    Andrew's Review
Now That's What I Call Music! 49 otherwise known as Now 49 tells the story of Summer 2001. With 41 Top 40 tracks and 8 UK #1 singles, it certainly delivered on it's promise of bringing us great music. Now 49 was the first volume in the series to feature Blue, Wheatus, Outkast, Destiny's Child, Mis-Teeq and Eve.

Just two #1 singles were missed off the tracklist which were 3 week chart topper Shaggy feat. Rayvon – Angel and Moulin Rouge supergroup Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & P!nk – Lady Marmalade. Some other notable omissions included the debut from US boy band O-Town – Liquid Dreams, the Pearl Harbour soundtrack single There You'll Be by Faith Hill, Jennifer Lopez – Play and Faithless – We Come 1, all of which charted at #3. Many other Top 10 hits were also missed.

As always this volume has one hit wonders which never featured again in the series. On this occasion these were Marti Pellow, Dido, Zero 7, DJ Pied Piper & The Masters of Ceremonies, Roger Sanchez, Da Hool, Ian van Dahl, A*Teens, Bellefire, Boris Dlugosch and Aaron Soul.

Artwork Rating: 8/10 Extremely Good
When it comes to mixing colours, I love the ones used on this cover. The gorgeous reds, yellows, oranges and golds. Floating on what could be volcanic lava, the logo is clean and bright and as always sparkling. Very very good.

Disc 1 Favourite: Zero 7 – Destiny
Such a beautiful piece of music this. It's such a calming summery melody. Featuring uncredited vocals from Sia, this song goes down as a personal favourite chillout song. Disappointing that it only achieved a #30 peak.

Disc 2 Favourite: Gorillaz – 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)
Quite a few favourites on this disc, but I've gone for Gorillaz as this is a feel good anthem. I loved their sound in the early to mid 2000's and this most certainly is one of their better hits.

Disc 3 Tracklist:
(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Shaggy feat. Rayvon – Angel 3:55 {1}
2. Brandy & Ray J – Another Day In Paradise 4:32 {5}
3. Usher – U Remind Me 4:07 {3}
4. 3LW – No More (Baby I'ma Do Right) 3:58 {6}
5. Mya – Free 5:23 {11}
6. Spooks – Karma Hotel 3:49 {15}
7. M.O.P. – Cold As Ice 3:58 {4}
8. Sticky feat. Ms Dynamite – Booo! 3:38 {12}
9. Missy Elliott – Get Ur Freak On 3:29 {4}
10. Backyard Dog – Baddest Ruffest 3:43 {15}
11. Fatboy Slim – Star 69 3:33 {10}
12. Faithless – We Come 1 3:42 {3}
13. Steps – You'll Be Sorry 4:05 {4}
14. Jennifer Lopez – Play 3:17 {3}
15. *NSync – Pop 2:56 {9}
16. O-Town – Liquid Dreams 3:24 {3}
17. Dane Bowers – Another Lover 3:10 {9}
18. R.E.M. – Imitation Of Life 3:57 {6}
19. Robbie Williams – The Road To Mandalay 3:16 {1}
20. Faith Hill – There You'll Be 3:40 {3}
21. Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & P!nk – Lady Marmalade 4:24 {1}
----------
Total time: 1:59:58

Overall Rating: 7/10 Very Good
It was great to see so many well established artists make their debut mark on this volume. Lots of hits from soundtracks featuring too. I love the first half of Disc 2. I'm quite disappointed Shaggy was missed due to seeing him on only the previous volume with another smash hit. The exclusion of Lady Marmalade is another reason my rating isn't higher. But overall still good.

Andrew's Best 5 (as of July 2017)
1. Zero 7 – Destiny
2. Gorillaz – 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)
3. Roger Sanchez – Another Chance
4. Ian van Dahl – Castles In The Sky
5. S Club 7 – Don't Stop Movin'

Andrew's Worst 5 (as of July 2017)
1. Boris Dlugosch feat. Roisin – Never Enough
2. Dido – Thank You
3. Damage – So What If I
4. Blink 182 – The Rock Show
5. Melanie B – Lullaby

Of all the 2001 volumes, this is probably the cream of the crop. Many of my favourite singles of this year were on this Now too which always helps! Top 5 favourites from each:

CD1
1. S Club 7 (quite simply a pop classic and the high watermark of their career. Was so happy when this went to #1 for them and also when it won the Brits and Record of the Year)
2. Blue (I loved Blue - still do in fact - and really loved 'All Rise' when it came out. Shame they weren't on more volumes but that's a matter for another week)
3. Robbie Williams (one of my all time favourite Robbie songs this. His vocal on it is one of the best of his career and I love the slight wistfulness in this with the guitar riffs when they all go sad and heartstring pulling)
4. Gabrielle (easily the best song off the first Bridget Jones soundtrack. You listen to this song and it's one of those where everyone who listens to it will have felt that way or been hurt the way she sings about being heartbroken in the song)
5. Zero 7 (aka the first - albeit uncredited - appearance for Sia on a Now album! Such a gorgeous track this, one of my go to songs when I want to chill out)

