Gerry having two songs top 20 is ridiculous considering it’s meant to be a best of all time chart.
I do expect he will have a fairly big second album and possible top 100 hit though. Slide Away being the second highest Oasis song feels very odd too. |

Florence and Jade Bird being the only women (there's also Candida in Pulp) Well that's Radio X's audience for you And there aren't that many 'big' British indie female-fronted bands or female artists other than Siouxsie and the Banshees, CHVRCHES, Florence, Wolf Alice, Pale Waves and probably a couple of others. And there aren't that many 'big' British indie female-fronted bands or female artists other than Siouxsie and the Banshees, CHVRCHES, Florence, Wolf Alice, Pale Waves and probably a couple of others. Come off it. Kate Bush PJ Harvey Goldfrapp Eurythmics/Annie Lennox Cocteau Twins Marianne Faithfull Saint Etienne Everything but the Girl Stereolab Laura Marling the xx Portishead ...and this is limiting ourselves to artists that are fairly strictly indie and have had multi-decade, acclaimed careers. So I'm not listing the female equivalents of Sam Fender, or the scores of female artists like Kate Nash who came and went pretty fast, because otherwise we'd be here forever. I remember a similar thing happening over here and I had a similar rationalisation not knowing any better. It feels like an unfortunate systemic problem of music canonisation. Rock & roll canon in particular is egregiously male & white, and it sets the standard for what people internalise as music of the highest grade. Oasis & Kate Bush alike are adored for their catchy hooks & songwriting prowess all the same, but there will be a subset who dismiss one as frivolous and the other as musical perfection. There's an internal desire to vote in these things for music that is objectively good, and unfortunately it defaults to 'loud white dudes with loud guitars'.

I meant ones that appeal to Radio X's audience and what they play - indie rock. I'm not defending them but if you asked their audience who they wanted them to play; it would pretty much all (if not exclusively) male bands, so that's who they pretty much just play. I looked at their playlist and they had about 4 female fronted bands/artists - which really isn't great when I could think of loads of new female bands that get played by the likes of Annie Mac and Jack Saunders. |

I was listening to this as it was being broadcast on Monday, was a great listen and particularly loved hearing several tracks from Radiohead, Muse and The Smiths, as well as being very pleasantly surprised by Shed Seven appearing!

A big slump for Wonderwall. It must have gone on to ACR.
