25th March 2019
It's a first week on top for yet another act to debut in 2009, following Paloma Faith, this time Empire Of The Sun and Chrysalis. They've come close 3 or 4 times, but previous highest peak slot was 2 for the Aussies. Well, I say first number one - actually Nick Littlemore hit the top as Pnau in 2012 along with Elton John on Sad, while Luke Steele almost topped my charts 18 years ago in The Sleepy Jackson and their Good Dancers. Emeli Sande gets her second biggest hit (behind chart-topper Hurts) at 2, while her Sparrow is joined by a rat in the top - Rat City at 6. What with Cat in there too it's a Jungle at the top. Mabel has a huge climb into the 30, the third family Cherry to do that, the Nanas are back in the 30 for a tasty 37th year. Go back to 1982, ask me what are the chances I would still be charting new Bananarama records in 2019, and I would have said, pretty much zero. Pretty much are though! 4 10cc album tracks climb, TLC are back in the 40 for the first time since it topped in 1995, Jungle get a 2nd simultaneous top 40, and Billie Eilish gets a 3rd of the year. New entries from Tame Impala, keeping them coming fresh off their top 10 collab, Olly Murs keeping the pop run going in my charts even if he's not a UK chart regular anymore (I've always been much more faithful to acts than the ever-trend-chasing chart-mirroring average teen), Will Young is back knocking on 17 years since his early bland Evergreen and 15 years since he topped my chart with Friday's Child. Sting & Shaggy are also back with another collab, Shaggy makes it 26 years, Sting solo 36 years, and with The Police 40 years. So a total of 66 years charting. Bananarama 37 years? That's nothing. Back when I was 15 Suzi Quatro joined RAK records in the UK, Nicky Chinn & Mike Chapman churned out glam rock stompers for The Sweet, Mud and many others including Suzi, who was pretty much the first female rocker to top the charts with Can The Can & Devil Gate Drive. So, Suzi is back with a new album collaboration with her son, and gets the first 2 tracks off it into my charts. Not too far from Glam Rock, it's fair to say. So, 46 years later and she still charts, and still has never topped my charts. Outrageous! That must be the longest chart career of anyone who has never had a number one for me, despite having at least 3 that deserved to, her last serious effort was in 2011 when she went top 10 with a great cover of Goldfrapp's Strict Machine. 1 4 1 3 CHRYSALIS Empire Of The Sun 285000 2 19 2 2 SPARROW Emeli Sande 136000 3 1 1 5 YOUR EX Paloma Faith 349800 4 2 1 3 IT’S OVER Morrissey featuring LP 350000 5 3 3 6 BEST 54 (ALL GOOD NOW) Jungle 397100 6 28 6 3 KIND OF LOVE Rat City featuring Isak Heim 84100 7 6 6 3 YOU BELONG TO ME Cat Pierce 153000 8 5 5 3 SON OF MAN GG/06 aka 10cc (Kevin Godley & Graham Gouldman) featuring Hotlegs 135000 9 8 1 4 AMERICAN GENERATION The Ritchie Family 323000 10 11 10 6 TALK Khalid & Disclosure 179000 11 7 2 6 365 Zedd & Katy Perry 452000 12 9 6 6 ELECTRO ROMANTICO Bob Sinclar featuring Robbie Williams 257600 13 13 13 3 NEVER COMIN DOWN Keith Urban 87000 14 16 14 5 WALK ME HOME P!nk 95700 15 20 15 3 SUCKER Jonas Brothers 60250 16 12 9 7 WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT THE RICH? Hi John!
Great to see Chrysalis at #1 - one of my favourites from them, really enjoying it! Nice to see Hurricanes on its way up for you as well, glad to see you taking a shine to it Giving the new Tame Impala a listen now - it's sounding nice! Liking the piano riff in there, and the percussion is great as well. Great chart |

Yes Chrysalis is a grower, it seemed pleasant at first, and rewards with replays Hoping Hurricanes is the next single for Dido, and tame Impala can do no wrong for me, always classy and frequently brilliant! cheers! |

I'm OK ta, just getting over pulled back muscles from dealing with mum's needs, needed a walking stick for a few days when I got up out of bed or a chair just to rub it in! So glad you (and a lot of others) went for the Ritchie Family, totally came about because I reviewed 1979 tracks and had forgotten I'd charted it, dug it out and got all mad on it 15 years since PSB's topped, wow! I don't they've ever gone more than 3 years without topping mine - but then I am a bit compulsive when it comes to Neil n Chris I also under-appreciated Elastica at the time, then heard it in Duckies Saturday Night Royal Vauxhall Tavern last year - full blast and it went down a storm. Garbage are another band who can do no wrong for me, and their 90's stuff was especially brilliant. cheers! |
