I was expecting to be unable to write a commentary this week, so popchartfreak will be doing one instead. Unfortunately, he is stuck in traffic so it will be a little late. It should be up some time in the next hour or two!

It was a real thriller running ahead on neck and neck on mid-weeks with Calvin Harris & Sam Smith going for a 7th week on top. In the end it was a double movie domination for both the singles and albums chart as Bradley Cooper helps Shallow give Gaga the top spot with the A Star Is Born ballad. I would have loved to see Bradley Cooper sing it as Rocket Raccoon but I guess that would have affected his Oscar chances, and ruined the moment a bit for Gaga. Other Gaga soundtrack songs go up to 25 (Always Remember Us This Way) and with Rocky Raccoon, I’ll Never Love Again at 27. The rest are all starred-out. Funky Friday turns out to be less than accurate as it drops one spot, perhaps Freaky Friday would have given it a Halloween boost and an annual comeback each October for Dave and Fredo. Meanwhile Thursday is up to 23 for Jess Glynne as All I Am falls out the top 10. Saturday through Wednesday fail to feature in the top 40 this week, sadly. Rita Ora swaps with Little Mix and Nicki Minaj at 5, from 6, while Sunflower enters at 7. Sadly it’s not the current song called Sunflower I’d prefer, it’s Post Malone and Swae Lee, an occasional parcel delivery company. That’s Post’s 12th chart hit and Swae’s 3rd. Kodak Black goes up to 8 with Zeze, and on the whole I prefer his grandma Cilla’s back catalogue (Note to self: check Wikipedia before posting). Travis Scott helps him out with his amazing tribute to gardening hoes, political greats of the past, and Halloween references to Phantoms and spooky stuff, not to mention the birdwatching twitchin’ of feathered Great Tits and campaigning for abused asses, good to see donkeys don’t get all the headlines. Apparently he busts out of his jeans in cars, he should try Primark and go up a size. I wonder what his grandma would say? Probably where’s that bar of soap gone when you need it. Khalid does Better, an album-boosted new peak of 18, as Zara Larsson tries to Ruin My Life with a new entry at 31 her 9th chart entry, which along with well over 25% of the chart songs somehow accidentally produce bleep versions for radio to play. Spooky how many chart acts have such admirable artistic integrity. I’d love to see one brave little Devil release a non-sweary track for general release, and one with swear words just for radio and TV. New at 36 it’s Dua Lipa and her weekly collab with someone else, this time Blackpink, a South Korean K-pop girl group with their first (and a first for a South Korean girlband) UK top 40 chart entry Kiss And Make-Up. I wrongly assumed it was a tribute to the 70’s glam rockers and how to apply their stage facial colouring, much as Robbie Williams did in one of his videos. There’s a Nassty Frankenstein’s Monster entry at 35 for D-Block Europe. That was the only tickets available for The Final Countdown 80‘s rockers last O2 tour I think. Young Adz and Dirtbike LB, as always, lend a hand, along with Lil Pino. I make that the 5th Lil to chart in the last few weeks, if one includes Lil Mix. The record, I think it’s safe to say, is going to spearhead a whole new genre of music called Autoned Tourette’s. Finally, in at 39 it’s Rak-Su, ex-winners of X-Factor. I missed that series, but the track isn’t at all bad. Who knew!? A Star Is Born is the first artist-named Soundtrack Album to get the double singles and albums crown since The Beatles did it with Help in 1965 - though various artists soundtracks have done it during that period, with tracks taken from the albums, notably Grease in 1978. The last time a different album from a film called A Star Is Born was topping charts Barbra Streisand topped my own personal charts with Evergreen, her own song from the movie soundtrack, and I was doing A Levels and uni interviews in my own personal rocky horror. Yes it was that long ago: 1977. The album topped the UK albums chart for 2 weeks and now the remake does the same with the soundtrack knocking Jess Glynne off the top after one week. In a bit of a monster mash for me I was in Spain south of Barcelona, to coincide with Gaga’s last gig there, sadly cancelled due to her illness. Barcelona, the 80‘s anthem song, re-charted in the sales chart the other week due to the death of Montserrat Caballe. Montserrat is also a mountain just outside Barcelona with a statuesque huge abbey on it. Not haunted as far as I know so no Ghostbusters needed, but Freddie Mercury was the other partner on the duet with Montserrat and he enters the chart at 5 with the soundtrack to Bohemian Rhapsody, giving Queen a 32nd album chart entry, and a 24th top 10 (including box sets of previously charted Hits albums). I would guessed it was the Live Aid tracks that are selling it as every single person in the country must own all the hits already, had The Platinum Collection of the three hits albums also not shot up to 34. Highest new entry at 4 is Richard Ashcroft, one-time The Verve frontman, returning with Natural Rebel, his 5th solo album top 10, or 11th chart album in all if you count The Verve and his 2010 side project. Number 7 is a little Disturbed - Evolution is the title for the band who did a very successful cover of The Sound Of Silence recently, and who dedicate it to the late Chester Bennington & Vinnie Paul. In at 11 it’s The Undertones, back after decades away...oh hang on (checks) no it’s The Overtones back after not long away at all with their old-stylee pop 6th charted album, all top 10 bar the Christmas album errr and this one. A bit behind them debuting at 12 we have Greta Van Fleet, an American rock band. Quite possibly related to our local company Vincent Van Hire, or perhaps not, but the album promises An Anthem Of A Peaceful Army so it sounds like the sort of thing I would approve of. Dua Lipa has a huge climb to 9 thanks to her brand new Complete Edition as a thanks to all her loyal fans who are delighted to buy the album a second time to get all those singles she has guested on and two brand new tracks. I almost bought the original album on day of release, but didn’t, so hooray for me I just bought the singles I liked instead and didn’t have to wait 74 weeks to get them all. Result! Other notable new entries: Khalid enters at 20 having had some decent singles action building up to the album, R.E.M. may be no more but the BBC can fill in for those of us missing them with a live album entering at 40 for a 24th chart entry. Opera star Bryn Terfel has been doing the rounds promoting his new album, and is rewarded with an entry at 38 while Future & Juice Wrld also enter at 23 that’ll be Future’s 8th chart album including Mix-tapes and Juice Wrld’s 3rd including Mix-tapes. |
