Thermo's hot hits | #131-140 | EOD 2010-2019

Spotify playlist

140 Avicii & Sebastien Drums – My Feelings For You 1,276,200
30/08/2010 [EOY #52, 2010 / EOY #59, 2011]
28-29-37-x-15-14-9-7-5-15-3-2-5-10-16-20-16-16-20-41-x-45-49-x-13-38-49-x

What I said:
Didn't say anything here, this was from before I did proper commentary for all my top 100.

Further comment:
The first ever Avicii track to appear on my radar, and making my first ever chart making him one of the very few people to appear in my first and most recent chart (also in this list is Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Drake & Eminem). Avicii would go on to much greater things but this is still a highlight of his early work. Sebastien Drums never made any impact following this one song however.

139 Frenship – Capsize (feat. Emily Warren) 1,280,400
26/08/2016 [EOY #44, 2016 / EOY #93, 2017]
29-46-35-38-42-38-17-15-12-10-10-10-12-12-16-13-10-37-x-22-30-28-29-41-43-x

What I said:
This one took a long time to peak, one of the biggest growers in my chart this year though eventually spent four non-consecutive weeks at #10. Maybe it should've peaked higher. It's a brilliant song that leaves you wanting more though. Whilst Frenship's vocals aren't all that brilliant, Emily Warren's voice really fits the song so I'm glad she's very prominent in it. Would've been nice if this had actually gone beyond being a Spotify hit but it wasn't sent to radio.

Further comment:
A big one hit wonder here. I don't really love this song now, but it's great for what it is.

138 Nicki Minaj – Starships 1,284,900
20/02/2012 [EOY #07, 2012]
19-4-3-1-4-8-10-5-8-9-16-16-23-42-42-x-40-31-29-32-32-26-19-20-27-30-x

What I said:
Nicki has been in the EOY Top 10 before, in 2010 with the help of will.i.am. This year she returned back better than ever with the RedOne production "Starships". When I have learnt all of the rap just by listening to the song that's when you know I really love it! The chorus is very good too, but this is all just a buildup for the best part of the song - the drop in which RedOne delivers a hard beat in a different pitch to the rest of the song but somehow manages to fit in with the song (the old radio 1 edit that cut it out sounded very weird!)

Further comment:
It's Nicki's biggest song here, it has dated quite a bit however in comparison to other songs in this section but I did love it a lot at the time so its position is deserved in that respect.

137 Secondcity – I Wanna Feel (feat. Kelli-Leigh) 1,289,400
31/03/2014 [EOY #10, 2014]
38-43-50-42-3-8-15-15-18-3-6-7-12-25-23-17-25-30-45-x

What I said:
Starting off the top 10 is Secondcity and of course Kelli-Leigh (first of 2 entries for her in the top 10) with UK #1 smash I Wanna Feel, which did better in my chart than in the UK actually. A great house song with piano, and I love the change in the middle.

Further comment:
Secondcity would only have one other minor top 20 hit in my chart with this being his obvious standout.

136 Calvin Harris – Pray to God (feat. Haim) (Original/Calvin Harris vs. Mike Pickering Remix) 1,289,500
10/11/2014 [EOY #56, 2015]
7-13-19-31-22-21-10-34-x-45-x-45-34-27-14-17-22-38-26-22-32-x-50-x

What I said:
Calvin Harris entered highly upon the album's release with highlight 'Pray to God' but it was the remix which Calvin also had a hand in producing that kept it riding high in the chart well into the start of the year. I'd say I like the original and remix equally, both are very different for Calvin but in a good way. Combined it's become my favourite song of the 'Motion' era anyway so of course the rare Calvin flop had to be this.

Further comment:
Another track here helped a lot by having 2 great versions but put together this is a deserved position. I'd love to hear something like this from Calvin again but it probably won't happen now he's gone all rave and techno on us.

135 Loick Essien – How We Roll (feat. Tanya Lacey) 1,289,700
27/06/2011 [EOY #18, 2011]
23-28-10-6-7-7-2-2-8-9-12-17-22-37-x-45-28-47-x

What I said:
Most people on this forum would tell you this is a piece of forgettable R&B trash - but I actually really like it. Loick's singing reminds me of Taio Cruz in a good way, and the rapping by Tanya Lacey really adds to it even if it's really short (gotta love her accent). However Loick really disappointed me with follow up single Me Without You, which is one of the most boring generic R&B songs ever.

Further comment:
Another song here that has dated a fair bit over the years but it's better than people gave it credit for. He soon disappeared after his follow-up anyhow so it did become one of the most forgotten UK #2 hits of the decade.

134 Sandy Rivera – BANG! (feat. April) 1,294,500
08/12/2014 [EOY #11, 2015]
10-1-1-3-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-7-22-44-47-29-x-36-x

What I said:
Just missing out on the top 10 is 'BANG!' which served as the first Danaelandan BJSC entry of the year as well as being the #1 single for the first five weeks of the year. It is deep house at its finest, there's a nice guitar riff and a chilled out Robin Schulz style beat. What really brings it up to its standard is the vocals. April, who I can't find anything about thanks to her name does a really good job, and the 2nd verse where Sandy does vocal harmony is really lovely too.

Further comment:
This remains lovely, and would continue to be his only real hit with the follow-up only making my top 40 for 1 week.

