V2 :

YTD Sales : Please read these guidelines before you request sales estimates, it makes my task a lot easier.

1. Be specific - please name the artist and title for each entry you'd like an estimate for.
2. I log sales for all albums that have charted this year, but only update those that have sold enough to reach my 200 position tracking range
3. If an album isn't in the current Top 100, I won't be able to update its sales until Tues. Also, please don't ask about ex-T100 albums too often - once a month at most)
4. Remember to check the thread before requesting estimates - they may already have been answered. Also, no more than half-a-dozen requests at a time, thanks.
5. Please note my figures are combined sales & streams, and since I have no way of separating them, I cannot provide a split.
6. While I am no longer estimating singles sales, I can provide YTD singles positions from C+, and I am still maintaining my sales archive based on published figures (PM me if you want to see it)

Thank you.

I've been doing a rough & ready calculation on the rate of % decrease in album sales after week 1...

Week 1-2 : -60% (3/5ths)
Week 2-3 : -30% (3/10ths)
Week 3-4 : -20% (1/5th)
Week 4-5 : -17% (1/6th)

There's a lot a variation depending on artist/genre etc, but those seem to be a reasonable average decline.

Regards,

Double Fleetwood Mac already! I suspect as the album market declines, the top 100 list will end up filled with more greatest hits/classic albums year on year. Hopefully we do get some albums this year that generate enough sustained interest to be a consistent seller over time. Bar Lewis and Billie, I don’t think any others from last year could end up as a classic people are still investing in years down the line.

Interesting about the decline %, thanks for sharing vid.

Do you collate any sales data for the compilation chart? Was wondering if you had any estimated sales for the Frozen 1 soundtrack? No problem if not.

Alas I have no regular source of info for the compilation chart.

Lewis's debut, the biggest seller of last year, has (surely) only this week outsold Four by One Direction which at 682k was the 100th biggest seller of the 2010s.

Speaking of which, OCC published the 20 biggest debut albums of 2019 - Lewis is (obviously) top, but look who made number 20 - unbelievable, Jeff!

Always weird seeing the album sales again in January but interesting further down seeing the totals. Could be a long year of low sales unless Adele comes along but I suspect even she may find it tough in this market.

They've been removed from the Artist Album charts. All Original Soundtracks, Motion Picture Cast albums etc now qualify for the Compilation Albums unless the label can show why an album should be treated as an artist album - this would be where the same artist / act features on every track.

Ah, I always thought including them was a mistake.

All that are not credited for George Michael and Wham, that is tongue.gif

It doesn't make any sense that that album was eligible but ASIB/Bohemian Rhapsody was not.

Bohemian Rhapsody is credited to Queen

I guess that if released now, ASIB would be credited to Gaga/Cooper and then allowed in the main chart

For 'Last Christmas OST' all the tracks feature George Michael, he's the link for all the tracks. One of the tracks on 'Bohemian Rhaspody OST' doesn't feature Queen (one track is performed by the group Smile, an early version of what became Queen and without Freddie Mercury) while 'A Star Is Born' doesn't have the same artist on all tracks. If the label wanted to push the album as being a Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper album they don't perform together on all tracks and even if the OCC were to ignore that there's two tracks where neither feature!

My post crossed with yours. It looks like 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has vanished intothin air as it's on neither the top 200 Artist Albums chart nor the Top 100 Compilation Albums chart unless its sales are very low. But as I posted one track isn't credited to Queen.

For 'A Star Is Born' the label would have to convince the OCC it was a Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper album. But there are two tracks, one instrumental, one featuring other casts members, on which neither appear.

From the Albums Definition Summary part of the Albums Chart Rules:

QUOTE
3. Compilation Album Chart Includes original soundtracks unless all tracks feature the same artist, cast recordings, multi orchestral recordings, and “1 artist per side” albums (if not new).

4. A Cast Recording is defined as a recording featuring the voice(s) of an artist or artists performing a role for which they were first cast for the purposes of a stage, film or TV production

5. Artist Album Chart includes single artist compilations, single orchestra recordings and albums that feature the same performing artist on 100% of tracks

6. Where a cast recording is produced and marketed as an artist studio album, a label may request that the cast recording appear in the Official Artist Albums Chart. The decision shall strictly subject to Official Charts and/or CSC approval.

So theoretically an Adele album featuring one instrumental track could be excluded from album chart? ohmy.gif

it all depends on how strict they are when implementing the rules
but it's funny they're so scrupulous now when a few months back they accepted anything in the album charts
like that Moana soundtrack should have never been accepted as a Cast album when there were songs by people that was not in the cast

The disappearance of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was just because the OCC ceased crediting the songs' streaming numbers to that album a while back, it's still hanging around on the album sales chart at #82 (and did have one further week re-entering the main albums chart at #100 after its abrupt disappearance from #19). I think streams are ostensibly meant to count towards the compilation that has the highest pure sales in any given week but whatever they did with Queen's streams looks like it was pretty arbitrary - the last week that 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was hanging on at #19, it was already no longer their highest or even their second highest selling compilation, it was behind both 'The Platinum Collection' and 'Greatest Hits' on pure sales. And then it appears that when 'Bohemian Rhapsody' fell off, its streaming numbers were transferred to 'Greatest Hits' (which re-entered at #24), with 'The Platinum Collection' also seeing a boost from #51 to #37 which may or may not be unrelated. That despite the fact 'The Platinum Collection' was actually their highest selling compilation of both that week and the previous week.

In summary: streaming sales for compilation albums are a mess.

The OCC insisting on crediting ASIB as a cast recording is also pretty arbitrary, especially as the album is clearly tagged as being by Gaga & Bradley on both download and streaming platforms. There does exist a version of the album where the songs are padded out by dialogue tracks, a couple of which do feature neither artist, but there is also a version of the album available that doesn't have the dialogue tracks and on that version Gaga and/or Bradley are present (and credited) on every track.

In practice the OCC clearly aren't strict on the 'artist has to appear on every song' rule (once again proving that the OCC's rules are largely for show and they absolutely shouldn't be taken as gospel to the letter). Drake has at least 2 albums that contain songs where he doesn't appear at all and they were both allowed with no problems.
