Doctor Blind Chart - 24th November 2019

Canadian composer Dan Snaith has been putting out music as Caribou and Manitoba since 2005 but only first charted here as Caribou in September 2007 with the psychedelic late-60s pop sounding “Melody Day”, taken from the critically acclaimed Andorra album which won the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. He scored his first and until this week only #1 on my chart in the autumn of 2014 with the slow building dance single “Our Love” (#1 for 5 weeks), the title track of his 4th album as Caribou. After 5 years he is back with a shimmering standalone single “Home”, an Avalanches sounding track which heavily samples and repurposes Gloria Barnes' lost 1971 Northern Soul classic of the same title, retaining its main hook but lifting it into a bright, warm and uplifting track which this week smoothly slides 2-1 to become the twenty-first number 1 of 2019 and 205th of the 2010s so far. That all means that UK singer/songwriter and poet Kate Tempest falls from the #1 spot after 2 weeks there with “People's Faces (Streatham Version)”.. though it remains a strong challenger and could easily re-take #1 as we head into December.

There are 4 new tracks climbing into this weeks' Top 10- leading the charge is former Chairlift lead singer Caroline Polachek and “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” which storms 12-5 and becomes her second Top 5 solo hit, following “Door” (which made #3) - she has also had a Top 10 with Danny L Harle in the summer of 2016 with “Ashes of Love” (#9) and on many occasions as part of the aforementioned Chairlift but has never had a #1. East Coast hip hop duo Gang Starr who pioneered the sound in the late 80s and early 90s move 11-6 this week with new single “Family and Loyalty” - taken from 7th (posthumous - Guru passed away in 2010 at the age of 48) album, a collection of unreleased recordings entitled One of the Best Yet. Other Top 10 entrants include Holy Fuck with their first hit since 2008 (“Lovely Allen”) and Alexis Taylor with “Luxe” surging 13-8, and Anna Meredith who scores a second Top 10 hit from new album Fibs with the pop sounding “Inhale Exhale” leaping 14-10.. it follows previous single, the September #1 hit “Paramour” (this week moving 41-48).

The full chart follows, including 5 new entries from very different acts: Confidence Man, Goom Gum, PINES, Metronomy and Grimes.

Even though I think our tastes are nowhere near as aligned as they once were, I still add songs I don't know from your chart onto Spotify playlists of songs to check out and whilst it seems to be an increasing number that don't get many listens, occasionally there's one that makes me so glad I do, at the moment it's 'Nothing Is Safe' - it's absolutely incredible and I can foresee a long top 3 run for me in December and January. wub.gif

A great number one - I've ended up loving 'Home' a lot although I wasn't as sure at first, hope there's more Caribou stuff next year. His work as Daphni is good, but not really a patch on the two Caribou albums.

Hope to see OTHERLiiNE continue to climb, really good combination and really looking forward to hearing that album in Jan.

I've never really liked Girl Band's stuff, listened to a few of theirs, but saw them supporting Metronomy a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed them which was a nice surprise.

That's good to know Mark! “Nothing Is Safe” is really good - a BANGER, it sounds like something that may have been a crossover hit on the UK chart in 2004. I'm not the biggest Hip-Hop fan, but I do love it!

Re: Girl Band - it has been a great year for Irish bands with top singles also by Fontaines D.C. and The Murder Capital.

Thanks for the comment. : )

It's cool to see clipping. showing up in someone else's personal chart as I don't think I've ever seen them mentioned elsewhere on the site, although I much prefer 'Blood Of The Fang' to this song if you haven't heard that one! I may need to start checking out songs in your chart by artists that I'm unfamiliar with as well, as I really like most of the stuff that makes your charts which I have actually heard, your tastes cross over very closely with at least the more 'alternative' leaning side of my tastes. (I did actually make a nice discovery from listening to an artist I only recognised from your chart earlier in the year already, 'Lifetime' by Yves Tumor <3)

A small geeky irrelevant comment - I notice that seemingly every single song in your chart has a neat chart run, moving up every week until peaking and then moving down every week after that, is that done on purpose or is it just a coincidence?

That's cool, yes “Lifetime” was a #1 for me last year and was in my Top 3 of 2018. The album it came from is worth checking out too.

Yes the chart runs are a bit of an artefact of the way I compile the chart -but it works for when I put the year-end chart together; essentially I have a everyday chart playlist on my iPod which shuffles through the Top 20 and less frequently used bigger one that shuffles through the whole Top 50 plus any new tracks that I've heard that or in previous weeks (that didn't make the chart) - so as songs grow on me they move up and eventually onto the higher rotation Top 20 one (which means I hear them more) - or quickly drop out if they've grown off me. I find it works for me anyway, but yes I know it can be quite slow and behind at times! We have 6Music on at work too so naturally I become exposed to some tracks more and more there.

I will have to check out “Blood Of The Fang” - as you will see I do chart quite a bit of Hip-Hop lately from artists like Danny Brown and Denzel Curry - both had big #1s on my chart in 2017 and this year with “Ain’t It Funny” and “Black Balloons” respectively so am really into quite a bit of that type of music lately.

I love checking your chart for new music I might like.

We also seem to have the same 'pop' tastes I think because Don't Leave Me Lonely isnin your chart, it topped my chart in October.

And yes I have a chart where songs rise and fall like that as I feel it's the way it should be and I listen to songs on my playlist like that.

Hello!
First time checking your chart and wow it is so diverse!
Nice to see "So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings" in the top 10, as well as "Frail State Of Mind" in the top 20 and the huge gain for "Now I'm In It".
Recently heard "It's A Lot" for the first time on a German online Radio Station, where it only plays new music and from first listening I like it, might grow on me in a couple of weeks.
Great Chart!