133 Rihanna – Diamonds 1,302,600
01/10/2012 [EOY #38, 2012]
24-3-7-9-17-18-29-31-5-7-7-10-14-13-11-16-33-37-37-41-39-35-44-x

What I said:
I cannot count the number of times she says 'shine bright like a dymond' in the song, but it makes it very catchy. When this premiered I had my doubts about this, but it shortly became a massive global worldwide super smash hit and I grew to love it. With the help of Kanye West's remix of the song it recently jumped back into the top 10 of my chart. It is a reminder that Rihanna can pull off the urban sound and despite no club dance beats it is a great tune that we'll surely be hearing a lot of in new year's eve parties and countdowns of the top selling songs of the year.

Further comment:
One of her greats of the decade, it's her 6th highest appearance here - 4th excluding her guest appearances.

132 Nero – Guilt 1,303,000
04/04/2011 [EOY #21, 2011]
49-18-14-18-8-4-5-4-2-9-16-19-20-11-20-30-38-38-39-40-22-40-22-31-30-49-x

What I said:
Guilt has the same vocalist as M&Y and Promises who makes the song emotional with her lyrics. It took a long time to grow, but it just takes out M&Y as my favourite Nero song of the year.

Further comment:
It also just about manages to be their top seller of the decade and it was a big shame their follow up album didn't produce anything half as good.

131 Duke Dumont & Gorgon City – Real Life (feat. Naations) 1,303,700
09/06/2017 [EOY #25, 2017]
17-12-14-12-12-6-7-4-4-4-9-11-11-10-12-18-23-28-31-40-48-x

What I said:
I was very excited to see Duke Dumont and Gorgon City were to collab on a new single as both of their styles mix together well, and they certainly did not disappoint. Introducing singer Naations they brought out a proper bop which got a lot of love in the dance forum and even managed to become an official top 40 hit. A real return to form for both artists production wise, and I'd say it's my absolute favourite of Gorgon City's. More of these plz.

Further comment:
It is Gorgon City's top song and Duke Dumont's 2nd highest.

Recap:
140 Avicii & Sebastien Drums – My Feelings For You
139 Frenship – Capsize (feat. Emily Warren)
138 Nicki Minaj – Starships
137 Secondcity – I Wanna Feel (feat. Kelli-Leigh)

Thermo's hot hits | #121-130 | EOD 2010-2019

Spotify playlist

130 Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man – Giant 1,307,100
18/01/2019 [EOY #4, 2019]
1-1-2-2-2-1-1-1-1-2-2-2-6-7-7-7-11-24-29-40-43-x

What I said:
After 'One Kiss' reaching #2 in the 2018 EOY, Calvin Harris once again narrowly misses out on a year-end chart topper with 'Giant'. Released as his sole new song of the year, it gave him a very easy #1, eventually spending 6 weeks there after being interrupted by BJSC entry 'Rescue Me' for 3 weeks. It also brought Rag'n'Bone Man to the chart for the first time as I wasn't sold on any of his solo material. The two are a great match however, and I should never have doubted Calvin's ability to make anyone sound great because Rory is perfect for this song (and not only because he is an actual giant at 6"5 - as is Adam!). The song is very much tailored to the charts but Calvin once again proves himself as one of the best in this field, with a great brass hook in the drop - not something you usually get on a dancepop track! It also continued the relaxed vibe in the production that OK and Promises were going for, a sound I loved from him so it's a bit of a shame that he's already abandoned it and we never got an album with these songs on it. It's also a great song lyrically, I enjoy the giant metaphor for being there for someone who needs the support, and Rory really goes for it in the hook making it a real singalong moment. Whether anything from the Love Regenerator project can make it this high in the 2020 EOY remains to be seen, but for now this is the latest addition to my list of absolute fave Calvin tracks.

Further comment:
I don't think any further comment is needed! I said a lot!

129 Chase & Status – Blind Faith (feat. Liam Bailey) 1,313,200
13/12/2010 [EOY #32, 2011]
33-x-34-8-9-5-4-2-3-8-7-12-16-22-31-49-x

What I said:
Taking a big sample from "Love Sensation", this was the first C&S hit of 2011 - and really good it is too. This song proves that dub step can sound amazing when done right, the chorus is explosive! Liam Bailey is a good vocalist for this song, where has he gone now?

Further comment:
I'd say it's their best song now, but another song of theirs I loved a lot more at the time is still to come because of the points system.

128 Nadia Ali – Rapture (Avicii New Generation Remix) 1,314,600
02/01/2012 [EOY #59, 2012]
29-2-2-14-23-38-x-34-40-x-21-x

What I said:
"Rapture" was a song she sang in the early 00s as part of the band iio. Avicii gave it the remix treatment and I fell in love.

Further comment:
Surprised I ranked it so low that year, it now gets a more deserved position here. A brilliant remix here, and with Avicii remixes being so rare after he got big this is his highest in the rundown.

127 Imagine Dragons – Radioactive 1,317,100
31/12/2012 [EOY #18, 2013]
38-48-x-36-21-30-47-x-46-x-32-x-45-x-20-41-47-x

What I said:
And now for our first of two ~indie~ anthems, despite peaking at #20 in the weekly charts 'Radioactive' is the YE #18. With its dub step influences, powerful vocals and the anthemic feel, how was I not going to love this? It's also the first of 5 songs with over 100 last.fm plays (as of 11 December) to chart.

Further comment:
You may be surprised this song's this high but I did enjoy it a lot, and its very lengthy UK chart run helped a fair bit too. It's their highest entry by quite some distance including their Avicii collab.

