So the Dannii ‘Girl’ thread turned into a bit of a discussion about Dannii’s second album ‘Get Into You’.

After the success of Dannii’s debut album which had 4 Top 20 singles, and itself reached the Top 10 and was certified gold they apparently she wanted a different direction for GIY.

Singles:

Show You The Way To Go (July 1992)
UK Chart Run: 30-34-61.

Loves On Every Corner (December 1992)
UK Chart Run: 44-53-62-74.

This Is It (July 1993)
UK Chart Run: 15-11-10-10-15-22-36-58.

This Is The Way (October 1993)
UK Chart Run: 27-38-63.

Get Into You (June 1994)
UK Chart Run: 39-53-84. (This originally had a #36 peak until the OCC downgraded it a few years ago)

The campaign was thwarted from the start - with the lead track being from an anniversary celebration of The Jackson’s, after this failed to set the charts alight they waited 5 months to release the follow up LOEC co-written by Cathy Dennis (And featuring her on backing), the song got totally lost in the Christmas market and it’s 4 week chart run which was rare at the time especially for a non Top 40 hit suggests it could’ve been a hit had it been released at a different time.

After the initial lack of success we waited a further 7 months for single #3 which was TII which of course returned Dannii to her pop roots and the Top 10, this was followed 3 months later with TITW which peaked at #27 and the album was released a few weeks later and slumped in at #52.

Randomly 8 months later ‘Get Into You’ was released as a single by Mushroom records (Seemingly Dannii had parted ways with MCA at this point), Dannii/Mushroom obviously had some confidence an old album track was a winner however it entered at #36 (Although this was downgraded 2 years ago by the OCC to #39) and that was the end of a random, ill managed GITY project which saw Dannii’s personal style and music change totally throughout the campaign.

Thoughts on the album? Which songs should have been singles? Are there any album tracks that were criminally overlooked?

I always wonder if they had started with This Is It, then Loves On Every Corner or This Is The Way if it would have given Dannii a decent level of success.

'This Is It' is of course gold, but I think 'This Is The Way' is really underrated! (Particularly the extended version).

I do kind of like 'Get Into You' as well actually, I would love to know what the deal was with the peak downgrade.

Did Dannii promote anything on this apart form TII ?

No interviews / performances on you tube for this era? (Hardly)

This era totally passed me by.

As many of said they release strategy from the label was terrible . However this could have been because the first two singles did not do well.

I Dream is one of my faves on the album.
The production on SUTWTG is nice.

If you really is another highlight . Easily my least fav album.

Yes Dannii promoted during this era - LMSYTWTG was part of an NME charity album (NME was not the right audience for a Dannii cover but I guess that was part of her trying to move into ‘adult’ music).

LOEC has decent promo on children’s TV plus The Word - it’s not her strongest track but I think of it had been released at any other point it would have been a hit but Christmas was totally the wrong time for it.

TII and TITW had really good promo too, I don’t remember anything for GIY - it seemed to appear out of nowhere and was a really random release so long after the album had tanked.

Dannii’s performance of LOEC from The Word - I guess looking back her image didn’t match the song and she moved on so quickly from the bubble gum pop star of her first era without really establishing herself as an artist.

The chorus for Loves on Every Corner is ok.
This is It remains one of Dannii's stand out moments.
The album is lost on me with sound, it is a, any sound will do album and I don't enjoy most of the material I have heard from it.
I have never purchased the actual album just listened online

The only reason why I can figure the Get Into You release happened was because she married Julian in early 1994 and got a lot of press for it. I guess they thought she might have a chance to get back into radio promoters good graces? Either that or it was some sort of contract thing where either MCA had to release an x amount of singles from Get Into You or maybe there was a penalty involved a la Britney's Radar if it wasn't put out as a single.

All good points - I’d love to know the reason behind it, it was also released via Mushroom Records rather than MCA, whatever the reason I’m glad it just managed to scrape the Top 40.

GIY was released as a single to promote the GIY VHS release.

Not exactly the same promo for the l&k era , no morning tv , no kids tv shows , no TOTP etc .

In those days promotion was needed on shows such as these for an artist like Dannii to achieve chart hits.

She was on TOTP twice with TII - the other songs didn’t chart highly enough to get her a place on the show.

She done kids TV too - What’s Up Doc, O-Zone etc.,

Also she was in Australia quite a bit during this era as TII became a hit and she was obviously keen to build on that.

To be honest she struggled after the final single from Love & Kisses stalled at #40 and then the first 2 singles from Get Into You reached #30 and #44 - there were an abundant of successful pop singers ready to fill gaps on TV shows and Dannii wasn’t getting the hits so therefore it made it harder for her to get the decent promo slots.

With it tying into the era, was her initial marriage to Julian met positively.
I know Dannii suffered some bad press once the split was announced.
Get Into You was an era formed through her time with Julian so in Australia her name would have got higher press than usual.

Exactly her marriage was more of a priority and you can’t blame her for that.

The promo was poor is my point compared to her first era.

She did perform 'Get Into You' on one of these types of shows and there was an interview with her discussing the single before the performance. I watched it on YouTube a few months ago, but annoyingly now I can't find it!

I'll keep looking...

Very understandable, although, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Neon Nights showed Dannii could succeed, it was her first album that people understood Dannii.
Girl and Get Into You lacked that identity when they were released.

As I'm old enough to have been around at the time I do remember dannii not having a great vibe around her, the fact her and kylie were never spotted together fuelled the rumours they didnt get on and I think that damaged dannii's chances of succes. It didnt help that the music wasnt great either. Dannii needed that big stand out single and it never happened or even came anywhere close during the get into you time.

^ agreed

I have just stuck the album on. Get Into You as a song is very good . As someone said in another thread it really does remind you of Black Cat

I’m enjoying it more than I ever did. Put your headphones on.

Best Tracks
This Is It
Get Into You
This Is The Way
Be Careful
I Dream
If You Really
Show You The Way To Go
Kiss And Make Up

So I’m actually liking more than half of it.
Great production and vocal moments.

Wish that you stop wishing goes on and on and on !!
Tonight’s temptation & until we meet again are the weakest.
