Christina Aguilera's Official Top 20 biggest songs
04 May 2018 | By Rob Copsey

With Christina's new album Liberation out this summer, Official Charts reveals the sales of her Top 20 biggest singles.

Christina Aguilera has made it indubitably clear over the years that she won't be rushed to put out a new record. But six years after her last album, Lotus, fans were so desperate for new music that they made video montages that poked fun at her endless teasing and drip-feeding of details, which ultimately revealed nothing.

But none of that matters now because she's back, armed with her new single Accelerate, which is out now, and album Liberation, which follows on June 15. It's Christina's eighth record, factoring in her Christmas album and Spanish language record Mi Reflejo.

While we wait for the album, we look at the songs that got her here - an impressive lineup of 23 Top 40 hits, of which 17 went Top 10 and four made it all the way to Number 1. Check out Christina's Official Chart history in all its glory here. Before we reveal the full Top 20, some highlights:

Genie in a Bottle
Every pop superstar's career has to start somewhere and Christina's kickoff was better than most. A genuine phenomenon when released in 1999, demand was so high that the US import charted the week before its official UK release. Shifting 172,000 copies in that first seven days on sale, Genie in a Bottle spent two weeks at Number 1. It lands as her third biggest song with 716,000 copies sold, and 10.6 million streams.

Lady Marmalade
Collaborating has been key to Christina's success over the years, and some of her most enduring hits have been her team-ups with other huge artists. 2001's Lady Marmalade was a real turning point for Christina – while she'd been spotted out and about sporting a more outré look, this was the first time we'd seen Christina fully expressing herself and letting out her wild side. With Lil Kim, Pink and Mya on board, this was a guaranteed hit – another Number 1. On her rundown, it clocks in as her fourth biggest song overall, combining sales of 588,000 and 17.1m.

Dirrty
If Lady Marmalade was the starter, Dirrty was the main. Christina was pulling no punches – indeed, the video was set at a very rough boxing match – on this fantastically gritty Number 1 from 2002. The lead from her huge-selling sophomore album Stripped, Dirrty spent two weeks rubbing itself up against the Number 1 spot, and has scored 399,000 sales and 12.3m streams to land in Christina's all-time Top 5. Despite its success across Europe, Dirrty struggled in the US and stalled at Number 48, mainly due to lack of radio play which counts towards the Billboard Hot 100.

Beautiful
Christina's most recent Number 1, this classic "look hun, you're actually a really great person so who cares what people think" ballad knocked Tatu's All The Things She Said off the top in 2003 (Take a look at the chart the week Beautiful went to Number 1 – it's a corker). It's sold 381,000 copies and racked up 11.8m streams since we started counting in 2014. It's legacy is the countless 'be yourself' torch songs that have dominated the charts ever since.

Moves Like Jagger
Now, a big one. Christina hadn't been in the Top 10 for a while when this insanely catchy track from a revitalised Maroon 5 came along in 2011. Christina's scene-stealing cameo helped Moves Like Jagger to million-selling status – but it couldn't lift it to Number 1. Yep, Moves Like Jagger spent an agonising SEVEN weeks at 2, beaten to the top by six different songs, including Example, Rihanna FT Calvin Harris, Pixie Lott and One Direction.

In fact, Moves Like Jagger is the second bestselling single in the history of the Official Singles Chart not to get to Number 1, beaten (again) by Wham’s Last Christmas. It was the second biggest selling single of 2011, behind Adele's Someone Like You, and is Christina's biggest song in the UK – 1.54 million sales and 26 million streams. However… while it is her top seller, it isn't her most streamed track. See where Moves Like Jagger ranks in the UK's best-selling singles of all time.

Say Something
Another memorable feature from Christina, this song became a hit after our leading lady spotted it on So You Think You Can Dance – we can just imagine Christina settling down to watch this at home, shouting out NO whenever someone attempted the moves from Dirrty – and was anxious to collaborate with A Great Big World on a new version. The Christina-enhanced song reached Number 4 in 2014 and sold 443,000 copies. It's Christina's most streamed track in the UK, notching up 45 million plays, helping it to finish second in her all-time Top 20. It's also her most recent Top 40 hit – but we reckon that will change pretty soon…

Eagle-eyed Xtina fans may notice a few Top 40 hits missing from her all-time Top 20. Just below is Your Body, her lead single from Lotus, while 2008's greatest hits header Keeps Gettin' Better and 2010's Not Myself Tonight follow just behind.

Some surprises here!

I expected The Voice Within to be higher it’s often used on BGT / X Factor.

Also Candyman being the biggest selling Back to Basics track despite being the lowest peaking is always strange to see.

I Turn To You forever being underrated as is Your Body.

Beautiful should pass 500K this year so so so close.

Hopefully stripped the album will pass 2m soon too.

Incredible artist for me though very underrated. A versatile queen heart.gif

Something's gone wrong with sales for 'Lady Marmalade'. Last year it has sold 676k pure sales and this year it's only on 588k - either this year is meant to be 688k or last year was meant to be 576k.

