hi.gif I was born in '97 and here's what I remember

A List
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car [A-A]
Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana [A-A]
Kylie Minogue - The Locomotion [A-A]
Salt 'N' Pepa - Push It [A-A]
Yazz & The Plastic Population - The Only Way Is Up [A-A]

B List
^ Four Tops - Reach Out (I'll Be There) [C-B]
* Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour [B]

C List
James Brown - I Got You (I Feel Good) [C-C]

wow at how big the playlist was back then though, wish it was a similar size now. clearly not a lot has aged well as I can only recall 8 songs on the entire playlist. though I suppose it'll be the same for the next generation looking back on 2018.

It is a shame the playlists now are so much smaller and more restrictive. Even comparing to how it used to be earlier this century too.

Amazing seeing the playlist from this far back! I always thought the radio 1 playlist started in the mid 90s!!

I take it all these songs entered the playlist high up of is that just the info you have?

Is that Mory Kante that famous dance track?

Yep that's all I have for now, including some from August of '88. There are also some Radio 1 playlists available on the net from parts of '81 to early '83.

On the second question, yes it is! It was recently remixed 7 years ago too:

It's incredibly rare to find a full Radio 1 playlist this old. Some are available on old issues of the Music Week & Record Business magazines on the American Radio History website: https://www.americanradiohistory.com/index.htm

You can find the playlists for August '88 on Music Week and parts of '81 and 1982 on Record Business.

30/11/1996 Mory Kante Yeke Yeke - 96 Remixes

The 1995 one is the one we hear in clubs traditionally I assume.

Also on the playlist - are most of these songs high A List new entries?

Miraculously, they're just stagnant. Only Rod Stewart's song was an instant A-List add.

Must listen to that!

I love Def Leppard's 'Love Bites' on that chart, its quite an epic, as is 'Dirty Diana' by Michael Jackson. As for S'express' Superfly Guy, 'ain't this the mother!....'. 'Push It' by Salt n Pepa is a bop and the number 1 from Glenn Medieros is very cheesy but nice enough though.

Anyone knows why the James Brown track, which was 23 years old at the time, was playlisted?

I know it featured in Good Morning Vietnam but that came out at the start of 1988,