CD2
1. DJ Pied Piper (OH AIYA NAPA, AIYA NAPA, AIYA NAPA SCHPILLLL! Nuff said)
2. Mis-Teeq (Alesha's MCing on this is fierce. Should've been a number one)
3. Eddy Grant (I loved the remix of this. I remember him performing it on CD:UK bizarrely enough!)
4. Gorrilaz (another flawless Gorrilaz single. The Soulchild mix got more spins than the original from me mind)
5. Basement Jaxx (they always had great singles but I particularly loved this one, and the whole Bollywood feel of the video. Uncredited vocal appearance by Now 41 star Kele Le Roc on this one too)

Spot on Disc 3 choices, awardinary. As you say lots of top 10s missed out on for this volume. Some others I'd have plumped for inclusion:

- A1 - No More
- Sugababes - Run for Cover
- Allstars - Best Friends
- Stephen Gately - Stay
- Sunshine Anderson - Heard It All Before
- BBMak - Still On Your Side
- Madonna - What It Feels Like for a Girl

I really love this edition and often go back to it, though I need to replace my copy as Disc 2 skips towards the end.

I think they did a good job with the tracklist, I'm not sure why Angel never made it when It Wasn't Me was on the previous edition. Lady Marmalade would have just been down to licensing issues I guess.

I voted for Eternal Flame (just LOVED their cover of it) with Destiny a very close second <3 How on earth did that track do so badly in the chart? I'm glad it was still deemed good enough for inclusion on here though. Disc 2 has so many I love but I went for Castles In The Sky, a true classic. You Are Alive is amazing too, and that Bellefire song deserved to be a much bigger hit, such a great, breezy chorus.

Voted for Ms Jackson on Disc 1 and You Are Alive on Disc 2 as my faves. Ms Jackson is definitely my favourite Outkast track, great fun track, I remember the chorus when I was younger, probably because the headmistress in my school at the time was called Ms Jackson! I liked the chorus of the song especially back then.

You Are Alive I remember so well from the time (one of the few dance songs I do from that year), was on music channels a lot. Really liked it back then, thought is a very good song, I thought the singer sounded like Geri Halliwell or maybe was her back then which probably added to the appeal as I usually liked pop music back then much more than dance. The summery music video is great too for it, set in the tropics judging by the coconuts. May as well post the video as it is easily my favourite song on the Now 49 album.

Artwork isn't great on Now 49 - so boring so I selected 4/10 for that. Musically for the album I selected the 7/10 category

Also just briefly awardinary - S Club 7 had two weeks at number one with 'Don't Stop Movin' (albeit on aggregate, with Geri being at the top for the two weeks between).

Right prepare for a long(ish) post as this is my favourite Now! album.

The music from this album covered summer 2001, which was a great period of my life. I had come out to myself the year before, and went to London in the summer to meet a great guy. We sat in the sun (it was a long hot summer) and the music here takes me right back every time. Big Brother 2 was on, which I look back on fondly, and basically this represents a fantastic long summer for me.

Anyway, I have multiple favourites from each disc, but broadly in a top 5 or so from each one:

Disc 1
1. Hearsay - Show Me The Way To Your Love
2. Zero 7 - Destiny
3. S Club 7 - Don't Stop Movin'
4. Radiohead - Pyramid Song
5. Robbie Williams - Eternity

Disc 2
1. Roger Sanchez - Another Chance
2. Gorillaz - 19/2000 (Soulchild Remix)
3. Basement Jaxx - Romeo
4. Fragma - You Are Alive
5. Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky

FANTASTIC dance tracks on Disc 2. This really is head and shoulders imo above every other Now album.

Just like Jester, this is also my favourite Now! album of all-time as well wub.gif My disc 1 favourite is 'Don't Stop Movin' by S Club 7, which is a total guilty pleasure and exactly how cheesy fun pop should be done. It doesn't even feel like full-out cheese like some of the rest of their repertoire, largely helped by the rather credible production values I think. Then disc 2 is just everything, it houses my favourite song of all-time - 'Another Chance' by Roger Sanchez wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif It takes the Toto sample and improves it tenfold by evoking so much emotion in me. It's weird that a looped dance track has such an effect but it just strikes the perfect balance of happy and sad. The accompanying video is always an emotional watch as well! Some other brilliant dance offerings on that disc as well such as 'Castles In The Sky' and 'Romeo' heart.gif

used to like the Wheatus song, until at the 2015 works Christmas Party somebody played it on the jukebox.

Best song from this is maybe Pyramid Song.

Zero 7 – Destiny is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Shame 'In The Waiting Line' didn't make it onto NOW 50.
