15 years ago, what became a trend-setting dance track went head-to-head with a signature girlband hit.

'Call On Me' was the breakthrough hit for Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz, a looped-house track worked around a sample of Steve Winwood's 1982 song 'Valerie' (Steve was that impressed he had actually re-recorded his vocal). Accompanying the song was its iconic music video which was undoubtedly a big driving force in the song's success. Inspired by a scene in 1985's Perfect with John Travolta and Jamie Lee Curtis, a sexually suggestive gym routine is performed, much to the enjoyment of the one man in the class.

'Love Machine' was the second single from Girls Aloud's second album and saw a change up of style with its quirky retro sound. The song was recorded in 18 parts, which added to the confusion for the girls as to what the finished product would sound like. The girls voiced their disapproval of the song but, ultimately, the record company released it.

Both were hot contenders for #1 but the success of the 'Call On Me' video on music channels helped it to debut at #1 with an almost 2 to 1 lead over 'Love Machine' (68,138 vs. 35,828). 'Call On Me' has gone on to sell over 800k and 'Love Machine' falls short of 400k, although still enough to place it as one of Girls Aloud's best selling singles.

15 years on, which song is your favourite?

I’m a huge Girls Aloud fan but it’s got to be ‘Call On Me’, I’m a sucker for a lot of loopy noughties dance!

Call On Me for sure, wasnt even a huge fan of it at the time but always found Love Machine to be one of their worst & was extremely overexposed at the time.

American Idiot blows them both out of the water however.

25 (NE) Annie - Chewing Gum

That's it, that's the one.

Between the 2, Love Machine it's one of the least memorable singles of Girls Aloud (though I quite liked at the time). Call On Me is a classic of the mid 00's

very easily Call On Me, I'd say it was that song was responsible for me getting into dance music so much in the first place.

shout out to American Idiot too, one of the best songs of that year and really should've been #2 that week over Girls Aloud.

Would be 'Call On Me' for me but out of the three. 'American Idiot' has to top it.

I love Girls Aloud but still to this day don’t really like Love Machine sad.gif Definitely one of their weaker singles.

So Call On Me wins.

Get No Better by Cassidy feat Mashonda is easily the best song out of the list. Between the two main songs though I'd say I prefer Love Machine, Call On Me obviously has a better video though!

Narrowly 'Call On Me', that is one of GA's best songs though.

I’m surprised Call On Me is winning this but it’s the right choice. Always annoying how it was denied cd1 track 1 on Now 59. Love Machine is pretty terrible-don’t the girls even dislike it now?

I like American Idiot more than both tho.

I'm pretty sure (from a documentary I watched in the past) that the girls always disliked 'Love Machine' and begged the label not to release it because they thought it would be "career suicide" laugh.gif that didn't quite end up happening! Btw I think I also prefer 'American Idiot' to both of these songs.

Call On Me, by quite a distance for me. One of my fave 00's songs! Love Machine really irritates me laugh.gif

Get No Better getting to #24 is such an injustice! sad.gif Such a great song. So underrated. Chewing Gum is brilliant too!

Now 59's tracklisting is such a mess. Blue & Daniel Bedingfield both starting their respective discs is one of the most bizarre decisions in the history of compilations. Even more so now that they weren't even huge hits.

Eric Prydz & Nelly should have started each disc.
