YouGov's model suggests 56% of people are proud to be English England average: 57% People think the best years are in the... past: 45% England average: 49% future: 19% England average: 17% People think the local area is getting... better: 13% England average: 11% worse: 34% England average: 39% People think they can influence local decisions... a fair amount or a lot: 24% England average: 21% not very much or at all: 71% England average: 73% |

...and I guarantee you the polls in 1970 would have produced the same results because, errr, rose-tinted spectacles. And they had the War to look back on.
Old people when I was young always went on about community spirit and kids being polite and less crime in their day, forgetting mass murder, decimated economy, young people fighting abroad and dying. Old people are mostly unhappy because they are old and life isnt as good as it is when you're young. Nothing to do with being English. For the record, I'm British. I have nothing in common with English flag-waving southern softie right-wing rose-tinted deluded white people. Happy to get along with them, but I don't in any way agree with them. Mind you if I fancy going back in time for nostalgia sake I can always have a day trip to Gloucester or Cheltenham, very nice day out. No shops, but nice parks and gardens and buildings

I always put English on forms as I feel more English than British and I am from the England segment so it feels right. I have only put British once that I can recall.

I am actually English according to my Birth certificate (Military kids born abroad have their nationality declared as either British or one of the 4 home nations) but if I’m outside of the UK i will say that I’m Scottish because England is trash and has a well deserved abysmal rep. I am ashamed to be British. I would rescind my nationality in a heartbeat if I could get German citizenship |

I tried a few selected postcodes on this yesterday. It was interesting to note that Leave-voting areas were more likely to say that the country's best days are in the past than Remain-voting areas. In other words, people in Leave-voting areas don't seem to expect things to get any better.

Nothing anti-English about the SNP.
Scotland would likely be around the breakeven point. It’s a wealthy country but has some pockets of deep poverty that EU cash would be invested in. Scotland wants more immigration but is currently hamstrung by the racists in Westminster. They refuse to allow Scotland to have a scheme to retain talented international students. It’s heavily documented that Scotland is pro-migration and is doing as much as it can to attract people. An independent Scotland wouldn’t be mid-Brexit so would be an attractive proposition |

English nationalism is unnecessary because England is already the dominant partner in the union. English culture pervades the other three members of the union and their nationalist parties counterbalance that. If you live in the centre of England, that's fine but it's unnecessary to be proud of it, your pride is there just by being.
