 Remember the days when you had to wait until a song came out in the shops before you could hear it for the first time? That feeling of owning the latest music from your favourite artist of the time in a tangible format which you could proudly display in your music collection was worth spending what was around £3.99 for the CD which usually contained a bonus track / B side. Maybe you were even young enough to own a tape recorder and copy songs from the radio onto a blank cassette before the days when you would buy singles on cassette or CD. Thinking back to pre-2010 when CD singles were discontinued, and early 2000’s when cassette singles were phased out completely, can you recall what the final single was you went into a shop to buy in either format? Do you still own any singles to this day or have you simply opted for downloads and streaming since then? A trip to the local music store to browse the selection and look for sales was always an enjoyable experience, and you would always find something that you didn’t think you wanted before you discovered it inside. You would go in with £10-£20 saved pocket money and come out with a selection of goodies! Virgin Megastore (later renamed zavvi) will always remain a favourite place to visit back in the day both for CD’s and DVD‘s.   Also, hypothetically if CD singles were brought back, and at a cheaper price than before, how likely would you be to buy them to add to a physical music collection rather than just streaming them instead for convenience? |

The last new CD single I bought was.... Rain On Me
 it's not been dispatched yet though I've got a few relatively new songs on CD! Senorita, Before You Go, Someone You Loved and ME! instantly come to mind.I do miss the days of CD singles, it felt so exciting to go and buy them in shops! It's undoubtedly cheaper and more convenient now but the thrill of the chase is removed. I've been filling in a lot of gaps in my collection recently, with a focus on the Spice Girls + their solo careers. I ordered Melanie C's Carolyna CD earlier on for example! Will be slowly but surely getting them all (plus a selection of other artists - All Saints, Delta Goodrem, Lucie Silvas are a few that I'm aiming to complete!). |

I think my very last CD single purchase in an HMV store must have been Louisa - Forever Young in 2015! Before that, I assume it would have been Little Mix - Word Up!, available in Sainsbury's in 2014.
I still managed to buy a lot of CD singles in the 2010s. According to my Discogs, I own 234 CD singles that came out in that decade.  However, "only" 46 of those are releases from 2015-2019. I definitely bought the vast majority of the 234 via online stores, including artist official stores, German releases (Germany still had a lot of CD singles released last decade). Towards the end of the decade, US labels embraced CD singles again (as well as cassettes and vinyl).I've purchased 2 CD singles in 2020 so far: Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You (reissue) and Lady Gaga - Stupid Love. I've also pre-ordered the following singles: Jonas Brothers - What a Man Gotta Do (CD/Cassette/Vinyl), Katy Perry - Daisies (Vinyl) and Lady Gaga/Ariana Grande - Rain on Me (CD/Cassette/Vinyl), which I'll hopefully be receiving from July through to September. I have 2 cassette singles from the 2010s, both released in 2019: Shawn Mendes - If I Can't Have You and Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You. The last time I bought cassettes in a shop: I specifically remember it was in an indie record store in my home town in 2004, which was closing down. I bought a few random cassette singles then, mostly early 2000s stuff by the likes of Sugababes, Mariah, J.Lo. They were probably only 10p each, ha. Vinyl singles were more common than cassettes in the 2010s, I have 25 of them. I'm pretty certain that all of those were purchased from online stores though. The last time I bought a vinyl single in HMV might have been one of the Lady Gaga picture discs from 2009, but they might have been from online, I can't recall. Before that, it would have been a Melanie C 7" single in 2007! Essentially my enjoyment of buying singles (which stems back to 1998, when I was 10) is still alive and well! Writing this post has made me wonder why I still bother with them. I think it's a case of old habits die hard - for some reason I just like collecting releases from my favourite artists. If physical singles were reintroduced to being on sale in HMV, then I'd definitely buy some releases (again, if they were by my faves). I think it would be far less likely that I would buy a physical of a "random" chart hit though, which is something I did plenty of times in the 90s/00s because that's what you had to do to own songs in HQ (or of course buy compilations like Now). |

The last CD single I bought was Lady Gaga feat. Ariana Grande - 'Rain On Me' from Gaga's online store! However, I only bought this because the vinyl originally didn't have any artwork on it (instead just a purple picture disc), but of course they brought one out with artwork on it a couple of weeks later

I've got hundreds of CD singles (at an estimate I think it's around 800) but they're mostly up in the attic now. I actually can't remember what the last one was, but it was probably 4-5 years ago I imagine. I can't see me buying them again even if they were brought back at a cheaper price because I consume most of my music on spotify now. But I do have a CD player in my car so if CD albums were cheaper I could definitely see myself buying a handful every year.

