After the massive success of Despacito, it can only beg the question - will there be more Latino hits in the UK?

I feasibly think Mi Gente by J Balvin could make the top 40 in the UK, it's not doing too badly on sales or streams at the moment and with some playlist support it could do very well. Also, the Sean Paul remix of SUBEME LA RADIO by Enrique Iglesias seems accessible enough to take off.

So what do you think, will we see more Spanish songs in the chart, or will Despacito be a one off before Daddy Yankee comes back in 2027? heehee.gif

Subeme La Radio and Mi Gente sound like big hits, just a matter of whether radio will back them.

I think the main problem is the traditional unwillingness of R1 to play songs in Spanish,
even with Despacito, it's only been B-listed despite reaching #1

The difficulty we have is that unlike say, the US, we don't have a sizeable Spanish-speaking minorty population, so selling radio on them would be tough. I don't believe non-Bieber Despacito has been playlisted anywhere?

However if more Latin artists went for Spanglish remix versions of their hits I could see that working.

I wouldn't be surprised is the likes of Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato or someone like The Weeknd have been approached to give credited vocals to Spanish songs just to help get them mainstream attention. That's really what it would take for radio to sit up and pay attention, they will only do so if a "big name" like Bieber gets involved. Sad really.

If they are sung by big English speaking artists then yes, otherwise no.

It's such a shame stuff like Chantaje as well as Sofia by Alvaro Soler got paid dust but the second Bieber uttters some mangled Spanish it's #1. I don't thik actual Spanish language hits will become a thing unless they similarly get big artists on them, the sound will probably be a bit more prominent though like in Wild Thoughts.

I think we'll see it more often now, but not all the time. It'll have to be something really special, or have a featured artist. You can't give JB all the credit for Despacito's success - it's clearly genuinely popular in its own right.

!!! It's offensive tbh... these songs would be successful here if given the chance. I'm here for the Latin revival though, I hope this becomes more of a trend.

Absolutely. Don't forget as well, light years before Luis Fonsi's recent hit, Daddy Yankee had a top 5 hit of his own in 2005 with 'Gasolina'. Then of course we had the explosion of big Latino influenced tracks in the summer of 1999 - Ricky Martin, Enrique, Lou Bega etc. It's just all about the right moment and the right song.

'Mi Gente' is climbing the UK Spotify chart very quickly (up to #67 today and it entered the top 100 a few days ago), so clearly there's a demand for more reggaeton in the charts. I imagine it'd have to get an English version or a Justin Bieber or Drake remix to actually go anywhere other than being a minor Spotify hit in the UK though.

I'm just hoping it gets top 5 support on Today's Top Hits and a decent Summer Hits UK placing, as I can't see it getting a Hot Hits UK add unless it get s a remix unfortunately.

I'm all for Latin songs in the UK Charts.

Would love to see "Caecilius est in Horto" becoming the hit that it deserves.

Hi,

I´ve been in Radio in Latin America for more than 20 Years and many of your opinins here are right, Despacito Original is a huge hit here in Latin America, but with Justin Bieber Remix have a worldwide success, like Los Del Rio make in 1996 with the Bayside Boys Remix, Spanglish remix help those song to reach other markets. 1999 Latin Explosion? was just limited to Latin acts singing in English like Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. Despacito have more credits to a Latin Hit because is lyrics is most in Spanish.
Cheers!!!
