10th March 2019

It's a new entry at for for Morrissey's cover of Roy Orbison's classic chart-topper, It's Over, aided and abetted (without credit) by LP. I never knew he had the vocal croon in him, but it's an emotive song and he does a jolly good job, even if he is a miserable sod generally. That means: his first top 3 since 2004's The First Of The Gang To Die, and his first-ever solo chart-topper after 31 years of trying, AND outdoing near-misses from the Smiths (This Charming Man & How Soon Is Now). Long overdue, and LP gets a second top 10 to boot.

There are 24 new entries this week in a massive clear-out of my chart, there are some classic oldies stacked up flying in circles waiting for a gap too, cos I've been to see Captain Marvel & it's 1995 nostalgia-fest of indie tracks, and fab 10cc in Concert (headed by Graham Gouldman) some 37 years since I last saw them - Eric Stewart was still in the band then, but Godley & Creme were long-departed. Amazingly, the rest of the 1982 line-up are still playing, with the addition of new vocalist Hornal, who enters with his co-write with Graham & featuring Kevin Godley to boot - so it's basically a 10cc track, both in style and substance. The concert started with a 2006 track that escaped me at the time by GG/06 - Gouldman/Godley, a sample of Hotlegs 1970 Neanderthal Man - who were 10cc minus Gouldman - and a great storyline telling the 10cc story. So all 4 members feature on it, making it the first new original-line-up track since 1976 and in at 15. Graham Gouldman wrote Bus Stop for The Hollies in 1966, a teenage songwriter, and appropriately they enter at 69 with a track featured on Netflix' The Umbrella Academy, 1964's We're Through, a goodie I have never really noticed before, but which vaguely sounds familiar (I was watching pop shows on TV in those days).

Empire Of The Sun enter at 7 with a spruced-up ten-year-old unreleased track (I think!), their highest-charting since the same-period top 3's We Are The People & Walking On A Dream. Cat Pierce debuts at 8 with another TV feature, very Lana Del Ray-ish and cool, and Paloma Faith vaults up to 4, her biggest for 2 years, and keeps her run of top 5 singles at 11 years and counting. Pink rockets into the 30, Welshly Arms debut at 40, and the Jonas Brothers get a second hit 11 years late. They previously charted SOS at 75 for one week, and bust that comprehensively now they are all growed up and have charted solo and in DNCE in the interim with some great singles. That has to be the longest ever wait for a follow-up chart feature for an act that peaked at 75!

Jack Savoretti is back again before he's even left, Bananarama get a second entry of the year 38 years on, Sophie Ellis-Bextor orchestrates her 2001 chart-topper for some clubbing nostalgia for me (a big track when I was out every weekend in Southampton), Gabrielle also returns fairly quickly with her comeback 27 years on, Billie Eilish gets a 3rd as the previous 2 drop out, Jungle chart a second track, SYML gets that follow-up entry, as does Ava Max, and Mabel pops in some 30 years after her mum first popped in my charts - that's be Neneh Cherry then...

So you did chart Chrysalis in the end biggrin.gif It's a great song and keeps growing on me, had quite a jump in my chart this week!

Great to see Rat City enter as well, my 18 in the last BJSC and it's continuing to grow on me.

Hi John,

Good to see Paloma Faith in your Top 10.
In Holland she doesn´t hit the chart...for now.

Great Sophie Ellis Baxter entrance.
Best newies are Jonas Brothers, Mabel and Ava Max.

Hi AH, thanks as always smile.gif Glad you liked Ritchie family so much, I was always hoping it was being under-rated as it was so damn instantly catchy, and was hugely happy for it to come 11th! cheer.gif

Hi John!

Giving your #1 a listen now, sounding pretty nice! His voice is still sounding great.

So you did chart Chrysalis in the end biggrin.gif It's a great song and keeps growing on me, had quite a jump in my chart this week!

Great to see Rat City enter as well, my 18 in the last BJSC and it's continuing to grow on me.

Great chart biggrin.gif

Hi Pete, yes I forgot to chart Chrysalis while I was on holiday oops! It's comfortably on my Car download CD pile now (I'm so retro!) laugh.gif

Glad you like It's Over, I was very surprised he could sing that well! Rat City is a goodie, yes indeedy smile.gif

Cheers!

Hi Jordan smile.gif

Thanks for the Ritchie Family support, it does get into the brain and refuses to budge! laugh.gif I'd actually semi-forgotten it till a few years ago when I rediscovered it and obsessed on it laugh.gif

I invariably enjoy your BJSC entries, (and taste in music generally) and G-flip is a goodie - shame it didn't do better, though sweet pop tracks often have an uphill struggle against the indie angst or thumping dance blocks biggrin.gif

Yes, I think it's Mabel's first entry in my chart, I've been a bit meh previously, and this one took quite a few plays to register (I usually buy stuff I like on one play these days, so growers get less of a look-in unless I hear them out and about or on the radio)

Cheers!

Interesting chart. I'm curious as to what the numbers at the end of each entry refer to.

Hi Tim, thanks for dropping by smile.gif Those are "sales" figures I made up based on some sales ratios I got hold of for a chart in 1976 way back when, and decided to apply them to all my charts for consistency. I don't like 75 points down to 1 point as it distorts long-runners and doesn't take into account passion for a chart-topper which is way bigger than, say a track that has 2 weeks at number 40 - which gets more points!

A chart-topper that I have bought gets 170,000 sales for one week, and a number 40 for 2 weeks gets 34,000, and that seems proportionately about right for how much I love them in comparison..... smile.gif

Hi John,

Good to see Paloma Faith in your Top 10.
In Holland she doesn´t hit the chart...for now.

Great Sophie Ellis Baxter entrance.
Best newies are Jonas Brothers, Mabel and Ava Max.

I have to listen to Rosalia !

Hi Sven, Paloma hasn't charted in the UK either, sadly, though radio 2 is supporting the record, at least.

Rosalia is via Pavel in the BJSC, quality live performance!

cheers! cool.gif