126 David Guetta – Who's That Chick (feat. Rihanna) 1,336,000
27/09/2010 [EOY #26, 2010 / EOY #23, 2011]
5-14-19-27-29-27-34-37-40-27-1-2-5-8-5-3-5-3-7-13-18-21-20-13-11-9-12-14-19-16-22-29-33-37-50-x

What I said [2011]:
One of the longest runners in my chart ever, only to be beaten by "Only Girl", "S&M", "Party Rock Anthem" and "On The Floor" is David Guetta's collaboration with Rihanna. Her voice works perfectly well on a dance track and the fact she can do pop, dance, ballad and R&B shows her massive versatility. One of the greatest pop singers of this generation with one of the best producers of this generation - what is there not to love?

Further comment:
It's still one of the chart's longest runners in the top 50 region, although that isn't enough to hand it a top 100 position here. Still a great track though both have more to come (it's David's 3rd-highest entry and Rihanna's 5th-highest).

125 Yolanda Be Cool – Afronuts (D Cup Remix) 1,336,200
23/11/2018 – released 2009
20-21-x

What I said:
Nothing.

Further comment:
I discovered this one off a ministry of sound compilation in 2010, but I made it chart ineligible (I was trying to keep it to current mainstream hits only back then). It eventually got a top 20 peak after I sent it to BJSC (and it flopping massively). Certainly got overlooked there as it's a very funky tune! They will appear further up the chart with 'We No Speak Americano'.

124 CamelPhat & Cristoph – Breathe (feat. Jem Cooke) 1,344,000
23/11/2018 [EOY #6, 2019]
5-7-35-47-x-8-11-11-11-12-12-11-11-10-12-12-13-14-17-22-27-24-20-25-40-39-50-50-x

What I said:
After narrowly missing out on top 10 with 'Panic Room' due to bad timing, CamelPhat get 'Breathe' to #6 despite a peak of #8 for the tracking period (having entered at #5 just before December). It eventually became CamelPhat's 2nd biggest hit in my chart (although 'Cola' did narrowly out-do it for the EOD) and was also the first hit for both progressive house producer Cristoph and vocalist Jem Cooke. This is progressive house at its finest with great atmosphere and energy, and is probably the closest we'll ever get to having progressive trance back in the official chart too with it having a similar feel (and even one of Armin's latest tracks sounds similar to this). Follow-ups have been a bit disappointing but I'm still excited for that debut album, supposedly coming this year.

Further comment:
It is the third highest entry from CamelPhat, although I do prefer it to 'Cola' which is coming up shortly and would be ahead given more time.

123 Offaiah – Run 1,349,300
10/03/2017 [EOY #19, 2017]
46-23-19-13-12-10-13-17-20-19-22-28-37-46-x-46-x

What I said:
Following up the massive 'Trouble' I expected another big song to come and that we got in (unexpectedly an instrumental track) 'Run', well I mean big in my chart obviously this wasn't going to get a real chart push. It did eventually get a vocal mix but way too late and the original is far better anyway. It's very dancey and more of the unique offaiah sound so of course I was going to love it, even if it isn't quite as strong as 'Trouble' the song refused to age for me for quite a while, eventually having an even longer chart run (by two weeks). The striking piano mixed with the flute riff and deep house beats makes the song more than interesting enough, even if it's very repetitive.

Further comment:
Offaiah had no further big hits after this but it was great that he at least provided a few great tunes... under this alias that is - as he later revealed himself to be Michael Woods who had a #1 earlier in the decade and produced a track for Example which is yet to feature in this rundown.

122 Nora En Pure – Tell My Heart (feat. Dani Senior) 1,350,900
11/11/2016 [EOY #44, 2017]
22-10-7-3-2-2-25-47-13-20-24-26-28-28-28-34-33-36-35-x

What I said:
A beauty of a song here, that seems to be Nora's specialty as the production on this is brilliant. Though only reaching #62 as an instrumental it shot up to #2 following the vocal mix, which contrary to popular opinion on YouTube does in fact improve the song.

Further comment:
It's her 2nd highest entry with my BJSC entry 'Trailblazer' still to feature.

121 Croatia Squad & Lika Morgan – Make Your Move 1,351,400
20/05/2016 [EOY #10, 2016]
14-2-2-3-2-2-2-3-3-3-3-5-8-9-9-11-17-21-25-33-41-46-40-44-42-x

What I said:
Croatia Squad, who ironically isn't Croatian nor is a squad (being a Swiss DJ) teamed with singer Lika Morgan for a great deep house reworking of 'Make Your Move', most famously done by Junior Jack but originally a Pointer Sisters sample. It's ridiculously catchy and I love Morgan's ad-libs. Musically it's not that different to other songs of this genre, but it just does it so much better. It may have flopped in BJSC but I stand by it being my best entry of the year (and that does include Avicii's 'Dear Boy'!) because everything about it is just brilliant. Released on Enormous Tunes, I have to agree that it's an enormous tune.

Further comment:
'Ven Pa Ca' would be ahead of this now given the extra 2 months but this still sounds great.

