutely Everybody 3:41 {7}27. Melanie C I Turn To You 4:10 {1} 28. Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan Silence 3:48 {3} 30. Zombie Nation Kernkraft 400 3:28 {2} 32. Darude Feel The Beat 3:15 {5} 33. Aurora feat. Madison Avenue Who The Hell Are You 3:28 {10} But yes, so many songs missing from this considering some of the songs at the end of Disc 2 that could have easily been cut. Knowing about record label politics at the time most of the omissions aren't too surprising but I would have expected to see Freestyler, One More Time on here at the very least - amazed that the former didn't make it, seeing as it was on the Now Dance equivalent out at the time. |

If i recall correctly they didn't use Los Del Rio's version of Macarena in 1996 and used some lower charting alternate version

The second year running I got a Now for Christmas! As with Now 44, a lot of held back 'big singles' from earlier in the year on this volume, but for some reason this always felt like it was slower to get into compared with the Britney-Shania-Lou Bega-Eiffel 65-Steps-Geri smash-a-thon that opened Now 44. Having U2 so high up on Disc 1 was always a curious choice in my opinion. Maybe I just didn't get the sudden fascination with them at that period in their career (I was 11 at the time, admittedly). Anyway. A strong winter volume. My top 5 from each:
CD1 1. All Saints (along with Never Ever and Black Coffee, the high watermark of their career. Shame that the initial run of their success ended on All Hooked Up. I'm relieved that one never made it to a Now) 2. Coldplay (Timeless and beautiful. The piano in this gets me everytime, it's so haunting) 3. David Gray (I will sound like a total charlatan here, as I know purists of his work despise it but I much preferred the radio mix featured on this Now that made this single a hit. Just sounds so much beefier. Again high watermark of his career) 4. Britney Spears (I never understood why 'Lucky' got a bad rep. Easily amongst the top 5 from the early Max Martin era of her career) 5. Craig David (more so in light of his Glastonbury performance at the weekend, this has aged so much better than you'd imagine it had. Classic R&B slow jam!) CD2 1. Louise (This single and the one before it on Now 46, '2 Faced', were among my personal top 40 of the year. Loved the Wu Tang Clan sample and the overall theme of the song and its lyrics.) 2. Gabrielle (I don't know what it was about Gabrielle in the early 00s but all the singles from the 'Rise' period of her career were perfect. So understated and beautiful) 3. Billie Piper (her final single before Chris Evans filled up a Ferrari with red roses and drunken marriages ensued. But what a single to bow out on. Quite Natalie Imbruglia-esque, which is probably why I love it so much. I could've seen her continuing down this route musically had she stayed in pop) 4. Aurora/Naimee Coleman (loved this trance cover of Duran Duran. It kept the same wistfulness the original had. Sasha Collison who was one half of Aurora went on to write for Xenomania) 5. True Steppers, Dane Bowers and Victoria Beckham (so utterly bombastic and OTT, but precisely why I love it. 'This tune's gonna punish you!') |

I preferred 'Smooth' that Santana did with Rob Thomas much more! But yes that's of course quite high profile at the moment on the DJ Khaled track. |

Lmao at NOW! not getting the rights to the actual version of Who Let The Dogs Out and using a cover version.
 Anyway, my faves: Disc One: Modjo - Lady (Hear Me Tonight) (beautiful laidback funky house tune, a dance classic by any definition) Disc Two: Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan - Silence (absolutely love this, one of the most recognisable trance classics and it builds so well) Other favourites: Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 (what a time for trance music) Storm - Time To Burn (likewise) and my favourite non-dance records: Robbie Williams - Rock DJ (fun song) All Saints - Pure Shores (lush production) and from the bonus disc: Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler Daft Punk - One More Time (had a go of making a Spotify playlist of this too, let me know if that's something people are interested in.) |

I see there's confusion about the Bob Sinclar/Spacedust thing. Put simply..
- Bob Sinclar makes 'Gymtonic' with uncredited co-production from Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk. - The sample doesn't get cleared so it never gets released as a single (though it is now available to download and stream). - Spacedust make a soundalike version "Gym & Tonic" and get to #1 with it. Spacedust are not to be confused with Stardust (the group involving Thomas Bangalter who had "Music Sounds Better With You"). |

I also recall they (understandably considering the lyrical content) put a remix of Khia's 'My Neck, My Back' on a NOW disc. Mostly because I grew up loving that remix and got quite the shock when I realised what the actual version was.
Oh and also they put the original version of K'naan's 'Wavin Flag' on even though it was the remix that got popular. |

I've been unable to find the hit remix of that on any compilation, it was the same remix on lots of European compilations, like Germany's Bravo Hits. Very bizarre and annoying. Oh and of course, the original version of N-Trance's Set You Free popped up again on Now 50 when it should have been the Rob Searle remix, which is what turned it into a hit for a second time. IIRC, that remix featured on Now Dance 2002, which was released around the same time, so they definitely had the rights to it and were aware it was the remix that was the hit. |
