Some historic stuff going down in America, this is way bigger than most things.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-52844192 My timeline is filled with images of Minneapolis in chaos, burning police precincts, rioting, looting big stores, and all I can think is good, given the murder that started this (George Floyd) was the latest in a long line of black people getting murdered by American police. meanwhile everyone's least favourite president (aside from busying himself by ranting about Twitter stopping him doing fake news) is really tweeting the line 'when the looting starts, the shooting starts'. very cool to threaten murder on your own citizens like that. |

Those four cops have been sacked but should be in jail charged with murder. That one cop killed Floyd. He was restrained and posed no threat to them. The others let him kill him. The full video's online but wasn't sure whether to post it here, and shows it clear as day. The BBC and others have edited it. Passers-by told them he couldn't breathe and he took no notice. He was bleeding from his nose too and called out for his mum. Absolutely disgusting. Poor man.
Someone leaked their addresses online and protestors gathered outside their homes which are now under 24-hour police guard. Too many sadists in US police.
Honestly I blame the training & the culture. A culture that teaches people to WIN at all costs, plus training that says they can go for lethal force right away...what the hell do they expect will happen? The culture is the same problem behind school shootings too. |

This whole series of events is breaking my heart. How can we still live in a world full of such injustice and racism? People are rightfully not taking this lying down. If Trump wasn't already odious enough... his treatment of these protests, compared to when white people have previously done it, speak volumes

Been watching this type of event for over 55 years. The USA was racist when I was a kid and it's racist now. The only country where you get slagged-off ruthlessly for taking a knee and your career damaged, and institutionalised murderers get away with targeting people of colour.
Contrast and compare with the white extremists who invaded the state legislature armed to the teeth because they couldnt get a haircut and shop....and nothing happened to them. A society where you get killed as a matter of course for jogging/being black/having a BBQ in your garden/having suspected counterfeit money etc etc etc, and the murderers get away with it. The police serve the public, that means ALL the public. You don't get to be judge jury and executioner when you have someone in handcuffs. When I was a kid black people were still getting lynched. Civil rights leaders were being murdered. The KKK was a big thing. White folks who supported Civil rights were also murdered. Not that long ago. |

The fact there’s just as much outrage over the rioting than there was over George’s murder highlights why the phrase “Black Lives Matter” is so important
There’s people literally more outraged over broken windows and stolen cushions from target than they are about a man being murdered by the police. There’s absolutely no wonder why the rioters are acting they way they are - people are angry, have been for soo long and peaceful protests can often end up doing f*** all and they don’t get the same coverage riots do. If these murderers are let off (which it seems like they will after the County Attorney’s comments) I expect this to be one of the biggest set of riots in modern American history, and rightfully so |

Chilling scenes as a CNN team are arrested live on air, with no explanation provided. The black correspondent is arrested first. There’s some crazy sights in all of this. The amount of police outside his home is staggering. Hopefully, justice can be served and charges are brought against all those involved. Most heartbreaking is that this won’t be the last killing of its kind that we see but hopefully it makes the issue more prevalent and proactive action can be taken. |

The president himself having clearly racist views certainly doesn't help matters at the moment, he's been just about the least effective person there is in uniting the country and especially in times of conflict like this. I salute Twitter for finally blocking his dangerous views, if only for a while.
Unfortunately, as many steps as they've taken, racism is still a huge problem in the US, especially in the police force. I'm sure there are so many smaller scale incidents where non-whites are wrongfully charged, harassed or persecuted by cops that happen every day, yet you'll never see them in the news. This was a particularly horrible case and while the violent outcomes aren't ideal, I do hope the publicity it gets can make the world aware, and lead to a rightful murder charge for all the cops involved in George Floyd's murder. |

I can't with people who defend the rule of law at this point. Something I've seen and am paraphrasing is that it isn't the cops stopping people from looting supermarkets, it's people generally just not needing or wanting to do it. When they are... it indicates something has gone horribly wrong. The focus cannot be on the riot's conduct, it's a bloody riot, it doesn't have conduct, the focus needs to be on its causes and making sure it doesn't happen again. While it's going ahead, more power to them, the longer it does, the more likely there'll actually be some lasting change. My main concern is cops actually opening fire on the protesters, as Trump was insinuating, because then it turns into a massacre. This is most likely already more impactful on American society than the election of Bernie Sanders would have been. |

The reason the looting is happening is a coordinated effort to push back against the police department and ensure that they don't just smile and ignore it before the next tragedy happens in a month's time, such is the rate they've been going at. The Right pushing back against this can easily just be painted as a bunch of corporate bootlickers, which they are. I would also argue that there isn't quite a moral equivalence between said act of racial violence and doing some property damage. I don't really want to argue the righteousness behind rioting when the whole point is that it all started with a morally bankrupt act of senseless violence. don't be surprised when the people act in kind. |

To the people so outraged by the riots, what exactly is your answer to end , or at least bring a lot more attention to police brutality? Holding signs on the side of the street? Voting for Joe Biden?