Recap:
130 Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man – Giant
129 Chase & Status – Blind Faith (feat. Liam Bailey)
128 Nadia Ali – Rapture (Avicii New Generation Remix)
127 Imagine Dragons – Radioactive
126 David Guetta – Who's That Chick (feat. Rihanna)
125 Yolanda Be Cool – Afronuts (D Cup Remix)
124 CamelPhat & Cristoph – Breathe (feat. Jem Cooke)

All three of those are about equal for me, all deservingly in my top 200.
Pray To God was one of the most unjust chart flops of the decade and at a time when every other Calvin single went top 10 effortlessly.
thanks ~

there's a few more BJSC entries to come but I have to agree, it's had an insanely long chart run for me (and is still in my top 40).
it should've been Symphony that spent that long at #1 but this was great too.
it's one of the best of its style, Kygo can be really good when he wants to.
I think the song just generally has that effect, it took ages to peak in my chart.
thanks ~

Post Malone - Rockstar The only #1 in my charts from the past couple of sections. I'd have to agree that it's Post's best.
Loick Essien - How We Roll Very much a forgotten jam

glad we agree here, the general consensus seems to be that Circles is his best now which I can't agree with at all.
forgotten by me as well to some extent, I don't think i've given it many plays in the last few years.
thanks~

Thermo's hot hits | #111-120 | EOD 2010-2019

Spotify playlist

120 Watermät – Bullit 1,352,500
02/06/2014 [EOY #08, 2014]
50-2-4-15-35-32-26-27-33-x-45-50-x-37-39-39-30-21-18-10-10-10-22-37-x-48-45-x-45-x

What I said:
Songs don't come any more summery than this. Watermat at #8 with the highest charting instrumental of the year (kinda, as Gecko will be charting later in both versions). It's just so well produced and was deservedly one of the biggest club hits of the year, and even went top 10 in BJSC! Spent nearly half a year in my chart too, not bad at all.

Further comment:
Amazingly this is actually only his third highest entry here, although it's held up slightly better than the two of his to come, which benefitted from a better period for chart sales.

119 Wham! – Last Christmas 1,361,200
26/12/2011 [EOY #225, 2017 / EOY #241, 2019]
29-x-26-38-x-11-15-x-22-x-46-34-22-x-17-21-3-2-x-5-4-4-x-6-6-4-2-x-29-33-13-7-x

What I said [2017]:
This got a few extra plays after the unfortunate timing of George Michael's death. Even not considering that, this is still one of my favourites of the season.

Further comment:
A classic Christmas track that has grown on me throughout the course of the decade, and coincidentally it has near-identical sales to...

118 Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas Is You 1,361,400
20/12/2010
36-15-37-x-39-x-32-35-x-42-29-28-x-32-48-36-18-x-36-23-x-14-13-x-26-20-x-29-24-17-14-x-46-49-28-10-x

What I said:
Nothing.

Further comment:
It didn't even make the top 10 until last year thanks to its 25th anniversary celebrations (and me wanting to finally give it a top 10 peak) but it ranks in the top five Christmas songs in this rundown mostly thanks to it being a big presence for the entirety of the decade, but also because it's a terrific song despite the overplay.

117 Wiz Khalifa – Black and Yellow 1,367,400
24/01/2011 [EOY #12, 2011]
29-19-24-28-33-27-16-2-3-2-2-2-2-5-7-9-10-17-23-29-35-47-x-48-x

What I said:
The most unlucky #2 on my chart ever, spending 5 non-consecutive weeks at the position behind Rihanna's "S&M" and LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" - both of which are still to come on the chart. Onto the song, this is a brilliant US rap song from newcomer Wiz Khalifa. The song has a very catchy hook and some great rapping. As much as I love dance music, I can't not love a brilliant rap song.

Further comment:
A track that is rather forgotten nowadays, with a #2 weeks record that got broken twice since (6 weeks is the new record). It was definitely one of the best rap songs of its time anyhow.

116 Danny L Harle – 1UL 1,371,900
19/05/2017 [EOY #22, 2017]
10-11-14-9-8-9-7-10-10-13-14-12-10-17-19-22-23-22-29-36-42-49-x

What I said:
In a short chart history of just five top 40 hits he's had three of those make the year-end top 40, and he gets his highest position to date with '1UL'. Released to immediate love from the dance forum I of course had to check it out and the verdict was... yes this is proper amazing. The futuristic dance production blends in well with the vocals to make something that sounds like a big chart hit... in Buzzjack personal charts only that is, as we don't live in a world where Danny is a big name and this style of dance has broken through. Proper banger and big respect to Danny for making tunes like no-one else.

Further comment:
He hasn't really done much since this track sadly so this remains as his best.

115 Alan Walker – Faded (feat. Iselin Solheim) 1,375,200
01/01/2016 [EOY #09, 2016]
14-15-2-3-3-7-8-4-5-15-18-8-12-13-9-5-7-15-19-21-28-31-22-23-33-49-x

What I said:
Alan Walker's breakthrough single made a huge impact with me at the start of the year, it really was like nothing I'd heard before and so I was very impressed that it was quickly climbing Spotify. It eventually made the UK top 10 as well and became one of the year's biggest hit singles globally. Solheim has such a beautiful voice on this as well and it's got some great lyrics. Alan Walker is definitely someone I'm very excited about now, one of the year's best musical discoveries, and he's only the same age as me so he's got a great future ahead of him.

Further comment:
He never was able to top this predictably but continues to make good tunes.

114 Kiesza – Hideaway 1,384,200
17/03/2014 [EOY #07, 2014]
6-9-4-3-2-2-6-9-13-24-30-39-39-41-36-28-39-39-42-47-x

What I said:
A really well done song. The voice, the lyrics, the breakdown, everything about is just works so well. Taking me higher than I've ever been before, how apt! Really hope we get more goods from her soon.

Further comment:
She released a few more songs I enjoyed following 2014, including a Christmas song that went to #1 (just as it got taken off all platforms lol), but none came close to this in terms of sales.

