Quite possibly my favourite Kylie song of all time and definitely in my Top 3.

11 years ago ‘The One’ became the 4th and final single from X and was a chart disaster due to the record company (36-83-85) despite the first 3 singles going Top 10 cry.gif

Had it been the first single from X I’m still convinced it would have reached #1.

11 years already? drama.gif a really sophisticated and dreamy song from Kylie that deserved so much more in the UK!

Should be re-released.

Don't count it out for the Greatest hits streaming in future weeks with a remix or 2 added. She has said it is her favourites in interviews and is also Paul's favourite.

I’ll never forgive the cancellation of the CD single! sad.gif What were they thinking? We’ll never know what could have been had it been released, but I reckon it wouldn’t have done any worse than Top 15.

I feel like it wouldn’t have been a #1 single if released in place of 2 Hearts. Obviously that’s another “we’ll never know what could have been” situation, but Kylie would have had to have done 75k to knock Bleeding Love off #1! I’d like to think that The One would have comfortably reached #2 though (30k+ required).

I’m annoyed that the Freemasons Edit isn’t available on UK Spotify (possibly other countries too). Think it might be available in Australia though.

I actually wish it was the Freemasons version on Step Back in Time, so that we had that version available nowadays. It feels like the “hit” version to me with it being used in the music video.

Absolutely crazy decision by them to cancel the CD single huh.gif Back then CD singles were still selling well so there was no reason for them not to!

Also agree on the Freemasons edit - only the 9 minute remix version is available on Apple.

I still can't get over how the CD single was cancelled about 3 days before it was released. sad.gif I agree, it probably would have at least went top 15 if not for that.

It's am an amazing track, I do feel like over time I've came around to the idea it should've been the lead single.

Sonically it's similar to Call the Shots, which was a much bigger hit than 2 Hearts at the time.

I really do think it should have been the lead and would have been far more successful than what they went with. A lost classic~

I would love to know the decision behind scrapping the CD singles so late in the day, especially as artwork and mixes had been commissioned and the CDs produced. That’s why ‘The One’ promo CD is always sought after (Also the fact they didn’t seem to make many of those either).

Commercially ‘X’ was a success so even more bizarre for them to dump single 4.

I looked back on The One's BuzzJack thread from 2008.

http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=2084272

QUOTE
"Just spoke to Parlophone Press Office & a certain senior member of the team (who cannot be named at this time) has just confirmed to me that 'THE ONE' video will DEFINATELY be circulating/premiered in UK BEFORE the end of this week. They are just 'tweaking the video & adding the final touches' apparently?.

Also, he has REFUSED to rule out a possible Physical release of this single on CD/vinyl.

Reading between the lines, he led me to believe that providing there is enough fan/customer support and interest, Parlophone may be (in his own words) 'forced' to put out the single on physical format/s, if even, in limited quantities once the video has premiered."

This was posted on 5th August (The One was released digitally on 28th July). So it seems physicals weren't actually planned, let alone printed, in time for the digital release. (Edit: I've now seen that scheduled physicals were mentioned on The One Promo CD Sticker!) So it doesn't seem like physicals were cancelled days prior to digital release?

This has also lead me to recall that the video premiered two weeks after the download release.

In summary... a complete mess of a release!

I do remember though that it was fully scheduled for a physical release, with pre-orders being available from the HMV website and everything until it got cancelled. I am fully certain it was despite what that says.

I did some more digging!

I looked at the Promo CD on Discogs - the sticker on the back said that physicals were scheduled for July 28th (these promo CDs were in circulation by early June 2008).

20th June:
http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=1996289
^ Artwork was posted on HMV, but it's determined that the artwork used was fan made.

1st July:
QUOTE(Jark @ Jul 1 2008, 05:31 PM) *
According to The Headless Postman on SayHey (the man who told us about 2 Hearts, about Wow, and countless other correct insider info) there'll be no video of any sort, and no physical release. The song will be download-only from July 28th (and will not be chart-eligible).

So angry.
^ Obviously "no video" didn't end up being true*, but this is the earliest post I can find referencing physical cancellation. "Will not be chart-eligible" was evidently wrong too, but I guess that was The Headless Postman not fully understanding the chart rules at the time?

7th July:
QUOTE(Jark @ Jul 7 2008, 12:40 PM) *
Really guys, it's out in three weeks (to download). If there was still going to be a physical we'd know tracklists, covers, etc by now. It's not happening! HMV just haven't updated heehee.gif
^ This suggests that HMV's pre-order page was a placeholder, with no official artwork or track list revealed by this stage.

12th July:
QUOTE(Matt_James @ Jul 12 2008, 04:44 PM) *
Ive just been onto hmv.com
The cd single for the one has been deleted
What is going on?
The best track from X and with the freemasons mix its apsolute gem of a track
Its one of the best tracks of 2008 for me

Does anyone know any more details with regards to this?

Matt
^ Pre-order finally removed from HMV, which was 2 weeks in advance of digital release.

* 24th July:
QUOTE(Glyn @ Jul 24 2008, 10:49 AM) *
I've read on the official K forum Here that we are getting a video for The One afterall. It was filmed last week apparently. yahoo.gif (i know it's not an official source, but it's still exciting!)
^ The fairly late video shoot (possibly occurred only a week and a half before the digital release) would explain why it didn't end up premiering until 11th August! It makes me wonder if the "no video shoot" insider information was true as of 1st July, but then they eventually decided to go ahead after all.

~

All of this does make me wonder if Parlophone never got as far as to work on artwork / track lists for the proposed physical releases. The sticker on the promo CD might indicate that it was an early assumption from the label that they would go on to release physicals for it, but then as time went on they changed their minds, for some strange reason. At least it seems like nothing was printed, so the physical cancellation wasn't a "CDs are printed but we're withholding them from sale / sending them to landfills" situation.

It's a pity that this didn't happen:
"REFUSED to rule out a possible Physical release of this single on CD/vinyl. Reading between the lines, he led me to believe that providing there is enough fan/customer support and interest, Parlophone may be (in his own words) 'forced' to put out the single on physical format/s, if even, in limited quantities once the video has premiered."
...but 36-83-85-out must have put them off thinking it was worthwhile. I really don't know what else Parlophone would have expected from a digital only song released 2 weeks in advance of a video though. :/

Side note: I would love to own the promo CD of 'The One' someday, but it usually goes for £50+ and I can't justify it. cry.gif

^^ My ‘The One’ promo CD cost me £22 recently from an international seller on eBay so they do sometimes come up for cheaper than I’ve seen then sell for (£80+ in some case).

Thank you for doing some digging, Jay! Much appreciated, although it's annoying to be reminded just how much of a mess the situation was! At least 'The One' has become something of a Kylie classic as far as the fans are concerned and general fans will probably be more familiar with it than they would have at the time of release, thanks to plenty of performances since and its inclusion on Step Back in Time.

I love '2 Hearts' but I've got to admit 'The One' being lead single could have been huge.

Would a new remix say by Calvin Harris and a full on release manage to do something in the charts do you think?

I doubt it, although a Calvin Harris single featuring her (or even a Sigala single) could do.

I imagine the former would never happen now.

Maybe just a limited cd and vinyl release for the fans would work for the one as the fans would love it.
