Speechless. The death of an 87-year-old woman shouldn’t have the ability of potentially destroying democracy for a generation.

America is screwed.

Would not surprise me for someone to take drastic action against another of the judges to prevent a majority holding.

Utterly insane in America anyway that they vote in judges based on a popular vote rather than qualifications and experience basis.

He'll still be a lame duck president if he loses! And that's what predictions are saying.

impressed that Moscow Mitch didn't even wait until the body was cold ffs though in all actuality he's probably got a timetable to install the new judge by Tuesday

I was going to mention that as the Republicans immediately said they would vote against any Obama nominee. They claimed there was a convention that a vacancy isn’t filled in an election year. Seems they’ve forgotten about that now.

It’s a complete flaw of any system to have political appointees in the judicial system. It ultimately renders the Supreme Court pointless because there’s a pre-determined result. It should be independent.

An envelope containing Ricin has been sent to President Trump but was intercepted by the Secret Service before reaching there. So far no comment from the White House.

Greg Sargent (@ThePlumLineGS) Tweeted:
New Des Moines Register poll finds a dead heat in Iowa:

Biden 47%
Trump 47%

Notably, this comes as a new AJC poll finds a tie in Georgia, and Trump is campaigning in Ohio (which he won by 9 last time) in late September.

So the first debate is a week today, 29th. The Republicans seem to be changing their rhetoric slightly and saying "Well Biden may not do too badly in the debates after all" rolleyes.gif Some democrats urging Biden to withdraw but he won't as that looks like cowardice. Same with Trump.

Word that the Republicans are quickly running out of money whilst Biden had a great fund-raising day on Saturday. Trump may have to reluctantly dip in to his own fortune yet. Still he'd do anything to get re-elected surely? biggrin.gif

One thing that will go against Trump is the fact that he was close friends with Epstein

QAnon cultists (a more pernicious and deeper lost cause than simple MAGA cultists), the people who would base their vote on that stuff (at least those not already against Trump for another reason), have a blind spot with Trump on that front, so I wouldn't put that as an issue ready to drive anyone away from him.

Very interesting to see Ohio trending towards Biden, most polls have Trump just edging that one out, though less so recently. Obviously Ohio has its bellwether streak going for it, it hasn't once voted against the winner in 60 years, but I was considering this to be the year it breaks that as it's more favourable to Trump than the rest of the Rust Belt, if he can't win there, he has no hope in Wisconsin or Michigan.

Assuming Ohio does still go to Trump, and I still have it for him in most of my predictions (in which Biden still wins comfortably), the state I'm most concerned about is Pennsylvania, only five points ahead according to 538 and it is 20 very important electoral votes*.

*all of these predictions are speaking as if a seizure of power isn't forthcoming and it certainly looks like Trump is heading that way, his route being confirming the new Supreme Court justice, Amy Coney Barrett, in double quick time and then challenging the results of the election and claiming victory off the votes counted on November 3rd, no matter that if every vote is counted correctly and it is anything like the polls suggest it'll be an easy win for Biden.

I've been trying to mentally prepare myself for such an event but it's just like... this, with everything else going on, let me not have a brain or cognition or consciousness. give me smooth brain

if there's anything i take comfort in it's that my mom has lived through a dictatorship so I look to her for guidance in that respect