113 CamelPhat & Elderbrook – Cola 1,384,800
01/09/2017 [EOY #75, 2017 / EOY #61, 2018]
30-11-7-5-5-5-5-5-5-9-15-20-28-39-39-43-x-32-35-40-x

What I said:
One of the bigger surprises of 2017 was CamelPhat actually getting a crossover hit single but 'Cola' quickly turned from club anthem to chart success. Now I've been following them for a few years now and particularly liked 'Paradigm' and 'Paths'. 'Cola' has even more of a deep house feel to it than previous singles of theirs though and it took me a few listens to really get it, but it's brilliant. The vocal tone really suits the lyrics, which are quite unusual for a dance hit and the production builds really well, even for the very subtle changes.

Further comment:
CamelPhat have just 'Panic Room' in contention for the Hottest 100 now.

112 Disclosure – White Noise (feat. AlunaGeorge) 1,389,200
04/02/2013 [EOY #11, 2013]
22-6-11-11-8-9-10-13-29-30-36-27-19-16-15-22-43-39-17-31-48-29-35-46-x

What I said:
Sadly missing out on a spot in the top 10 is Disclosure with their best song to date 'White Noise' which is just ahead of 'Latch' in my affections (the latter would probably be higher than #41 in this chart if it was released this year). Aluna isn't the greatest vocalist on their album but she does work on this song, the main highlight however is the production - although I do love the hook too. It's been great having them in the charts this year as they provide a different style of house, but sadly it's not enough to land a place in my top 10.

Further comment:
As it turns out 'Latch' is higher here, though it's still close between them and the two remain their best although they continue to release great tracks now, with them currently sitting at #2 with their latest Khalid collab.

111 Virtual Self – Ghost Voices 1,389,700
09/02/2018 [EOY #07, 2018]
36-21-19-20-19-4-2-4-4-6-5-31-10-10-13-15-18-21-27-40-x-19-9-9-9-16-22-31-x

What I said:
It had been ages since we'd had anything from Porter Robinson, with 4 years since his debut album and two since his last track 'Shelter', but it turned out that in late 2017 he made a low key comeback under the alias Virtual Self, which was brought to my attention when this song got sent to BJSC (though it eventually ended up on R1's playlist so I would have found out about it anyway). 'Ghost Voices' takes inspiration from dance tracks of the past but it sounds more futuristic than anything, and it is an incredibly inspired and well-produced dance track so unsurprisingly got a lot of love amongst dance fans (and even more unsurprisingly had no UK chart impact at all). Porter is so good at creating soundscapes in his tracks and this is one of his more uptempo tracks too which was so good to hear from him again. The track also leaped back into my top 10 following the release of his VIP which is also amazing (particularly the final section, that was a proper wow moment). I hope we get more of Porter Robinson as himself in 2019 though as it's been so long and I'm sure he has some amazing tracks just waiting to be released.

Further comment:
It is the 2nd highest entry from Porter with 'Language' still to feature in the Hottest 100. He has just recently made his comeback although with a disappointing track in my opinion.

Thermo's hot hits | #101-110 | EOD 2010-2019

Spotify playlist

110 Gareth Emery & Ashley Wallbridge – Amber Sun 1,392,300
19/04/2019 [EOY #02, 2019]
6-5-3-4-2-3-3-3-14-9-6-5-5-6-6-5-3-4-4-4-4-5-7-11-18-18-21-23-43-x-17-22-32-36-38-38-41-50-x

What I said:
Gareth Emery & Ashley Wallbridge just miss out on getting the year's #1 with one of the big trance anthems of the summer, but they have had a very impressive year. 'Amber Sun' was released during the Avicii era, which is the only reason it never made #1. It even going #2 with two Avicii singles out was impressive however, and it also managed a quick recovery following the release of 'Tim', eventually racking up 22 weeks in the top 10.

The song is completely instrumental but all the better for it. It's done so well here because for me it is quite simply trance music at its absolute best. It instantly grabs you with the guitar-esque pluck before the main synth leads come though like rays of sunshine. The highlight however is the anthemic and euphoric drop section that lasts for about half of the song. It's got a real drive to it and many layers of sound, with the track only getting better as it progresses.

With another album to be expected from Gareth this year, perhaps 2020 is the year he can get an EOY #1? For now, he'll have to settle for #2 behind the obvious pick (Avicii - Heaven).

Further comment:
Gareth is already off to a great 2020 with him currently sitting at #1 with 'Yesterday'. If 'Amber Sun' only had more time it would be firmly inside the top 100.

109 Madeon – Icarus 1,394,500
06/02/2012 [EOY #28, 2012]
20-35-24-37-2-4-6-3-2-7-7-8-21-21-33-x

What I said:
French teenage DJ Madeon couldn't have had a better debut single. This instrumental track opens up with crashing synths in what could be described as the best intro in dance music of the whole year. And it doesn't end there, a minute into the song the beat drops with some Wolfgang Gartner style synths. Later in the song we hear the synths from the intro and the beat from the drop come together - what's not to love in this perfect dance song! Oh and did you know he's only 18! And he's French! I think we've found ourselves the next David Guetta.

Further comment:
The next David Guetta he wasn't, as he never was able to top this effort for me. His latest album was better than Guetta's latest however.

