It's 35 years since 'Angel' was released in the US as the third single from Like a Virgin. It's a sweet, giggly pop tune, an ode to a heavenly love and a light introduction to Madonna's use of religious imagery in her work. It was another commercial success for Madonna, achieving Top 5 in the US and in the UK when it was released later in the year, as well as enjoying a run at #1 in Australia where it was a double A-side with 'Into the Groove'. A music video had been planned but the idea was scrapped due to Madonna already having heavy rotation of five other videos and another may not have worked in her favour. Nevertheless, a promotional video containing clips from previous music videos was compiled and played in the UK. 35 years on, what are your thoughts and memories of 'Angel'? |

It's a very cute song. Returned to me last year with its inclusion in Stranger things! Again, like most of the album, it's not a favourite and one I return to by choice often but it's always sweet when I hear it. I am gutted we never received a proper video for it, I can imagine she could've showcased yet more iconic looks and costumes for this era!

Honestly, the lack of a video probably killed it as "classic" single - had it had one I imagine it would be far more remembered than it is today.
These days it's sort of forgotten despite it being a hit in its own right. |

This and 'Dress You Up' are my standouts from Like a Virgin. A fun, charming song that's kinda all the more special for being uncomplicated.
Would have been nice to have received a video. It was a genuine hit and deserved to appear on a compilation album, but I think it was left to be forgotten due to the lack of video and how quickly they moved on ('Gambler' replaced it in the Top 10). 1985 really was a jam-packed year for Madonna - a then-record eight Top 10 (Top 5, in fact) hits in a calendar year, including a continuous run in the Top 10 from June to November. Quite extraordinary that Madonna was one of the main faces of early MTV when only one single this year received a "proper" video. |