Outside charity shop purchases I think the last CD single I bought was Jess Glynne - Take Me Home. Before that I bought Faithless 'Not Going Home' in 2010, which was a Tesco exclusive at the time.

My first "purchases" involved buying packs of VHS tapes, calling up The Box to request songs and recording the videos onto tape
I had a mixtape from 1999 featuring Steps, The Cartoons, Fatboy Slim and that Thank ABBA for the Music medley that was around at the time! My uncle made me one too a couple of years later that was full of his then-preferred genres of pop-punk and nu metal  CD wise I bought the occasional charity single so I could say I'd donated (like Gareth Gates - Spirit in the Sky) but only really started buying them in 2007, about the last year where you could go into one of the big music stores in London and find a massive wall with the entire top 40 on CD, and several shelves of back catalogue from earlier months and years (for some reason you could still buy 'Angels' by Robbie Williams' at this point, and I don't think it was a re-issue, they just had that much stock of it). I was also starting to use iTunes around this time but the quality was much lower than CDs so I'd priortise the physical purchases. By the end of 2009 most music shops outside of London had long binned their single section and even the big ones in Oxford Street only had a small corner of them at the back, and when iTunes upgraded their bitrate at the end of that year (plus a Norwegian friend telling me about this cool new thing called Spotify and giving me an invite code to use it) there was no need to keep buying them anymore. Just before New Years Eve 2009 I bought what I think were my two last - Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' and Wiley's 'Take That', both of which I thought were destined to be massive number 1 singles everyone was going to remember forever. I was half right anyway I've posted these photos before but they're pretty interesting, one is from the long-gone Virgin Megastore at Piccadilly Circus (then briefly called 'Zavvi' in its last few months around) in March 2008, and the last time I saw a wall of CD singles as the next time I visited they'd been relegated to a smaller part of the store:  And here's the also long-gone HMV in Oxford Street in February 2012, by then the only place I knew still selling singles, and, erm, half of them are two/three years old (Helping Haiti/Tinchy Stryder etc) and mostly just random charity releases:  Was genuinely amazed when I went to Germany six years ago and found pretty much their entire chart happily on CD single still - they carried on a lot longer there! |

I still have my cd collection in my spare room. I miss the old routine of going to our price to buy my singles for the week. I was always annoyed if the CD was £3.99 in the first week of release.
The last CD single i purchased was Melanie C - Room For Love (through website) In store it may have been Madonna's Celebration. |

I used to go to London quite often back in the day and my highlights were always this store and the big HMV on Oxford Street I would easily buy around 15 to 20 singles during one trip (and even got checked by a very confused security guard at Heathrow one). The good old times.The last singles I bought was probably either Notorious by The Saturdays or Heart Skips A Beat by Olly Murs. |

I like that some artists with big fanbases are starting to release singles again - have recently bought "Blinding Lights". And I had been buying a handful of big hits on CD single from Amazon Germany though that market is drying up too now. Last one I got from them was Ava Max's "Torn".
There's actually a guy on eBay who does very good quality bootlegs - I just bought "Higher Love", "Dance Monkey" and "Sweet But Psycho" from there, but quite expensive so won't be doing that too often. Last new CD single I bought in a shop was probably Stereo Kicks off X Factor - they were selling them in BHS! Last cassette? Probably Rosie Ribbons "Blink" in 2002! |

I still buy CD singles when I can, the last one I bought was Pet Shop Boys - I don’t wanna. Before that it was Freya Ridings - You Mean The World To Me.
My last cassette single I don’t even remember! I often didn’t bother with them but I feel like it was a Hepburn one...

Last CD singles I bought* were 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' by Arctic Monkeys and 'Hung Up' by Madonna, both bought from Woolies, in November 2005.
Last cassette single: I think it was possibly 'Mis-Shapes / Sorted For E's And Wizz' by Pulp in October 1995 Last 7" single: possibly I'm Free' by The Soup Dragons featuring Junior Reid, in 1990 Last 12" single: 'Vogue' by Madonna, again in 1990 * I did attempt to buy 'The Journey Continues' by Mark Brown featuring Sarah Cracknell in February 2008, from HMV's website, but despite my money being taken the CD single was never sent and eventually I got a refund. |

I bought 'Future Nostalgia' by Dua Lipa on CD purely because I wanted to show my support for her. It's sat in the plastic on the side ever since... oops.

I think mine was Alexandra Burke's Start Without You. I liked the notion of collecting for artists I liked tough most had dried up by then.
The main benefit for me were exclusive B-sides and sometime a poster/booklet if included. If more did this and they weren't more than£2-£3, I would pick more up. Hard to justify the cost when you get everything as part of a monthly streaming subscription thee days. |