108 Jessie J – Domino 1,399,200
26/12/2011 [EOY #19, 2012]
23-39-6-1-3-3-13-14-10-11-14-21-26-33-33-33-23-21-20-20-24-41-46-x-44-x

What I said:
Jessie J may have been quieter this year, but with the deluxe version of Who You Are came this massive tune that topped my charts early last year. Jessie has been the target of many hate comments during this and LaserLight, many people calling her a sellout and making generic songs just to please the Americans - but I really loved this, one of the catchiest songs of the year and, like Rita a few places earlier in the countdown, makes a Katy Perry song better than she can herself. Clearly the Dr Luke/Max Martin sound suits her more than the David Guetta production.

Further comment:
It is Jessie's biggest single in the rundown.

107 Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso – Calling (Lose My Mind) (feat. Ryan Tedder) (Instrumental/Vocal Mix) 1,401,200
02/01/2012 [EOY #22, 2012]
27-33-29-21-8-6-15-20-21-30-38-x-50-x-42-23-27-46-46-49-38-30-30-29-44-41-45-x-38-42-48-x

What I said:
Spending a mammoth 28 weeks in the chart, it is one of the longest runners of the year. I first discovered it on Ministry of Sound compilation album "The Annual 2012" and it was an instant highlight. The entry into BJSC and its UK release kept my love for this song going and it was also a festival anthem, it got everyone jumpin'!

Further comment:
It is the biggest single for Sebastian Ingrosso (outside of SHM) and Alesso.

106 Calvin Harris & Sam Smith – Promises 1,412,900
24/08/2018 [EOY #58, 2018 / EOY #28, 2019]
2-2-2-3-3-4-5-5-5-4-3-3-6-8-5-11-23-x-22-17-18-22-26-29-36-42-33-30-38-36-x

What I said:
What a year it has been for Sir Sir Calvin Harris, who spent 14 weeks at #1 in the UK this year, six of those with this. In my chart however it was one of the unluckiest #2s of the year as it was released in the same week as Jess Glynne's 'All I Am' (which does appear higher in the countdown). It's a very smooth dance track, which plods along in the best possible way, and seems to be Calvin's style at the moment; and perfect as an end of summer track to follow the summer anthem that was 'One Kiss' (we'll get to that a lot later on). Calvin as my second favourite act of all time only seems to cement that position with every big single he does and I trust that he'll make Rag'n'Bone Man sound good on his next single that should be out a week from now (excitement!). You all know this song anyway so I needn't explain more. Just another solid tune from Calvin which sounds effortless, but no one makes music quite like him.

Further comment:
It narrowly misses out on being Sam Smith's top single, which is 'Latch'. Calvin has a few more to go of course.

105 Disclosure – Latch (feat. Sam Smith) 1,415,900
15/10/2012 [EOY #41, 2013]
22-7-35-31-15-19-12-18-38-19-26-29-21-28-34-27-31-32-37-32-16-38-x-40-48-x-33-34-26-x

What I said:
It wasn't the first song I heard of theirs but it was the first one that I took proper notice of and loved. Their music has an element of style to it and it's clear that this song doesn't just appeal to the EDM community but has massive cross-appeal. Indie, urban and pop fans were all loving Disclosure this year!

Further comment:
It is Disclosure's top track in the rundown, despite its missing the year-end top 40 due to timing (before I made December the beginning of the tracking year).

104 Duke Dumont – Need U (100%) (feat. A*M*E) 1,428,400
25/03/2013 [EOY #14, 2013]
19-12-1-4-6-8-15-17-16-18-16-16-18-17-17-24-19-20-37-44-43-x

What I said:
Now we have a feel-good tune from newcomer Duke Dumont and his breakthrough single, and only UK chart hit to date, although that will change when he releases 'I Got U'. (he must love the letter U). With the 90s meets 2013 production, the humming of uncredited vocalist MNEK and the demanding lyrics from A*M*E, it was the tune that kept on giving, with 17 of its 22 charting weeks being spent in the top 20.

Further comment:
It is Duke Dumont's top track here.

103 Storm Queen – Look Right Through (MK Remix) (feat. Damon C. Scott) 1,433,900
09/09/2013 [EOY #06, 2013]
8-5-7-14-22-14-2-8-5-1-2-3-4-9-14-13-7-13-23-43-45-x

What I said:
Sadly just missing out on the top 5 is Storm Queen and MK with 'Look Right Through'. Originally a 2011 song for Storm Queen, it got the MK treatment in 2012, and finally became a hit in 2013. It's by far the highest deep house song in the countdown, and with the soulful vocals of the officially uncredited vocalist and the catchy bassline from MK, there was no way I wasn't going to love this!

Further comment:
Storm Queen never had another hit or even released anything. MK is still to come with a few songs.

102 Jess Glynne – All I Am 1,438,900
24/08/2018 [EOY #44, 2018 / EOY #34, 2019]
1-1-1-2-2-3-3-2-1-2-2-2-3-4-4-10-22-x-21-15-15-17-23-26-30-31-35-33-37-35-49-x

What I said:
2018 was Jess' best year since 2014 when she broke through and she did very well to avoid the 'sophomore slump', with four #1s scored in the year, the first artist to do so since Avicii in 2015. 'All I Am' however was the only instant #1, beating fierce competition from other new releases by Calvin Harris and Disclosure, and it returned to #1 following the album release. It sees Jess go back to her roots with a great lite house beat, helped by the 'Finally' sample which works really well here. The easy comparison to make is with 'Hold My Hand', but contrary to popular opinion I consider this to be just as good if not better. It's a very uplifting and danceable song with a great vocal which is just what the charts need a bit more of. The lyrics are simple but effective, the beat is groovy, Jess is an outstanding vocalist, it ticks all the boxes.