Interesting to see all three Back To Basics hits back-to-back-to-back on this list! All close together in sales despite three very different chart peaks. I wonder how long 'Candyman' has been the highest-seller of the three, that's very unexpected. ohmy.gif

I would say it has the best legacy out of the three though. If I ever hear a back to basics song played on the radio (which is rare), it is usually candyman.

Candyman's peak is a bit mis-leading I think. It was much more successful in the charts than your average #17 hit in 2007, even in its original run.

I'd say Dirrty is Christina's most famous song (or maybe Genie in a Bottle) so surprised it is so low but I guess that is indicative of the chart sales at the time it was released.

The article is a bit funny, no way does Say Something have that many streams when it was only on 45m in May (unless they were wrong then), it also states that Genie sold 863k copies but I'm taking that to mean combined sales seeing as it couldn't have sold >100k pure sales since May.

Don't forget it's not as simple as diving the streams by 100 to work out the sales totals now. Those pure sales totals you've worked out are lower than they were last May.

'Genie In A Bottle' is the only song of hers that doesn't make me want to vacate the room immediately. It's held up the best of all her singles to be honest, even 20 years on.

THAT abhorrent top two ahead of so many Xtina classics is homophobia tbh. The rest of that top 5 is fantastic though!

I'm surprised it's not more popular than it is tbh. Dirrty is a staple club classic now, would have thought it would be Platinum considering the amount of hits from that time that have now achieved that.

Christina Aguilera's turnaround rate for albums may be slower than your average popstar at six in 20 years, but she rarely fails to deliver the goods each time. To date, she's landed 23 Top 40 hits on the Official Singles Chart, 17 of which peaked inside the Top 10, with four going all the way to the top.

To mark her 20 years in music, she's begun her first Las Vegas residency Xperience, joining several other stars including Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Gwen Stefani who have reinvigorated what was once a retirement ground for heritage acts.

Take a look at Aguilera's Top 20 biggest singles in the UK at the bottom of the page - it makes for a great show setlist, by the way - but first, some highlights:

Genie in a Bottle
Every pop superstar's career has to start somewhere and Christina's kickoff was better than most. A genuine phenomenon when released in 1999, demand was so high that the US import charted the week before its official UK release. Shifting 172,000 copies in that first seven days on sale, Genie in a Bottle spent two weeks at Number 1. It lands as her third biggest song with combined sales of 884,000 made up of 718,000 CDs and downloads sales and 25.1 million audio and video streams.

On her rundown, it clocks in as her fourth biggest song overall with 869,000 combined sales, including 41.4m streams.

Dirrty
If Lady Marmalade was the starter, Dirrty was the main. Christina was pulling no punches her – the video was set at a very rough boxing match – on this fantastically gritty Number 1 from 2002. The lead from her huge-selling second album Stripped, Dirrty spent two weeks rubbing itself up against the Number 1 spot, and has scored 593,000 combined sales (including 30.6m streams) to land in Christina's all-time Top 5. Despite its success across Europe, Dirrty struggled in the US and stalled at Number 48, mainly due to lack of radio play which counts towards the Billboard Hot 100.

Beautiful
Christina's most recent Number 1 (though she has come painfully close on several occasions since), this self-love empowering ballad knocked Tatu's All The Things She Said off the top in 2003 (Take a look at the chart the week Beautiful went to Number 1 – it's a corker). It's combined sales stand at 568,000 copies, including 24.6m streams since we started counting in 2014. Its legacy is the countless 'be yourself' torch songs that have dominated the charts ever since.

Moves Like Jagger
Now, a big one. Christina hadn't been in the Top 10 for a while when this insanely catchy track from a revitalised Maroon 5 came along in 2011. Yep, Moves Like Jagger spent an agonising seven weeks at 2, beaten to the top by six different songs by the likes of Example, Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris, Pixie Lott and One Direction. Argh.

In fact, Moves Like Jagger is the second bestselling single in the history of the Official Singles Chart not to get to Number 1, beaten (again) by Wham’s Last Christmas. It was the second biggest selling single of 2011, behind Adele's Someone Like You, and is Christina's biggest song in the UK – 1.9m combined sales including 57.4 million streams. However, while it is her top seller overall, it isn't her most streamed track...

Say Something
Another memorable feature from Christina, this song became a hit after our leading lady spotted it on So You Think You Can Dance and was anxious to collaborate with A Great Big World on a new version. The Christina-enhanced song reached Number 4 in 2014 and has 1.05m combined sales. It's Christina's most streamed track in the UK, notching up 113m plays, helping it to finish second in her all-time Top 20. It's also her most recent Top 40 hit.

So, in about a year Dirrty achieves around 70k sales/~6k a month?

I guess it should go Platinum before the summer is over at least.

Imagine how huge Dirrty would’ve been if released in the streaming era.

It’s definitely the song of hers I hear the most when going out.

Stripped though was just one of the best all time pop female albums tbh amazing album heart.gif

Such a shame at Moves Like Jagger being her best seller but that’s to be expected.

Stripped era Xtina would’ve dominated Spotify like Ariana of today does now in my opinion had it been around in the early 00’s
