Today marks 5 years since the release of Kylie's 12th studio album Kiss Me Once. Her one and only album release under Roc Nation management, the career move gave Kylie the opportunity to work with different producers and try new ways of creating music whilst still maintaining "the DNA of what a Kylie track is". She employed fellow Aussie singer Sia as co-executive producer to help guide and shape the sound of the album, having recorded three albums worth of material fitting into three genres: 'pure pop', 'dancy-urban' and 'indie'. Together, they selected songs that focused on romance, empowerment and having fun. The album has touches of melancholy moments and glimpses into Kylie's life the previous few years, but doesn't stray too far from joyful catchy pop.

The album is generally considered one of her least good albums, with fans criticising its lack of ambition and reinvention, but it has its fair share of fans too that feel it gets an unfair ride. 5 years on, how do you rate Kiss Me Once? Has your opinion changed, for better or worse, in the time since its release? Where do you think it went wrong with this album?

This to me is such a “meh” album, I don’t dislike it like I do with “body language” but I also do look for it on my Spotify playlist. I do think the 2 songs on the special edition are better than most of the album though.

But overall it’s just all very bland, the album, the visuals, the tour.

It's like X in that it's trying to hit too many marks, but doesn't have the same highs of said album.

I dunno, I think the album could have been better on reflection but there's enough good for me to look back on the era fondly. I enjoyed seeing her 3 times in the year it was released, although it was hard to properly accept for the first time that her hit-making days were behind her completely.

Let's not talk about the 'I Was Gonna Cancel' video though.

That video still irritates me, even “made in heaven” had a better video

I've said it a fair few times but this album gets too much of a hard time! Wow at it being 5 years ago already.

I don’t think it’s her worst album, for me that goes to body language

Still regularly listen to it especially Into The Blue, Sexy Love and the gorgeous Les Sex (which should have been a single). Invested in a vinyl record player recently and the Boxset Vinyl sounds stunning.

Les sex and sexy love are for me 2 of the worst songs on the album

This is the era where Kylie's singles success dive bombed. Her first era without a single hitting the top 10 on UK charts right? Into the blue deserved to be a top 10 at least.

Impossible Princess has that dubious honour, the three singles went #22, #14 and #14! Technically you can count her Greatest Hits 1992 era too, its two singles peaked at #14 & #20.

I still can't at Into the Blue peaking at #12 while Pixie Lott's 'Nasty' got to #9 in the same week drama.gif

Easily her worst album for me, les sex and into the blue are the highlights and crystalize for me should have been on the album as it's really good, the album always feels rushed and all over the place for me. It was also the time I realised her days of big hits were over although into the blue made top 10 here in Ireland. Kiss me once is def an album for the collection purposes only as after many tries it just never clicked with me. I was gonna cancel was awful on every level and should have never made it on the album let alone be the 2nd single. The kiss me once tour said it all though as kylie moved away from the material very quickly.

Because her record company doesn't know how to market her anymore? She should've left straight after the Aphrodite tour.

For me, "Into the Blue" is the only highlight, I like "Sleeping with the enemy" but don't like as much as some of you do.

The into the blue release was messed up and cost her a chance of one more top 10 hit. They really had no clue how to market the campaign. Thankfully bmg are far more clued in.

There was also that thing about how her record label deleted the top version of 'Into The Blue' on iTunes just as it had sneaked into the top 10, and it never really recovered. I think that played a big part in it missing the top 10 officially.

Radio 1 and the like had dumped her by this point as well though, it was never going to be an easy ride.

For me, Into the blue was a nice song, felt outdated though more like a 2009 song, but I liked the lyrics, the vocals...
Here is how they messed up its release:
Video was very weak and disappointing, they released the song and then did TV promotion for it, not on the same week, that itunes incident...
Physicals were released impact week? No idea, anyway she missed her chance at a last top 10 before the charts were changed with streaming etc...

Regarding the album:
For me like most of you, I loved into the blue and les sex, much less the rest...
I was gonna cancel was a disaster, kiss me once the song is not bad itself and sexercize is meh.
I think the rest of the songs are still stronger than album tracks on body language though.

Regarding the era:
Kylie still looked fantastic, styling was very nice and fresh and young, she just was amazingly beautiful during this era, her body super toned, her face like a 30 something and her style was nice.
I met her at the album signing at Paris in March at the Fnac, I was so lucky to be able to get in and be in Paris by chance at the time, told her I came all the way from Beirut and she just raised her hands and said wooooohooooo smile.gif
Then I saw her right in front of me at the Canal plus studios when she sang 3 songs of the album, I was right in front of her, I saw her sing into the blue, sexercize and les sex live and it was magic, she just looked into my eyes and sang to me the second verse of into the blue because I was miming the lyrics with her, it was a special moment.
Finally I saw her on tour in Barcelona that year, the tour was a downer compared to Aphrodite but still it was awesome, the arena was half empty but I had a front row view on the catwalk and it was a great memory.

Overall I cannot dislike this era, afterall made me see her face to face and I have fond memories of it, the diversity of the songs on Golden, easily beats it, but hey the album would have gotten to nbr 1 on any other week of the quarter it was released in and a good strategy would have landed her another top 10 single, so it wasn't that bad, the marketing and management behind it was.

The deleting the top selling version of into the blue was just a crazy move and was partly the reason it missed out on going top 10.
