10th May 2020
it's straight in at 1 for Kraftwerk, following the loss of Ralf Hutter in a terrible week or so for veteran pop star losses: The Model was originally released in it's German-language version in 1978, but didn't get to chart in the UK until this English-language version was released in 1981 on the B side of Computer Love. The Model got the airplay, and topped the UK charts in early 1982 and peaked at 2 in my charts, and belatedly now tops my chart 39-years later, cos it's fab. Autobahn is also back 45 years since it went top 10 in all it's ground-breaking glory. Also in the charts at the same time as The Model was Golden Brown, The Stranglers most-famous track, which hit UK 2 and also fell-short of topping my chart until a 90's re-issue did the trick. Following the loss of co-writer & keyboardist extraordinaire Dave Greenfield to coronavirus it's back in the top 10 for a third occasion, along with No More Heroes, a fab punk anthem that charted in 1977 as I started uni, in at 61, and Nice 'n' Sleazy at 50 from 1978. I could easily have charted many others of their long list of great singles though... Inside the 40, Regard and Raye climb briskly into the top 20, shhh it's a Secret, while The Rolling Stones get a first top 40 for 8 years with the lockdown anthem, Rumer returns to the top 40, and Blossoms make it a 4th, and Fisher Freaks out at 40 as the original Le Freak returns at 60 with Rebecca Ferguson, her 5th chart entry some 7 years since her last one, and Nile Rodgers umpteenth to extend his run to over 42 years. Highest new track is Cher's Spanish-language UNICEF-charity cover of Chiquitita, a sensitive cover of Abba's UNICEF-profiting original from 1979 - she's not the oldest-charting living female-singer with original material (that's Doris Day aged 89 in 2011 - but it was originally recorded in the 80's) so at 73 technically she pips Doris as oldest female with newly-recorded-new-material, and extends her run of solo charted entries to 49 years (or 55 years had I been charting in 1965, I adored I Got You Babe as a kid). Another charity track by Ariana & Justin pops in at 63, Stuck With U giving Ms Grande 6 years of activity and Mr Bieber 8 years. The Fratellis comeback extends to 2 with a bit of an assist from minor soul-legend P.P. Arnold still on form on her second track of her rebirth after her first comebacks on dance tracks of the 80's and 90's from her original chart-runs in 1968, just predating my charts. New Order pop in with single remix of a 2010's album track that I'd missed, Doves are back with Brazil, 11-years absent, to give them a 7th chart entry and an 18-year run. Finally Millie Small's My Boy Lollipop returns to the chart over 30-years since it went top 10, following her passing, but young Millie's fab-ska classic was an obsession by 6-year-old me back in 1964, so might as well say it was a chart-topper 56 years ago. Little Richard also died this week, the influential rock 'n' roll revolutionary charted for me right into the late 80's, but his 1955 showstopping debut Tutti Frutti has never charted before, so it pops in as tribute 65 years late. 1 NEW 1 1 THE MODEL Kraftwerk 170000 2 2 2 3 THE LAKE Galantis & Wrabel 295000 3 1 1 7 LEVITATING Dua Lipa 827100 4 3 2 7 BREAK MY HEART Dua Lipa 442400 5 6 5 9 CAUTION The Killers 367550 6 4 2 13 NO TIME TO DIE Billie Eilish 743500 7 NEW 7 1 GOLDEN BROWN The Stranglers 50000 8 5 1 11 SAY SO Doja Cat 819600 9 9 9 7 DANCING NEXT TO ME Greyson Chance 186400 10 10 10 8 WHO I AM Melanie C 210500 11 7 7 14 I DON’T WANNA Pet Shop Boys 269550 12 12 12 6 I’LL WAIT Kygo & Sasha Sloan 118800 13 8 6 10 MISTAKES Jonas Blue & Paloma Faith 312700 14 15 14 7 SPOTLIGHT Jessie Ware 137050 15 11 11 10 LOST AT SEA Cashier No.9 242150 16 38 16 3 SECRETS Regard & Raye 48600 17 17 17 7 ANTISOCIAL SOCIALITES Kyan Palmer, nicopop & Yuri Joness 114300 18 27 18 9 HARVEST MOON Neil Young 118650 19 20 19 7 IN YOUR EYES The Weeknd 81800 20 14 1 14 TEARS OF GOLD Faouzia 1013000 21 13 4 11 THE WHOLE 9 Marina Kaye 414850 22 18 18 13 LA VIE EN ROSE Louis Armstrong 197850 23 16 9 10 MURPHY’S LAW Roisin Murphy 267550 24 26 24 6 HOLD ON, WE’RE GOING HOME Nerina Pallot 81900 25 36 25 4 WHO YOU LOVIN’ LEON 54450 26 19 6 12 MODERN LONELINESS Lauv 349000 27 28 27 7 STORM The Fizz 69700 28 40 28 4 LEAN ON ME UB40 featuring Ali Campbell & Astro 45900 29 21 12 9 GOLIATH Smith & Thell 169250 30 22 15 10 WHO Lauv featuring BTS 169400 31 25 25 7 BLUE SKIES Music from Star Trek: Picard featuring Isa Briones 114200 32 29 29 6 THE MAN Taylor Swift 77300 33 33 33 7 RESERVATION The Fizz 60150 34 48 34 3 LIVING IN A GHOST TOWN The Rolling Stones 37100 35 35 35 7 LIMITLESS Richard Marx 66400 36 37 36 3 NEW BOY Pet Shop Boys 46450 37 23 23 10 SOMETIMES Kodaline 124950 38 42 38 3 HARD TIMES FOR LOVERS Rumer 37750 39 46 39 4 IF YOU THINK THIS IS REAL LIFE Blossoms 46050 40 53 40 8 FREAKS Fisher 71850 41 24 24 10 LOOK AFTER YOU Aron Wright 127050 42 52 42 4 I LOVE YOU NOW CHANGE Twinnie 41150 43 43 43 4 THE GREATEST James Blunt 43000 44 31 19 10 ALL OF THE FEELINGS Kiesza 168700 45 30 30 9 KINGS & QUEENS Ava Max 100150 46 54 46 4 I CONTAIN MULTITUDES Bob Dylan 33950 47 32 1 14 I’M GONNA LOVE YOU JUST A LITTLE MORE BABY Barry White 1285550 48 56 48 3 IF YOU’RE TOO SHY (LET ME KNOW) The 1975 26900 49 49 1 23 BLINDING LIGHTS The Weeknd 1414650 50 NEW 50 1 NICE ‘N’ SLEAZY The Stranglers 12000 51 34 2 14 HALFWAY James Blunt featuring Ward Thomas 530550 52 39 39 7 BOYFRIEND Mabel 64900 53 62 53 3 TIMES LIKE THESE Live Lounge Allstars 24250 54 61 54 3 HOUSE PARTY New Kids On The Block featuring BoyzIIMen, Big Freedia, Naughty By Nature & Jordin Sparks 23500 55 63 55 3 DIAGNOSIS Alanis Morrissette 22200 56 NEW 56 1 AUTOBAHN Kraftwerk 10600 57 60 57 7 GHOST TOWN The Specials 52400 58 NEW 58 1 CHIQUITITA (SPANISH VERSION) Cher 10200 59 50 3 15 THERAPY Duke Dumont featuring Sharlene Hector 548900 60 NEW 60 1 NOTHING LEFT BUT FAMILY Rebecca Ferguson featuring Nile Rodgers 10000 61 NEW 61 1 NO MORE HEROES The Stranglers 7500 62 64 62 3 THE BUZZ Pretenders 19300 63 NEW 63 1 STUCK WITH U Ariana Grande & Justin Bieber 7200 64 59 59 4 LIGHT OF LOVE Florence + The Machine 27400 65 41 9 11 THE OTHER SIDE SZA, Justin Timberlake 275600 66 69 66 4 JUST THE TWO OF US Grover Washington Jr & Bill Withers 24000 67 NEW 67 1 STRANGERS IN THE STREET The Fratellis featuring P.P. Hi John!
Nice to see the big gains for "Secrets" and "Living In A Ghost Town" and the debuts for "Level Of Concern" and "Tutti Frutti" (RIP Little Richard). Great chart! |

