That's not true though. They went back to (over)playing Maroon 5 after completely dropping them for a while. I don’t think they’d have gone back to Maroon 5 if Moves Like Jagger hadn’t been so massive. They tried their best to ignore that song as they’d already decided that they were irrelevant and they were proved massively wrong. I can’t see Madonna getting a turnaround even if she does have an unprecedented hit. They’ll never believe that teenagers might want to listen to music from a 60 year old woman. It’s not right but it’s unfortunately true. |

When was the last time she was playlisted? 2008?? Celebration in 2009 was the last time she was on the playlist. I don’t know why this gets brought up every era, first of all Radio 1 does not have anywhere near the impact it had 10 years ago - even if she was on the playlist it still wouldn’t be a hit, because it’s streams would be low regardless. Spotify and Apple Music playlists are much more important than radio. Kylie managed to sneak a week in the top 40 with Dancing thanks to a vinyl single and good promo - that’s the best artists like Kylie, Madonna and Cher can ask for. Madonna is the Queen of pop and had over 20 years being played on Radio 1, which most artists now will not get near. Let new and emerging artists have it. Maybe they aren’t playing the new Madonna song because it quite simply isn’t that good, that’s the tea We all know by now that Radio 1 don't playlist songs based on their quality. The tea is that as she's not been playlisted with anything for 10 years, she won't be playlisted ever again no matter what it is. That probably won't ever happen but she could potentially make her way back to R1 through a feature on a rap hit (she's got Quavo and Swae Lee on her upcoming album and previously featured on a Quavo AT).

Unless Calvin Harris get her on his next single Even that wouldn’t make a difference. Maroon 5 aside, once Radio 1 drop an artist, they never come back. It’s not even an age thing. They last play listed Paloma Faith (with her own material) with Picking Up The Pieces. She was neither old nor unpopular when they dropped have but she’s only appeared on there as a featured artist ever since. |

I don't get your point? They still feature older tracks from artists they don't play new music from (i.e Robbie, Kylie, Madonna, etc.....) but as Dan said most of their audience would rather listen to the older stuff from those artists instead of their new releases. Radio 1's job is to introduce us to new artists and bands. |

Zero doubt in my mind that BBC radio 1 is ageist AND mysognisitic.
Madonna is the perfect example. BBC as a whole does have a known ageism bias. Especially where women are concerned. We all know it. Despite Madonna's music often sounding like other music played on the station (often same producers etc), she's not played because the BBC Radio 1 programmers don't think their audeince listens to her. They think it's because she's too old. That's prejudice, and whilst it may be true (that younger listeners don't know her music), it doesn't make it right. A publicly funded body has a moral right to NOT discount somebody's work, just because of his/her age. How about if BBC radio 1 was allowed to NOT play an artist because they sounded too white or too black - there would be uproar, and rightly so. Ageism is no different. BBC radio 1 controllers should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to perpetuate the myth that because someone like Madonna is 60, her music cannot be of interest to someone of 16. Its time to change that. |

But as it's been said - they playlist an artist based on how relevant their music is to their audience. Madonna isn't.
Why would they play music from an artist that very few young people will care about or even know? They don't play new music from Robbie Williams, Take That, Will Young, Boy George, and lots more older artists. They aren't singling Madonna out. This has got nothing to do with her age - but it's to do with who she targets at and who her audience is. David Guetta is 51, his music is playlisted because it appeals to young people and his music is popular. This post has been edited by WhoOdyssey: 25th April 2019, 04:44 PM |

I think female popstars are at a disadvantage because their ages are always well documented and focused on. David Guetta may be 51 but it's never been the focus of media attention where as people have always talked about Madonna's age and I think that has had an effect on radio play.

Radio 1's job is to introduce us to new artists and bands. I am completely aware of this, but I was specifically talking about them (not) playlisting new material from these artists. I think the turning point for Madonna in Radio 1 terms was obviously 'Give Me All Your Luvin', which itself was 3 years after 'Celebration' and they seemed to be stricter in their playlisting of certain artists from the turn of the decade onwards. I remember at the time how shocked I was by that, as I just assumed Madonna had the power to get playlisted forever. This post has been edited by Tawdry Hepburn: 25th April 2019, 06:31 PM |

Come on people - Madonna was playlisted by radio 1 from 1984-2009 that's longer than nearly all other pop stars no matter what their gender.
And if she was a feature on the next Calvin single I'm pretty certain it would be playlisted. And on the moral right of a public service broadcaster to play all types of artists - she was A listed instantly on radio 2 (which these days prob has a bigger iTunes impact anyway lol). |

I don't think he'll leave Radio 1 just yet. At worst he'll be dropped from afternoon's and stay on the chart show, but I doubt he'll be dropped from afternoon's for a while yet!

Maybe he has about 5 more years left until Radio 1 decide he's a Radio 2 artist.
