Yougov have just done a very large survey on this subject...
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44306737 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-58...ud-English.html I'd quote a Guardian link too, if there was one... |

...and I guarantee you the polls in 1970 would have produced the same results because, errr, rose-tinted spectacles. And they had the War to look back on.
Old people when I was young always went on about community spirit and kids being polite and less crime in their day, forgetting mass murder, decimated economy, young people fighting abroad and dying. Old people are mostly unhappy because they are old and life isnt as good as it is when you're young. Nothing to do with being English. For the record, I'm British. I have nothing in common with English flag-waving southern softie right-wing rose-tinted deluded white people. Happy to get along with them, but I don't in any way agree with them. Mind you if I fancy going back in time for nostalgia sake I can always have a day trip to Gloucester or Cheltenham, very nice day out. No shops, but nice parks and gardens and buildings |

When filling in forms, I always put my nationality as English rather than British if I can. No shops? England is not an independent country, it's one of four jointly ruled (albeit outnumbering the other 3) so when it comes to nationality you are British. That would be like someone putting Texan down as their American nationality...... Shops? Exaggerating for comic effect. The truth is those that have survived are based on Grace Brothers and talk about Mrs Slocum's pussy getting wet in the rain. Cos he's outside of course. No catflaps either. |

I always put English on forms as I feel more English than British and I am from the England segment so it feels right. I have only put British once that I can recall.

I am almost certain that more Welsh people see themselves as Welsh rather than British and more Scottish people see themselves as Scottish rather than British. I suppose its because England is the biggest country in Britain, has the capital and kind of dominates Britain a bit as a result, more people see themselves as British there. Plus English nationalism, because unfortunately it tends to get associated with far right groups, understandably puts a lot of people off it. Yes, it's strange that English nationalism is considered very right-wing, whereas Scots & Welsh nationalists are regarded as somewhat to the Left. |

Because they aren’t driven by racists!!!
I am actually English according to my Birth certificate (Military kids born abroad have their nationality declared as either British or one of the 4 home nations) but if I’m outside of the UK i will say that I’m Scottish because England is trash and has a well deserved abysmal rep. I am ashamed to be British. I would rescind my nationality in a heartbeat if I could get German citizenship |

I tried a few selected postcodes on this yesterday. It was interesting to note that Leave-voting areas were more likely to say that the country's best days are in the past than Remain-voting areas. In other words, people in Leave-voting areas don't seem to expect things to get any better.

Nothing anti-English about the SNP.
Scotland would likely be around the breakeven point. It’s a wealthy country but has some pockets of deep poverty that EU cash would be invested in. Scotland wants more immigration but is currently hamstrung by the racists in Westminster. They refuse to allow Scotland to have a scheme to retain talented international students. It’s heavily documented that Scotland is pro-migration and is doing as much as it can to attract people. An independent Scotland wouldn’t be mid-Brexit so would be an attractive proposition |

Yes, it's strange that English nationalism is considered very right-wing, whereas Scots & Welsh nationalists are regarded as somewhat to the Left. Because the Scots and Welsh actually were oppressed by the English for a very long time. The Welsh language was almost killed off because of the English and there’s still a large number of English people that continue to ridicule it I don’t even get this being proud of where you come from business anyway. I come from Wales but it makes me absolutely no better than anyone else just because of an accident of geography. I’m proud because I know I’m a good person and have a good family. I don’t take pride out of the fact I was born somewhere. I always put British on forms anyway because as much as I’m Welsh, I have a lot of English and Irish in me as well. I’m sometimes ashamed to be British though, and that boils down to the fact that some people do inhuman things in the name of this country which is so unfair on the rest of us. |

English nationalism is unnecessary because England is already the dominant partner in the union. English culture pervades the other three members of the union and their nationalist parties counterbalance that. If you live in the centre of England, that's fine but it's unnecessary to be proud of it, your pride is there just by being.
Incidentally I always put British because I |

England is a nation made up of foreign invaders taking over, then moving on and taking over huge parts of the world. The irony is the foreign-hating flag wavers are all descended from invading foreigners and the Empire was based on conquering and theft and invading other cultures.
Just saying. Not exactly something to be proud of IMHO. Genocide is such an UGLY word...(along with the Spanish, the Dutch, the French, the Portuguese, the Germans, the Japanese, the Italians, the Greeks, the Danes, and so on and so on). "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" Samuel Johnson 1775. He was English you know, back in the good old days of Empire.... |

Because the Scots and Welsh actually were oppressed by the English for a very long time. The Welsh language was almost killed off because of the English and there’s still a large number of English people that continue to ridicule it That seems like an exaggeration to me (the ridicule part) - how many such people can you actually name? QUOTE I don’t even get this being proud of where you come from business anyway. I come from Wales but it makes me absolutely no better than anyone else just because of an accident of geography. It's more to do with history - for example, very many of the technologies we take for granted today were invented in Britain... https://www.techradar.com/news/world-of-tec...ons-ever-548346 IMO our accomplishments far outweigh our mistakes. |