Further comment:
Jess has two more to come as a featured artist.

101 Seeb – Breathe (feat. Neev) 1,439,700
18/03/2016 [EOY #07, 2013]
16-2-3-4-3-2-2-2-2-2-3-7-8-15-24-26-27-28-43-41-37-44-37-38-41-x

What I said:
This was unlucky enough to spend six weeks at #2 behind three different songs. After the Mike Posner remix I was excited for what SeeB had next, and it made a great first impression. After a few listens I knew I'd like this even more and it shows. For a dance track it's so simple yet emotional which is what I really love about it. It's got a lush melody and lovely vocalist, and such a unique way of bringing together progressive house elements with their signature vocal pitching effects and chill production. The only explanation for this not receiving a chart push is that simply it's too good for the British public to handle.

Further comment:
Big shame that this just misses out (and I'd want to put most of this section in the top 100 too), it's still Seeb's best as they went rapidly downhill after this track. It also still holds the record for most weeks at #2 for a non-#1.

Recap:
110 Gareth Emery & Ashley Wallbridge – Amber Sun

136 - I like both about equally, they're both great
135 - it was rather surprising it went #2 and spent a few weeks in the top 10, although it bombed a bit once it left
126 - it does seem that way
117 - I always forget it was stargate produced. it won't be the last we see of stargate here anyway.

115 - it was amazing it did so well, it's still one of the most streamed on spotify and youtube ever too
114 - it was so good, that time was amazing for dance hits
thanks ~

Breathe is an absolute tune, would have been nice to see it sneak into your Top 100 but fantastic to see it so high nonetheless.

Icarus, Promises, Need You (100%) and All I Am are also favourites from that section!

Thermo's hot hits | #091-100 | EOD 2010-2019

Spotify playlist

100 Skrillex – Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites 1,451,700
07/11/2011 [EOY #66, 2011]
14-20-32-29-18-4-6-20-19-28-22-36-38-x

What I said:
At #66 is "Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites" which is over a year old but I only got into his music recently. This year he's been getting more and more hype and becoming massive on the internet, even in the USA. It's surprising that the song hasn't touched the UK T100, because it has over 50 million views on youtube.

Further comment:
A bit surprised it made it this high, though its low EOY position was from it being split between years. It remains Skrillex's best effort anyhow.

99 Awolnation – Sail 1,452,700
24/06/2013 [EOY #05, 2013]
14-20-47-40-4-9-12-20-x-38-x-50-x-46-x-44-x-30-27-16-2-4-4-4-2-12-25-36-x

What I said:
Starting the top 5 is the highest non-EDM song in the chart, the brilliant breakthrough hit for Awolnation. I love how the song builds up throughout, at the start we've got just the riff but by the end we have added drums and a guitar. The guy in the song sings as if he's shouting, but with lyrics like 'maybe I should kill myself?' this effect works well and shows his pain. And it's a proper grower, its chart run in both the UK and US reflecting this, as well as my chart.

Further comment:
One of the chart's biggest ever complete one hit wonders as I don't think I've ever bothered to listen to another of their songs oops.

98 Disciples – On My Mind 1,453,200
21/04/2017 [EOY #18, 2017]
50-22-23-20-16-18-19-23-20-22-24-30-26-25-26-24-24-34-35-32-40-41-47-48-x

What I said:
Disciples got a surprise UK chart hit with 'On My Mind' which of course brought them back into my personal chart and not only that but giving them their biggest ever hit despite being their first chart entry to miss the top 10 (previous release 'Daylight' however missed the entire chart). It just goes to show that a well produced bop can go very far and this really is brilliant. From the groovy bassline to the hooks all over the track, it was great watching this turn into a proper hit and it was one of the year's best. Follow-up 'Jealousy' wasn't half as good but still managed to be a minor chart hit here so I have hope for them in 2018.

Further comment:
Disciples went very much downhill afterwards but this remains a proper tune and their best effort including their Calvin song.

97 Elektronomia & JJD – Free 1,458,400
03/11/2017 [EOY #9, 2018]
32-45-28-22-16-16-19-22-x-12-9-10-11-18-21-30-25-22-15-12-9-9-7-10-12-x-21-25-28-31-30-31-41-x

What I said:
Now here's a song that most likely passed you by unless you remember it from BJSC, where it was one of my least successful entries of the year, however still one of my favourites. It is the first of two complete instrumentals that appear in the top 10, and was brought to my attention through JJD's TheFatRat connection (their 'Prelude' made the 2017 EOY top 40) which led me to skim JJD's other singles on Spotify. Many of them sounded similar but it was this that really caught my attention, a co-production with Elektronomia who takes lead credit. It maintains a somewhat housey and bouncy feel but is also very glitch-hop influenced (for now I've categorised it as 'electronic dance' as I'm not really sure what sub genre this really fits into), and has a strong beat and great melody. There's not much more to it really but it held up really well with repeated listens giving it a nice and long chart run.

Further comment:
Another 1HW here in Elektronomia, and JJD hasn't done much in my chart since either.

96 Bastille – Pompeii 1,462,500
04/03/2013 [EOY #35, 2013]
19-2-5-7-7-13-19-21-30-38-49-x-32-46-x

What I said:
Bastille impressed me with this song which was their first big UK chart smash, a well-written song which has the right mix of pop and indie vibes in it. It was nice to see this be such a hit as it's good to have variety in the charts, and when an indie song is done very well, it will get love from me - sadly this isn't the case most of the time which is why my chart is dominated by EDM.

