OMG if it stays like that then ‘I Don’t Care’ will have a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-Out chart run mad.gif

Seems very likely that will be happening laugh.gif I imagine it'll probably re-enter some time later down the line. Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' all over again but for very different reasons.

OCC should change its rules so once a song has charted it can't get starred out. It's silly that the 2nd/3rd most popular song of the week won't be top 100 at all.
New Zealand have the right idea with their rules - only 2 tracks per artist can enter per week but they don't get starred out later on when other tracks overtake.

So would Ed Sheeran slowly get all of the album into the chart instead?

Well the idea is that as the weeks go by the album tracks drop significantly.
I'd also add a rule where album tracks are on ACR until they're promoted to official single status to stop album tracks charting highly just from album streams, so that would stop Ed's entire album charting in week 7.

Totally agree although wasn't sure how they'd do that as I said in the First Look thread. It's just ridiculous looking an official single that was no1 for 8 weeks dropping out two weeks later because of the three song rule.

New Zealand have the right idea with their rules - only 2 tracks per artist can enter per week but they don't get starred out later on when other tracks overtake.

It's a little more complicated than that. An artist can have 4 debuts in a week, but if they have 1 song on the chart already, then it's 3, if they have 2 or more, then it's 2. It gets kind of dumb though when there's a really popular album out and you get successive entries from the 5th & 6th biggest tracks the week after, but then that just gives them a chart peak that's meaningless. You also see the flaw when it's easy for an artist to just drip feed pre-release singles and then they arbitrarily just have more entries on the chart when the album comes out.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I really do think album tracks should just be let on the chart as they are. People make the argument that they get their streams in a passive sense when people are just streaming an album but I cannot be convinced that it's at the same level of passive as in-house playlists, which feel like forcing a status quo rather than the will of the public.

If it hadn't been for this decline of 71 streaming 'sales' a few weeks ago, IDC would still be on SCR and likely challenging for a return to #1:

what the occ should do is separate proper album streams vs single/playlist streams, so there's no double counting, you count for the album charts or you don't, you count for the singles c hart of you don't, but you don't count for both

it's silly that beautiful people is gonna be #1 cos of the album streams
and it's equally wrong that if I passively listen to HH I'm giving album streams to the album

You can look at it in the reverse though, people are streaming the album because they like Beautiful People & such. If they were put off by the tracks, they may well not stream it, but the pre-release tracks (and Ed's reputation by extension) has earned those streams in the first place. If they don't like it after one listen and never listen again, at the end of the day, they still provided the streaming royalties. Otherwise let's not count pre-orders, or any sales without proof that the buyer has listened to the album in full, they're buying purely on faith, just as Spotify users are listening to Ed's album on faith wink.gif

Either way, I can seldom imagine charts & record companies agreeing to a change that only serves to lower attributed sales. There's no benefactor to that.

Kylie showing strong indications that the album is safe to stay Top 5 dance.gif
The Ed Sheeran sales, those numbers are great but not great for him.
I know this is not his new album as such, more a mixtape style release but i thought it would be much higher by now.