The Model is a good tune, I have also listened to the Trans-Europe Express album by Kraftwerk and it is very good.
Secrets is one of the best dance tracks in a while, the instrumental drop in it after the chorus is definitely a bit 80s electro-disco. |

Hi John!
The Model is a great song, nice to see it become a posthumous #1 for you. In fact a whole set of posthumous entries with The Stranglers, Kraftwerk and My Boy Lollipop, it really hasn't been a good week for music has it On a more positive note I'm really liking Level of Concern, I didn't listen to it until yesterday as I just assumed it wouldn't be my thing but it is pretty funky! Great chart |

Thanks for the comment & I must listen to Trans Europe Express (I've never heard it, shockingly, outside the singles! ) Secrets has grown on me rapidly, love a great dance track me, I need to be in a club again instead of locked indoors |

RIP Great chart Hi Jordan! Billie is still fab, and she's influencing acts in Eurovision now, can't be bad! Well, now I'm impressed learning stuff to play on the ukelele!! My mate next door is using Lockdown to sing along to for his Daily Ukelele youtube videos (all old songs, though, nothing recent). He plays in a band for fun, the ukelele is a more recent passion. It works really well ("ukelele rick" if you get curious ) Nerina Pallot is indeed a Drake cover, all stripped back and stark, but oddly effective - took me a minute to realise it was Drake's song! If only he was that good nowadays Yes, I'd been sort of happy that we still had Little Richard around, as much because he was always popping up here and there throughout my life as for his music. I liked him, but preferred his 80's stuff, oops! He influenced the greats though, and that's more than enough! thanks! |

Yes, been a terrible fortnight for music losses actually Level Of Concern sounds not unlike Lauv at times, so that can't be bad cheers! |