Further comment:
Very much still is Bastille's best song and a deserved massive hit for them. It is helped a bit by a few remixes here too.

95 Lucas & Steve – Up Till Dawn (On The Move) 1,467,500
26/05/2017 [EOY #16, 2017]
12-9-7-7-7-5-5-3-3-6-6-5-11-13-18-21-30-45-x

What I said:
Everything about this screams summer jam, and with it sampling one of my favourite ever trance songs 'On The Move' I was of course going to love it. BJSC fans will note that this is another of my entries of 2017. It's a cross between tropical and laidback house which ultimately delivers as a great chart-friendly bop, though I believe it only touched the Dutch charts, where Lucas & Steve are from. It may be a bit on the generic side but when it's this good, I can look way past that.

Further comment:
They've been one of the biggest Spinnin Records acts in my chart in the decade and this was their top effort.

94 Loreen – Euphoria 1,472,500
12/03/2012 [EOY #33, 2012]
12-5-1-3-8-10-17-40-40-43-x-7-x

What I said:
The winner of this year's Eurovision appears at #33. The yearly event never fails to bring up crap songs and eurocheese, but this year came with an exception. This song sounded very 2012 and I got right behind it, so did the UK when it won - climbing all the way to #1 on iTunes and #3 officially. Loreen's vocals suit the dance production very well, and whilst she may not quite deserve the massive overhyping that Buzzjack has given her, she does deserve for this song to be sucessful as it's very good.

Further comment:
It remains very easily the biggest Eurovision hit of the decade and Loreen's biggest, though she did well to get a few more hits in my chart though none appear in this rundown.

93 Jax Jones – Instruction (feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don) 1,473,800
23/06/2017 [EOY #24, 2017]
1-1-2-2-2-2-2-2-8-8-9-9-11-16-22-26-28-29-24-37-40-x

What I said:
From Duke Dumont to Jax Jones, and who'd have thought that Jax Jones would go on to be even bigger than Duke when 'I Got U' came out? 'Instruction' was of course the follow-up to the huge hit 'You Don't Know Me', still to come in this countdown, and the song instantly went to #1 just from the excitement of having another Jax single before being knocked off two weeks later by Calvin Harris. Which also means we have the odd statistic of Demi Lovato being one of the few people to have a single enter at #1, despite her being one of my least favourite singers. It's fair to say she doesn't ruin this song at all though (as I feared) with her sassy vocals fitting the song's vibe, and the lack of screeching that made 'Sorry Not Sorry' my least favourite hit single of the year. The Stefflon verse is great too and the unique production from Jax really makes this song so infectious. To date it is his only #1 as follow-up 'Breathe' has so far only managed to peak at #4, though at its current rate it looks likely to make the 2018 EOY so this should be another great year for him.

Further comment:
It is the first of 3 hottest 100 entries for Jax, including 'Breathe' and 'You Don't Know Me'.

92 Leona Lewis – One More Sleep 1,475,200
16/12/2013 [EOY #244, 2017 / EOY #233, 2018 / EOY #183, 2019]
17-22-x-47-x-40-12-x-17-9-x-25-23-2-3-x-24-2-2-2-x-2-5-1-1-x-43-15-4-3-1-x

What I said:
This song has aged brilliantly and is up there with my ultimate seasonal faves now. It finally made #1 after many years and it could potentially get there again. Great to see it becoming a definite future Christmas classic anyhow.

Further comment:
It is 1 of 2 Christmas songs in the hottest 100, and would be my highest easily had it been released earlier in the decade.

91 Watermät – Won't Stop (feat. Kelli-Leigh) 1,478,800
12/05/2017 [EOY #20, 2017]
40-24-8-10-8-9-12-8-11-13-14-15-15-16-23-23-27-34-36-x

What I said:
Starting off the top 20 is Snakey fave and the new sponsor of Wednesdays in the shoutbox, Watermät! I never thought he'd make something as good as 'Bullit' again so to do it twice in one year was very impressive. This one featuring queen of dance music Kelli-Leigh was quietly released on Spinnin' Deep and only got my attention a few weeks later, but quickly exploded on my chart. It's a brilliantly produced track and very dancey as you'd expect from Watermät. A proper upbeat dance bop despite being deep house, a genre that seems to have faded a bit sadly but it's good to see Watermät hasn't disappeared like others from his era.

Further comment:
It is the first of 2 Watermät tracks in the hottest 100.

Recap:
100 Skrillex – Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites
99 Awolnation – Sail
98 Disciples – On My Mind
97 Elektronomia & JJD – Free
96 Bastille – Pompeii
95 Lucas & Steve – Up Till Dawn (On The Move)
94 Loreen – Euphoria

I prefer Breathe to my #100 now so yeah it would've been, but for now I'll stick to the point system - I may post a chart based on how I feel it should be later but I like that this method takes into account what I also used to really like.

Breathe was helped a fair bit by its chart run points too, it would be #121 if it was based on playcount alone (alternatively it'd be #63 based on chart run points without playcount).

thanks guys ~

Nice to see Up Till Dawn so high, another fantastic BJSC entry from you. Was also great to see Disciples get another chart hit in On My Mind but sad that they've basically disappeared since, the little music they've released recently hasn't really 'grabbed' me as you've said. Nice to see Sail, Euphoria & Pompeii here as well!
